I like to play Devil's Advocate

I may be the first one to say this, But I really dig Brutes in the Halo Universe, Probably even more than I dig Elites.

That isn't to say I don't dig Elites.....but let me put it this way

Elites are Elegant....But Brutes are.....well, Brutes.

and that's what I like about them.

When you hear the word Brute, Something Big and strong is supposed to come to mind, something that uses Brute Force

See what I did there?

Right, so in Halo 2, They were Bullet Sponges, but hey, at the time, they were a neat change of pace from fighting Elites

In Halo 3.....Damn, did they kick ass.

They looked better......Fought better.....and were now sporting a kickass goatee

And we all know Goatees are cool.

Not only that, but they would freaking Lunge from across the map to get to you,the first time that happened to me, I freaking -blam!- my pants

But then.....Halo: Reach releases their first renders of Brutes.

Brute Minors

Brute Chieftain

What the -blam!- happened!?

Where did all the hair go?!? Where did the Sexy goatee go?!

okay....okay....so they shaved, What else could change in their design....

Spoke too soon

Lips?!? And a conehead?!? WHAT!?!

How could we go from this to this?!

And, not only do they no longer resemble Brutes.....But they don't even act like ones

So in Halo 3, you shot on under his armor chipped off, what did he do, He lunged from across the map like a Micheal Jordan

in Halo Reach....you shoot one in the head 4 times until his hat pops off.....No Micheal Jordan Lunge.....No Berserk mode.

They just stand there....and take hits!

and I'm no stranger to how many time paradoxes Halo: Reach has caused....

Please post your opinions on Halo: Reach Brutes below

Have you seen my mind anywhere? I seem to have lost it...

0x0 x0x 0x0 000 000 x0x 000
x0x 0x0 0x0 0xx 000 0x0 000
x0x x0x x00 0xx 0x0 x0x 0x0

I have seen you future

Personally I liked the "sponges" the best because they felt the most brute like. In Halo 3 they had to fill the role of elites and their berserk wasn't as scary as the ape who will chase you forever. That said, I agree with your assessment of the Reach brutes, they were pathetic.

  • 02.20.2011 10:00 PM PDT

The Brutes on Reach were from a different clan, not under Tartarus, who of course allowed Brutes to grow out their hair. These were under the Prophets, which if you notice in Halo 3, also had no hair, because the Prophets ordered all Brutes to be shaved and given Power Armor since Tartarus was no longer around.

I also hate that they removed Berserk from the Brute. I missed seeing them fly to you and can kill you in one hit but you can kill them with a few shots. I wanted them to have hair, I truely did, I wanted to face Bigfoot's, Bungie decided otherwise.

But at least there is a reason why, you're welcome.

Love, A Brute Fan as well =]

I like to play Devil's Advocate

But that doesn't explain why Minors and chieftains shaved their awesome goatees and cool mohawks in Reach

Cause in Halo 3, They at least had those

So? Put it like this.

You're boss is going to fire you unless you get a haircut.

It's like that for the Brutes under the Prophets. They will kill them unless they shave. Hair gets in the way.

No...

You forget, Tartarus was Truth's second in command in his little plot...and he was as hairy as sin.

Also...Halo 3/ODST Brutes has more hair (if only at least a mohawk) than Chieftains in Reach. Why would an ultra-religious organization ease up on its standards?

Also...have you peeked under a Halo 3/ODST Brute's garments lately? I don't think so. You have no idea how hairy they are under that body suit

Yes, I re-read your earlier posts, I misread at first. My apologies.

However, it still raises a good point: Reach Brutes are an insult to Brutes.

I am also a Brute fan, a big Brute fan in fact. I think they are the coolest thing since the other side of the pillow.

But to be honest...I refuse to call Reach Brutes..."Brutes". I think they are some other race. Lets call them WHOOPNARS

Combined with some of the point the thread Author made:

1. Cone heads
2. Human looking lips

I have noticed some other things:

3. Whoopnars have pale eyes, while Brutes have red eyes.
4. Whoopnars are too smooth. Brutes have rough skin
5. Whoopnars have smaller, longer feet with long toes. Brutes have tall, bulky, and short feet with short toes.
6. Whoopnars have too much patience. Brutes are angry people that flipp out.
7. Whoopnars have perfectly straight legs and arms. Brutes have weird legs, with muscular bulges above the knees and forearms
8. Whoopnars have thin, pointy teeth. Brutes have bulky and sharp teth.
9. Whoopnars have small mouths. Brutes have mouths that can open very wide (and even fit MC's helmeted head inside of it)

Perhaps this was a new race that Bungie created? I think this is the case.

That is very persistant although there are points that are overlooked.

- Brute eyes in Reach glow, which is very weird if you notice during the fights.

- If you think about it, the Brutes are their exact brothers in halo 2 aside from the Hair, armor is the basically the same.

- Why are you looking at their feet?

- I never noticed, but that is also for the Elites, why aren't they hunched? Just a small change.

- You look at their teeth? Maybe they filed them.

- I'm not sure on that.

I'm with you brother, I love Brutes. They should be stronger than Elites. They are underestimated. One brute should have the force to kill three Zealots, why must they be shown as the weaker species?

Halo 2 brutes don't have lips

Whoopnars have fabio lips, if you look closely at that one pic I took

Brutes DO have lips in Halo 3, look at you're picture.

Yeah...Brutes have very thin lips, alien in nature (when compared to humans). Whoopnars have human-replicated lips like the Navi from Avatar.

I think that gameplay-wise, the reach brutes are the best. They have more health than the Elites, but no shields. They throw grenades slower than the Elites, and they have unique weans, they also have the "pack mentality(though that was better expressed in halo 3). Halo 2 Brutes were insane especially on the higher difficulties. Most of the Halo 3 brutes were pathetic, and the ODST brutes were also insane.

Old School

im gonna go with trying to make it seem like the elites were still in charge. the brutes pre-halo 2 were used as meat shields.

but when lookin at that picture of hairless cone head brute...bungie you got lazy didnt you?

For a Brute fan you should have known each tribe has their own distinctive coloring (from tan to black) and hairstyles (from fully haired to bald) and amount of armor (due to how "strong" they find themselfs)

Each Halo basically showed us a different tribe.

Also: whats wrong with a cone head? They are meant to look like Gorilla's, ever looked at the shape of a Gorrila head? Its a cone...

As for the change between H3 and Reach Brutes: as if the H3 brutes were hairy...Granted: they were more interesting to fight but still weren't amazing.

The problem with the Brutes is that the games constantly refuse to portray them as they are:
3 meter tall death machines that who won't back down.

The games never portray them as being A LOT taller than you, the player. They should have been as tall as a Hunter (Hunters should have been even taller when standing upright). That makes them more intimidating. Furthermore: they never got their iconic brutal fighting with their hands in the games.
In the books they will drop their weapons, tear off limbs etc etc. The games should have had the same.
In the books: they are often described as rushing through their own troops, tossing aside Grunts, killing them if they're in the way etc. The Chieftains never do so in the games.

Brutes are awesome....in the books. The game Brutes never looked menacing, never felt menacing and never fought brutally...

oh i didnt know brutes were from different tribes and as a result have different aesthetical features.

  • 02.21.2011 3:37 AM PDT

There is a short story in Evolutions that talks about this. Don't remember the name, but its about a couple of humans being captured by Brutes and basically waiting for them to get eaten... and it follows the struggle between a pack of Brutes made up from different tribes"men"

I completely agree with you! Also, if you read First Strike you would be even more confused because the first encounter with Brutes was epic as hell.
