Ancient humanity, when we were a galactic superpower alongside the Forerunners.

And the Forerunners left the galaxy; they didn't all die.

Through fire and ash, there are the whispers of the long forgotten.
How long until you listen to them?
How long until it's too late?
But, I fear it's already too late.
For I fear all is lost.
It is our time of reclamation through fire and destruction.

this has been in the halo bible since it was written over 10 years ago by jason jones and bungie. we've been getting bits and pieces that hint at the great mysteries of the halo universe, and now its getting really interesting. when i first played halo 2 i couldnt possibly have believed how deep halo was, all the themes show was a brilliant story it really has.

This is true. A long time ago, before the Forerunner-Flood war, there were two great empires in the galaxy. The Forerunners, and the Human-San Shyuum empire. The Human-San Shyuum empire was as vast and advanced as the Forerunners themselves. The Forerunners and the humans both believed themselves to be the rightful bearers of the mantle.

Several ancient ships crashed into several human worlds containing powder. This powder was used to genetically modify a certain type of animal to make it more desirable. Unfortunately for humanity some people liked to eat these animals. People who ate the genetically modified animals became aggressive, cannibalistic monsters.

These people were the beginnings of what would come to be known as the Flood.

Eventually humanity was able to create a counter-virus that, when put into a person who was consumed by the Flood would counteract the flood virus. By infecting their own people with the virus the Human-San Shyuum alliance was able to defeat the Flood, but at a terrible price, over one third of the population had been killed.

During the war, those who weren't killed fled. In their desperation they ran to wherever they could go that wasn't infected by the flood.

Many fled to Forerunner controlled worlds. The Forerunners, who already disliked the humans and prophets, saw these refugees as invaders. They declared war on the humans and the prophets.

The war lasted many years, but the Humans and the Prophets, who were already weakened from their fight with the Flood, were no match for the Forerunner onslaught.

The prophets, who gave up, were confined to two planets in their home system under a quarantine imposed by the Forerunners.

The Humans, who fought to the bitter end, were not shown such mercy. They were devolved and put back on their home planed, which we now call Earth. They had none of their technology, and were left with no memory of what once was.

Later, after the San Shyuum broke their quarantine, the Forerunners brought a halo ring to their system for a test fire. This wiped out the San Shyuum, except for those specimens stored at the ark, leaving the Forerunners as the only species with knowledge of the events of the Forerunner-Human war.

One hundred thousand years ago the Forerunners realized the futility of their fight with the Flood and fired the Halo rings. Some say the Forerunners were wiped out by these rings, not having enough time to reach their shield worlds. Others say they left the galaxy out of shame for the genocide caused by the array.

Whatever the explanation, when the Forerunners disappeared, they brought the story of the Forerunner-Human war with them.

Two words; 'READ CRYPTUM'

Preferably before you decide to post in the forums about stuff which you know not of.

Oh, I would also change the Title of your thread, as it stands at the moment, it is technicly concidered a spoiler.

“Strange,” mused the Director, as they turned away, “strange to think that even in Our Ford’s day most games were played without more apparatus than a ball or two and a few sticks and perhaps a bit of netting. imagine the folly of allowing people to play elaborate games which do nothing whatever to increase consumption.”

The Black Chapter!

So why did the Forerunners program all their stuff to respond to humans? I mean, if they hate us so much...

that should be in the next book. but Didact felt bad after finding out why the humans started invading forerunner worlds and felt that it wasn't a fair fight since we were down to a third of our population.

So it is safe to assume they gave the role of galaxy protector to us afterwards since we did stop the flood once already as they couldnt.

ancient humans were allied with the prophets, and their power combined rivaled the forerunners, they battled for years and finally lost, the forerunners quarantined the prophets in their home system and pushed humanity to extinction.
