I'd recommend avoiding the Xbox version of Marathon 2. The Aleph One versions of the Marathon games are free and will play on pretty much any PC (I've even got them to run pretty well on a few crappy laptops).
Link 1 - The most detailed guide I know of, but it's a bit overcomplicated.
Link 2 - Simpler, and you can refer to Link 1 if you really need help.
Link 3 - More download locations. Again, refer to the guide if you really need help.
Getting into Marathon's Story
Most of Marathon's appeal (for me, anyway) lies in its story, told primarily through messages from insane computers. The Marathon 1 Manual gives you a nice intro to the story, as well as a few useful tips (like, try not to get murdered by aliens).
And Hamish Sinclair's Marathon Story Page is a great place to go for any information on, well, Marathon's Story. It's a helpful tool if you ever get confused (and you certainly will by the time you get to Marathon Infinity).
Also, keep in mind that Marathon is an old game. It may be difficult to adjust to it at first, but if you persist you'll be able to enjoy a truly great science fiction story that puts the Halo series to shame.
