From reading the books and playing with marines in the games, they all seem to be extremely expendable. Which is sort of ironic, seeing as how they're fighting of extinction from a military power greater than their own four times over, you'd think that they'd want everyone alive.
It's not possible to save every single life in war. The few must die so that everyone else can live on. It's tragic really but when faced with a technologically superior foe like the Covenant, you would do anything for victory (I.E Spartan II/Spartan III program), even if it is against normal ethics and morality.
Tragic, but not ironic because it is a soldiers duty to defend and protect people against harm, even in the face of death. That's just another grim reality of war, that death could be right around the corner.
I'm talking about ONI sicking marines and ODSTs on the Spartans, when most of them die. Seems pointless really.
The Marines and ODSTs were there to help the Spartans complete their (very important) missions. It is unfortunate how many of them die, but hopefully because of their sacrifice fewer will have to die later.
