Subject: Started reading the books!

"Question. Which Spartan is best?"
"That's a ridiculous question."
"False. Master Chief."
"Well, that's debatable. There are basically two schools of thought."
"Spartans shoot Sangheili. Spartans. Sangheili.....Battle Star Galactica."

I started reading the books a few months back, beginning with The Fall of Reach. All I have to say is WOW! They are really great! I've worked my way through them in order - just finished Contact Harvest. Starting The Cole Protocol soon!

Without any spoilers, what are your favorite books in the series? So far, I've loved TFoR, FS, and GoO the most, but I've enjoyed them all.

Is The Cole Protocol good? Cryptum?

I love them all.

Cryptum is amazing,i haven't read cole yet :(

I have Evolutions, it's an awesome anthology. The Return and Human Weakness are my favourite stories.

Where do you get those? I've been using Amazon Kindle on my iPad. I wonder if I could get them on that...hmmm...

Honestly you have to read Cryptum. Everything you thought you knew is about to be shaken.

I have heard that it is preferable to skip Cole Protocol and read it last. It was made last in the series after all. Eric Nylund is not the author and is 'easier' to read once the others have been read.
Fall of Reach, The Flood, First Strike, Ghosts of Onyx, Contact Harvest, Cole Protocol seems a good order. I think the Forerunner trilogy should be read after an understanding of the backstory of Halo.
But have fun reading.

Signatures are for squares.

In my opinion, best books to worst books:

Cryptum > Evolutions > Ghosts of Oynx > First Strike > Fall of Reach > Contact Harvest > The Flood > Cole Protocol

  • 02.23.2011 9:21 AM PDT

All of them are great, but my favorite is probably Fall of Reach.

Luckily I've read all of the books prior to Cole in order! Really enjoyed them.

I bought Halo: Legends -- haven't watched it yet. I wanted to read all of the books first. Opinions on that? I've heard mixed reviews. Seems people either love it or hate it, and for some it's both.

boom, head shoot

I haven't read any of the books, but I've listened through contact harvest and fall of reach.
My favorite so far is contact harvest, mostly because it was voiced by Holter Graham and Jen Taylor.
Im now listening to ghosts of onyx.

Are there any audiobooks of cryptum?

I am a practicing traditional Catholic.

In order of release and what I thought of them;

Halo: The Fall of Reach = Very good. Not my favourite as it portrays John a bit too much like a mindless, order following robot for my taste. Recently binned. My own issues.

Halo: The Flood = My personal favourite out of all of them. I loved the epic feel and the way it really added to the CE story.

Halo: First Strike = Okay. Probably better then I remember it, I only read it once. One of the poorer of the books IMO. Also recently binned.

Halo: Ghosts of Onyx = Epic. Better than I remembered. Very good read.

Halo: Contact Harvest = Poor. A big disappointment. Binned.

Halo: The Cole Protocol = My 2nd favourite. Really good story, especially with the Sangheili based sections.

Halo: Evolutions = A travesty. The worst Halo book ever. Binned before I even read it all. The Return on waypoint was good though, so I imagine to story was too.

Halo: Cryptum = Have bought it but I haven't read it yet. Looks awesome.

In time, the tru7h will be revealed.

Onyx > Fall of Reach > Cole > First Strike > Flood

I Started Harvest but never finished it. What I did read was pretty good though.

I plan on reading Cryptum soon but haven't gotten around to it yet. Looks really good.

If I were you I would return Legends if you have any love for the Halo story. It tramples canon and made Halo look ridiculous.

OP, read Cryptum, it's a great book. Also read Evolutions. These short stories are, for the most part, excellent. They give you insight into smaller parts of the universe that you don't normally get to see.

Cryptum is like fresh orange juice, a reese peanut butter bar, and super saiyan 3 all mixed together. If that makes any sense.

Its a fresh, epic tale of tasty proportions.

I love all of them. But I'd have to say Fall of Reach, First Strike, and Ghosts of Onyx in no particular order.

  • 02.23.2011 7:42 PM PDT

I have been reading them aswel. Currently half way through GoO and its amazing.

I have a couple of questions for those who have read them all though...

1) Is there any mention of the arbitor in the books,

2) Is there any mention of Noble team in the books..

BTW I'm new to the "Bungie Universe" part of the forum, It's a welcome change from the whiners on the Reach forum :)

Hey good for you man, the books are great. As for a favorite, I don't possibly think I could choose. Some of them are just too good.

Answer to question one yes the arbiter is mentioned in the books. If I remember correctly at the end of First Strike he is mentioned as the traitor who lost the forerunner relic. Also he is the elite in The Cole Protocol before he became the arbiter.

Now the answer to question two which is a lot shorter no noble team is not in the books.

The Fall of Reach, The Cole Protocol and Halo Evolutions would be my favourites. Unfortunately non of my book shops have Halo Cryptum yet, I will just have to wait.

Do not listen to this guy, it does not trample on canon at all, it has a few minor inconsistancies due to artistic interpretation, so I wouldn't regard every single detail as one hundred percent canon, especially not how people look. Ff you are apprehensive about Halo Legends, I'd suggest watching them on Netflix (if you have it) first. But as for me, I loved them all, except for Origins Part II, that was the only one that I felt really sucked

The Fall of Reach was awesome. Hopefully, an expansion based on that book will come out.
