I know intelligence doesn't make a difference. But with examples of cross-bred species today, how can we say that species of the same or higher evolutionary level can not cross breed?
Well, first because the humans then are supposed to be modern humans, who were then devolved right? So they were of the same evolutionary level we are as of now.
Second, the Forerunner are aliens. Plain and simple. It takes a massive amount of specificity to cross-breed things even in the same genus, from our planet. The chances of something from another planet being able to reproduce with a human, let alone have fertile offspring are infinitesimal. It's even more unlikely than a baboon and a crocodile, or a bat and a snail. Because who knows anything about the anatomy or body-chemistry of the Forerunner? They could be Chlorine based life-forms for all we know. But the odds of them being genetically compatible for reproduction are almost 0.
I concur, I've been going on the theory that hybrids are possible because of what we've see in the Star Trek Universe. But now that I think about it, in the Prime ST universe, it was revealed that most Intelligent Biped Species were made from the same DNA, that's why they could cross-breed.
So Cross-Breeding would only be possible if it was revealed that Precursors created both humans and forerunners in the same manner as the "Precursors" in Star Trek.
