@Helveck

Just an Average Joe...

Hm, it will be interesting to see how this develops. I was not expecting an MMO, that's for sure... But I trust they're making something delicious.

Well, bungie can't create open worlds, cities, good netcode, dedicated servers, many players online, good storyline or anything like that (any more).
Why the F go for an MMO when it sums up the parts that Bungie are absolutely way behind the other companies?
They plan to take Activision with them in the fall?

Well Bungie, I hope you enjoy your shot at the casual kids, because you failed the core and hardcore gamers that made you what you are way to hard...
We won't forgive, but we will laugh and btw tell IW we said hi :P

Another thought:

I'm not one for buying multiplayer-only games.

I hope there's an offline/single-player experience to go with the MMO side of things. In which case, if the story and universe are compelling and amazing enough, I might be tempted to try the online experience. But still, I have little money as it as and paying subscriptions to play an MMO makes me sad; especially if it's on XBL. I understand business-wise why a lot of MMOs require subscriptions, but that's not really what I'm looking for in my games :/

To be fair, they did design an entire planet map from scratch, they've built the whole city of New Mombasa, and they managed to make the missions in Reach have reusable levels that work well. They don't ever have dedicated servers for Halo because it doesn't require it. It's a host-based system. It works well.

Digging at the storyline is a bit mean considering Microsoft continually put them in tight spots with that; messing up their vision of Halo with the 3 initial novels, then being forced to pop out Halo 2 before they'd even finished telling the whole story.

Halo 3 and Reach were attempts at final clean-ups, to try and inject some dignity into what little they had (but I guess they wanted to mess up aspects of the story to piss off 343i, seeing as there are a lot of things that were non-canon and just wrong; but games>books, remember? :P).

"[Not] many players online", pfft, there have been 560000+ individual players online in Reach in the past 24 hours. That's a weekday, when a lot of people are at work or school. That's pretty decent.

You're being a tad unfair. Though my concern is that clearly something has been entirely different in Bungie's approach to game-development, story and production. I can't place exactly what it is, but something just seems strange in the background. PR is still as good as it ever was though, so I don't think that's the issue.

There comes a time in every mans life... and that time is not now.

I had the same thought. I hope it isn't only MMO. Bungie make such great campaigns imo, so it would be a shame for them to not make another.

I'm not sure how I feel about it being an MMO. I still have faith in Bungie, but they create awesome campaigns as well as multiplayer. I'd prefer it to at least be a FPS MMO or have elements of FPSs like Halo.

I'm trying to envision how this could work. Bear with me here.

Keeping an open world running at all times, providing a "linear-ish" type of single player campaign and giving the Bungie/FPS fans a reason to test these waters will be very difficult to pull off. Here's how I could see it working (or rather, how I'd like to see it work):

> Open world available to everyone playing at the current time. This 'world' is broken up into explorable 'areas' or 'regions' that provide different aspects of the game and the story that is being told.

> Each 'region' is explorable by any player at any time, but once a 'region' is entered, the context or purpose of that particular area is brought to your screen. For instance;

Region "A": Huge explorable area used for general exploration, character/exp building, learning about the storyline through dialogue and findings, etc.. Think Mass Effect's style of real-time world exploration.

Regions "B, C, D, E, F, etc..": These particular areas are where you visit (when available/unlocked) to continue the linear style SP campaign story. As you enter these regions, you will be allowed to play missions you have unlocked that continue the storyline. You would be able to visit/revist these areas whenever they are made available to you based on your progression through the game.

Regions "G-Z": Regions where FPS-style/Multiplayer matches can be held. Real-time battles are occurring here that play-out similar to the typical FPS-style multiplayer matches do in games we play today (Halo, CoD, Killzone, etc..). These particular parts of the world are 'visited' to recreate this style of atmosphere. You'd still have the ability to choose from different 'multiplayer maps' and get matched up with equally skilled players/clans to play normal multiplayer matches with your unique character from the storyline. Offers the same matchmaking search features we see today.

So, basically what I'm getting at is, you'd still have the MMO in a sense that all areas are explorable by all players at the same time. But, based on how you particularly want to experience the game, you can visit different regions of this 'open world' to trigger particular 'modes' of the game to begin.

On a side note, I really hope more and more user created content is launched with this game, not less. Forge is one of my favorite things about Halo and I would love to see this trend of upgrading this feature continue somehow here. Infamous 2 has already announced user-created missions which is something else I would like to see Bungie explore. How this would all fit into an MMO is very tricky but could be expanded upon if they follow a similar model to what I've discussed above.

That's my take on how this type of environment could exist, but more than likely this is a new breed of game we aren't able to grasp at this point. I'm expecting something revolutionary to gaming. (Here we go again!)

:)

If my friends and I can come up with doable ways to make an FPS MMO work, so can Bungie. Really looking forward to this. I mean, this is why I stick around. I knew Bungie had something up their sleeve, I just knew it. God, I'm more excited for this reveal than Skyrim.

This is going to be huge.

Fac Fortia Et Patere

I'm conflicted about this. I'm excited to see what this will provide. What the universe will be like. It's being made by Bungie, with Jason Jones leading the production of it. Maybe we'll see something along the lines (but better) of the huge world pre-xbox Halo was going to be. That's something I've been dying to see.

But on the other hand, I'm scared if this falls through. Bungie hasn't done a MMO yet, and WoW (and not to mention Blizzard's other MMO, the upcoming 'Titan project') is still huge and still makes it hard for other MMOs to be successful.

I guess in the end I'll just be cautiously optimistic about it.

Agreed, I have confidence in Bungie that they can strike gold again. Forge 3.0 will be awesome! Except it'll be called something else, probably.

NEWS FLASH: [i] Bungie's next game is confirmed to be an MMO

Confirmation: Bungie's next game is an MMO
confirmation by IGN, quoting Bungie at their GDC panel
Awesome ! Now what kind of MMO ? they said action but under what could you cassify that ? action or shooter, or something else ?

  • 03.04.2011 8:56 AM PDT

Lol, what if in the single player mode they just replaced all the other players that you would normally see if you were playing multiplayer with bots that spam poorly spelled insults at you? If you randomly party up with them to go on missions, Bungie need only use the same AI Program that was used with Kat to create a realistic playing experience.

The illusion would be flawless!

Just action. A ridiculously broad genre of games. At least we know it isn't a puzzle game.

The source that said that the new game is called "Destiny" is fake. I think that the whole "mmo" idea was an easy guess because of previous speculation. I'm going to bet that the source for that had a lucky guess.

If it's an MMO, then it's probably going to take tons of time and money, along with risk, for both Bungie and Activision to make it completely successful. I can't wait to see how this turns out!

You might want to add a "TL;DR" section for us lazies.

Or maybe you should either read it or don't post in this thread.

OP: good post but the Kotaku (or howerver you spell it) was proven to be false by Bungie themselves. I don't know if that is aplicable for ONLY the members being let go or if it is for the entire project, so just keep that in mind.
Touchy today?

OT: I'm pumped. It's exciting to know something besides Halo is coming out and that it's going to be fresh. I got so excited I bought a tshirt...

FPS MMO?

Could be very promising given bungie's background in FPS, and their excellent multiplayer systems.

You're being a tad unfair. Though my concern is that clearly something has been entirely different in Bungie's approach to game-development, story and production. I can't place exactly what it is, but something just seems strange in the background. PR is still as good as it ever was though, so I don't think that's the issue.

I can't speak about Reach, but after Halo 3 it seemed to me that we were getting the "B team" as far as story --or at least the writing -- goes. Neither Jason Jones nor Joe Staten were involved with the story (iirc), and they had been the core team for Halo. Even back then it felt like the actual Bungie team was off doing something else. It was also mentioned that Marty O'Donnell was the person who suggested killing off Johnson. Nothing against him at all, but when you have a music guy (even as talented, veteran, and awesome as he is) making core storyline decisions, it just seems like there wasn't a driving force behind it.

I don't know whether the grizzled ancients will be taking the lead on this or if they've mostly moved on to administrative work, but I'm really hoping the all-star lineup is at work on this game.

I actually have a hard time believing that Jason Jones could spend 4+ years dreaming up a project and NOT make it awesome. One thing worth remembering is that Bungie almost always innovates when it comes to gameplay. Marathon didn't pioneer the "3D" FPS genre, but it certainly was one of the early ones. And it DID have a storyline that was more involved and immersive than almost any of its contemporaries. Myth took RTS, stripped it to the core fun elements and gave us RTT. Also, you know, another great story. Oni gave us a gameplay style that was, from what I hear, pretty much unique. Halo reinvented FPS games, at least on the console: Two gun limit was unheard of, and now is standard. Regenerating shields were novel, but are now ubiquitous. 16 player console multiplayer went from a pipe dream to practically a requirement. Oh yeah.. we got another great story.

My point is, no matter what you have to say about Halo sequels, Bungie has a long history of producing awesome original games.

  • 03.04.2011 1:22 PM PDT

ISU Cyclones!

My hope is still alive I think... for a space sim shooter (that would go under the "action" category) like the Long Night of Solace mission from Reach or Star Wars Battlefront 2's space battles.

If that was in an MMO capacity with everything from capitol ships to fighters squaring off... ORGASM! But I don't even see how that would be doable. Halo allows 16 people in an FPS setting how will Bungie pull of something like I hope for?

Damn I'm way too excited for a game I know almost nothing about.
