Is there a comprehensive guide/tips to getting better at multiplayer? I play online a bit, and almost always end up in the bottom third... maybe middle score at my best.

I can't quite figure out how those guys who rack up 20-30 kills do it.

I can tell the guys that are playing in the top third are playing a different game than I am.. :)... i barely survive -- they are strategizing...

anyway, i would really like to get my basic MP skills up to the level where I can start playing well enough to really start playing tactically/strategically...

any thoughts on how i can get better?

i have heard playing on legendary with the pistol at sensitivity 10 will help... do people believe this to be true?

Unfortunately, to survive online, you have to become a pistol whore 9 times out of 10. I say "unfortunately," because this virtually eliminates the other cool weapons in the game if you want to play competitively. In any case, I'd start with the pistol, if you haven't already.

Be constantly on the move, even if you're attacking someone else. If you stop moving, you're dead. Period. Simple. Even if you think nobody knows where you are, once you start firing, it will only be a matter of a second or two before someone notices and returns fire.

In pistol/sniper battles, learn to strafe randomly, not just back-and-forth-back-and-forth. Use environment cover when your shields are down.

Learn the best times to reload. Never be caught reloading as you come upon your enemy.

Know the weaknesses and strengths of each weapon/vehicle. Plasma weapons are good for taking down shields, projectile weapons are excellent for finishing off your opponent once his shields are down. If you're hauling a$$ in a hog, beware of the player standing calmly ahead of you with the frag nade and shotgun in hand. If you're having a blast in a tank, turn the body around to avoid headshots from pistols and snipers, etc., etc.

Also, it's incredibly boring and unrewarding as far as entertainment value, but I'd suggest joining a 24/7 sniping server to polish up your aiming skills. Sensitivity is a personal option and playing at a sensitivity of 10 won't make you a pro.

Also, here are a couple miscelaneous "tricks" that have helped me:
-when you're stuck with a plasma nade on your upper body, melee the nearest wall; sometimes this will cause it to stick to the wall or go through the wall
-when you jump from a (reasonable) damaging height, kneel right as you hit the ground to reduce or negate the damage altogether
-firing automatic weapons in short bursts increases accuracy for medium-range targets

Playing against an Elite on Legendary and a good player online are two totally different things. Playing through Legendary is requisite if you want to play well online, just so you have an idea of how to use each weapon effectively, but it's not going to make you a pro either. The Covenant have a much different dodging style and return-fire AI that you just don't see in online multiplayer. The Flood don't even stack up to anything in the multiplayer arena. On top of that, when you play online multiplayer you must factor lag into your attacks, which no amount of playing on Legendary will help you learn.

Anyhow, hope my late-night rambling will help you (and maybe others) in your efforts. You might check out halo.bungie.org (HBO), as they have a tips & tricks section, although much of it is devoted to the campaign.
