The Joyeuse IP Formula

Note to the mods: I figured I'd put the thread here because it's regarding the new IP, instead of the community forum. <3

Readers, please realize that I'm not employed by Bungie. I have no special ties to anyone special that's willing to give me sensitive information about the studio or its projects. I just use my head and resources.

I find it sad that so many have been plagued with the inability to pay attention.

Wednesday night, the Australian branch of Kotaku posted about what an anonymous source sent them about Bungie's new IP and around 30 contractors being fired.

I'm going to start out by proving that the anonymous source is a fake:

It is false.

Need more proof? Halcylon is still employed.

On a side note...
Let's say, hypothetically, that this source was for real. Why on earth would he break his NDA, putting him and the 30 other people at risk of legal action? And if he truly wanted justice, he wouldn't lower himself by revealing sensitive information. Besides, that would just put another nail in the coffin for his/her job.
/side note

So, kiddos, what can we conclude from this?

The information about "Destiny" is fake. Not only can I tell you that it's fake, I can show you where the "source" got the idea for an "FPS MMO" in space.

1. FPS:
- The Halo series was (obviously) composed of FPS games.
- Marathon is credited to have brought in many new innovations into the genre.

*** Bungie's reputation with FPS games would make a new FPS game make sense.

2. MMO:
I shall quote the mighty Joseph Staten here:
"Wouldn't it be great if we could make a world that was always there for you? Wow. That would be great."
Gaming news sites, naturally, took it as a tease for an MMO (trust me, Escapist wasn't the only site who said that).

After Staten's little monologue, Blizzard was asked a hypothetical question about working with Bungie on an MMO. Because Pardo is a pretty nice guy, he said that he'd be willing to share his experience with Bungie.

Of course, people ran with that BEFORE this mess.

3. In space!
This likely came from two rather different things:
- Bungie copyrighted (or trademarked, whatever) the term "Dead Orbit." Why? I don't know for sure, but it's likely for the new IP than just good fun. The term suggests outer space.

- Marathon and Halo primarily take place in outer space. Need I elaborate?

This doesn't mean that the game can't ever be an FPS MMO in space (with unicorns and candy, too!). We don't know what Bungie Aerospace is, or if it's even the next IP.

Bungie didn't comment on the information about the new IP because it wouldn't be a smart move to confirm or deny such a thing. 'Tis PR, my friends.

It's kind of sad that threads like these have to be made. :\

Good work putting it all together and posting it though. Hopefully it will stem some of the baseless rumor-mongering that's been running rampant recently.

I was actually considering sending it in to Kotaku and several gaming sites.

Ad Majora Natus Sum

I hope you're right about those Unicorns, they're so magical!

Have/will Kotaku print a retraction or appology for the false story?

“Strange,” mused the Director, as they turned away, “strange to think that even in Our Ford’s day most games were played without more apparatus than a ball or two and a few sticks and perhaps a bit of netting. imagine the folly of allowing people to play elaborate games which do nothing whatever to increase consumption.”

The Black Chapter!

One thing: just because the guy was BSing about mass layoffs doesn't mean that the IP info was wrong.

Although it is entirely possible that he constructed "Destiny" from the stuff you related to, could it not also be that that is all indicative of an FPSMMO?

While it seems to me improbable that Destiny is correct in its entirety, I wouldn't dig the knife in just yet.

dear god no. Their fop to what they'd term responsible and balanced journalism was to update the article to include Urk's statement.

I guess, but it wouldn't be much of a stretch to say that Bungie's next game will at least have MMO elements in it, even if it's not a MMO in the classic sense. They've been hiring for a Player Investment Designer for a while now...

Not to rabbit-trail but, I think their next game is going to feature the third-person perspective more prominently than Halo. Maybe even getting rid of most of the first-person elements they are known for. Basically, the perspective they choose their next game to be in is still up in the air.

It still sounds like Kotaku made a pretty obvious assumption. If I was to make up an article detailing Bungie's new game, I know calling it a "MMO FPS" would be the most believable to the masses. It just reeks of fake.

(Have I mentioned that I don't believe that there's a source for this story?)

Even if Bungie did fire 30 employees what happened after-wards would not be true, that's just not the way you run a business. Haha, the lengths some people will go to nowadays to drag Bungie's name through the muck.

It seems to me that this was not as much about people dragging Bungie's name through the muck as it was about getting attention, sort of like the guy who made the fake Areospace website.

Ever since Game Informer teased me with it before Halo 3 I've always wanted a Unicorn with the power to shoot flames out it's nose. Bungie.... Do it...

  • 02.18.2011 12:34 PM PDT

My thoughts exactly Cortana 5. Too bad there will still be people believing that this "Destiny" thing will be real until Bungie officially announces their next thing and it is not it.

Eh true, but regardless of the intent it still only adds more fuel to the "hate on Bungie" fire :/

I breathe BR, not kidding homie.

And you are free to think that! My point here is that the "source" is lying. Even if he gets the IP info right, it was just a lucky guess.

Agreed. It's absolutely obvious that the guy who "leaked" the information knows just as much as we do. If this were the lottery I'd say he got everything right except for the names. Even before Urk said anything about the rumors being false I knew it wasn't true simply because Bungie wouldn't codename a project "Tiger". It's simply not like them.

I feel that, when it comes to busting rumors, we need to move away from the "it's not like them" excuse. I'm not saying that saying such a thing means nothing, but to many outside the Bungie community won't take "it's not like them" for an answer.

cortana 5: I want to compliment you on your post. It was a clear, constructive, and very well presented post which is something I don't often see on the web.

So, why is it everyone jumps on the proverbial bandwagon with a source that was proven to be an unreliable source by Bungie? I mean getting somethin like Bungie firing people wrong, then being proven wrong by Bungie, has to kill their reputation right? I guess that branch of Kotaku really wants to be the 1st on Bungie's new IP.
