The Joyeuse IP Formula
Note to the mods: I figured I'd put the thread here because it's regarding the new IP, instead of the community forum. <3
Readers, please realize that I'm not employed by Bungie. I have no special ties to anyone special that's willing to give me sensitive information about the studio or its projects. I just use my head and resources.
I find it sad that so many have been plagued with the inability to pay attention.
Wednesday night, the Australian branch of Kotaku posted about what an anonymous source sent them about Bungie's new IP and around 30 contractors being fired.
I'm going to start out by proving that the anonymous source is a fake:
It is false.
Need more proof? Halcylon is still employed.
On a side note...
Let's say, hypothetically, that this source was for real. Why on earth would he break his NDA, putting him and the 30 other people at risk of legal action? And if he truly wanted justice, he wouldn't lower himself by revealing sensitive information. Besides, that would just put another nail in the coffin for his/her job.
/side note
So, kiddos, what can we conclude from this?
The information about "Destiny" is fake. Not only can I tell you that it's fake, I can show you where the "source" got the idea for an "FPS MMO" in space.
1. FPS:
- The Halo series was (obviously) composed of FPS games.
- Marathon is credited to have brought in many new innovations into the genre.
*** Bungie's reputation with FPS games would make a new FPS game make sense.
2. MMO:
I shall quote the mighty Joseph Staten here:
"Wouldn't it be great if we could make a world that was always there for you? Wow. That would be great."
Gaming news sites, naturally, took it as a tease for an MMO (trust me, Escapist wasn't the only site who said that).
After Staten's little monologue, Blizzard was asked a hypothetical question about working with Bungie on an MMO. Because Pardo is a pretty nice guy, he said that he'd be willing to share his experience with Bungie.
Of course, people ran with that BEFORE this mess.
3. In space!
This likely came from two rather different things:
- Bungie copyrighted (or trademarked, whatever) the term "Dead Orbit." Why? I don't know for sure, but it's likely for the new IP than just good fun. The term suggests outer space.
- Marathon and Halo primarily take place in outer space. Need I elaborate?
This doesn't mean that the game can't ever be an FPS MMO in space (with unicorns and candy, too!). We don't know what Bungie Aerospace is, or if it's even the next IP.
Bungie didn't comment on the information about the new IP because it wouldn't be a smart move to confirm or deny such a thing. 'Tis PR, my friends.
