One thing always bugged me with the dialogue in Reach.

As I played through the campaign I noticed that during Nightfall with Jun and The Pillar of Autumn with Emile, they both give you orders.

I can kind of understand how Jun may have been given command of the mission because of his specialized skills. But in TPOA, right after Carter dies (this is the line that gets me) Emile says "Let's go Six" in a very stern manner.

He and Jun both are Warrant Officers. Noble 6 is a Lieutenant. You most certainly outrank both of them.

I just wonder if they think they can do this because they've been a part of Noble for longer. And it works better for gameplay to be given orders, especially when your character is as soft spoken as the Halo protagonists.

I just think it would have been easier to understand if either you were a lower rank or they were higher.

please comment/speculate

If you can read this, that means I'm not a Shaolin monk...

yet.

Bungie just gave all the Spartans in Reach super ranks, even though Spartans should only be high enough to lead a marine squad.

Noble Six could tell the Chief to kiss his feet.

That's wrong.

Noble Team have higher based ranks so they would have more independence in the field. Here's the words straight from the horse's mouth, in this case Urk

"As NOBLE tends to operate much more closely with non-augmented personnel than Blue, Red, et al ever did, NOBLE's CO decided that his team shouldn't have to worry about some Oscar Sierra light-switch they might run into in the field trying to start calling the shots or otherwise alter OP parameters mid-mission."

Source is this weekly update. They don't want their teams like Noble getting bossed around by some upstart green-horn just out of officer training school, like what was happening with Chief in First Strike and the ONI operative whose name escapes me.

Didact's Reprisal -
Now is the time of our unworlding
One final effort is all that remains
And I am not afraid
We shall fulfill our promise
We fight for the grace of the Mantle
And this time none of you will be left behind

There's the possibility that Emile's just bossy.

I think that's a good possibility, especially given the situation.

That's so true. I never understood why Master Chief wasn't promoted. I mean at the beginning of Halo 2 he recieves medals, but no promotion? He pretty much single handedly defeated an entire covenant fleet.

I think that it may be possible that Master Chief turned down any promotions. If you think about his character for a moment, he's not one to feel comfortable behind a desk doing paperwork. Promotions mean more responsibility over more people, and thus desk work. It seems unlikely that Master Chief would willingly take himself away from battle at the front lines.

no matter what rank a spartan is theres no way any of them will be taken out of active duty. they're just to vital to be given desk jobs

I love you stosh.

It's important to note that these Spartans are part of the UNSC Army, not the Navy.

As for a Lieutenant giving a Master Chief Petty Officer orders, I think not. Chiefs have a lot more experience than a boot lieutenant.

Firstly, Spartans ARE part of the Navy. Master Chief Petty Officer is a Navy rank. Noble team and the Spartan III's are Navy as well. Carter is a Commander, while Kat is a Lieutenant Commander. Both of these are Navy ranks. There is no such thing as an Army Commander.

Secondly, while you are correct in that Chiefs have more experience from working their way up the enlisted ladder, it doesn't matter. A leiutenant will always outrank a master chief. Even if the lieutenant is a college student fresh out of OCS, a Master Chief MUST follow their orders. That's the whole point of the chain of command.

In Halo: The First Strike novel, they talk about this. Master Chief doesn't agree with the orders of Lieutenant Haverson, but he obeys them anyway, because he follows the chain of command, as every soldier should.

Actually, warrant officers have their own ranks that do not directly correlate to other ranks, so it would be hard to say if it outranks lieutenant or not.

Negative, sir. A Warrant Officer (grade W-1 to W-5) is ranked as an officer above the senior-most enlisted ranks, as well as officer cadets and candidates, but below the officer grade of O-1 (Leiutenant)

To recap: Noble Six outranks Jun, Emile, and Jorge.

I have brought up this same problem before, but while talking to my friends as I'm doing campaign.

Jorge also gives Six some lip from time-to-time.
I'm a friggin' Lieutenant. I expect "Yes, Sir"s, "No, Sir"s, and the like.
Not, "SIX, DO THIS! DO THAT!"

Another problem I have with the dialogue is that god-awful marine who voices Cpl. Travis (3Charlie) and a few other radio-chatter people.

"The Covenant is on Reach, I repeat, the Covenant is on Reach..."
OH DEAR GOD, THE MONOTONE.

Also, Noble are SpecWar (it's separate from the Army and Navy), and Six can give orders to Master Chief. The Chief just holds a more respectful rank, although it's lower than Lieutenant.

Also, on the general confusion about the rank of Master Chief Petty Officer:
Master Chief is promoted at the end of Halo 3: to MCPO of the Navy, which is the highest enlisted rank.
This would put him still below an officer, but above all enlisted personnel (in his branch, anyway (Navy). The Army equivalent is Chief Sergeant Major of the Army, or two ranks above Johnson).
For the Master Chief to become an officer, he'd have to willingly go and undertake Officer Training, regardless of his rank.
I'm sure it was a choice thing to follow the Enlisted path rather than the Officer path.

Normally, yes, but in Ghosts of Onyx, Kurt never had to go through OCS. They just promoted him to Lieutenant all willy-nilly. Still, I agree with you, going the enlisted route better suits his character. I can't really picture the chief giving out mass orders. He's more the small squad leader type.

And OMG YES about CPL Travis. Have a little bit of urgency.

"Oh, hey, if there's anyone around, our planet is probably about to be annhialated. No big deal or anything. Just thought you all should know."

I love that he add's "It's the Covenant" at the end.

Yeah... No -blam!- sherlock. lol.
