I put this idea in a thread ages ago and I was looking for some more feedback.
Here is the basic story:
The year is 2558. A squad of four spartans finds a comm signal sent by Cortana giving the exact coordinates of hers' and Master Chief's half of the Forward Unto Dawn. After reaching those coordinates, they find out that the planet the remains of the ship is on a planet. The inhabitants? None other than the Covenant's gods, the believed-to-be-dead Forunners, and they're not so happy that Humanity has found their home world. The spartans fight through them and awaken John, who has been in cryo-sleep for about 5 years.
Here are the missions of the game, which also show the ending to the story:
1. Deep Space: Your fleet has been intercepted by an unknown squadron of fighters. No time to find out what they're doing here. Take them down and move on to the Dawn's coordinates.
2. The Blackout: Much like ODST's opening, your landing squad's comms were EMP'd and your controls are down, but this time, it doesn't take the entire campaign to find them. After your ship crash-lands, regroup with the other Spartans.
3. The Horrible Truth: After discovering that the planet's inhabitants are indeed the Forunners, and that they're hostile, take down their local militia and get to the rendezvous point. The UNSC has sent in reinforcements to you.
4. The Sands of Death: After a long battle in a desert in the search for Cortana's signal, You and your squad are trapped in a temple of some sort. There are no Forunners, just strange, supernatural spirits. Get past them and get the hell outta there.
5. Orbital Defense: The remains of the Covenant, lead by a new Brute alpha-male, have intercepted Cortana's signal as well and are trying to get through the UNSC's orbital defenses in order to get on the ground and assist the Forunners, which are being pushed back toward their capital city. They've already done enough damage to get into the atmosphere. Your job is to retake the orbital defense launch facility, get in orbit, and buy enough time for everyone to retreat.
6. Get the Hell Off my (stolen) Lawn!: Covenant artillery is attacking a vital UNSC intelligence outpost. Get back to the planet's surface and defend the outpost so the UNSC frigates can macblast the Covenant artillery force.
7. The Capital Assault: The UNSC now has the capital city of The Forunners under siege. Now you must get the exact coordinates of Sierra 117's cryo-sleep pod, then get there while the siege distracts the Forunner defense.
8. Sierra 117: Stealth is no longer an option. Your squad has been detected, and are being intercepted. Get to the cryo-sleep pod and reawaken Master Chief before it's too late.
9. The Ring: With John finally awakened and Cortana found, the New Covenant is now down to their last option: fire a secret Halo Ring, a fail safe of sorts, that is positioned near the planet's core. The Brute alpha-male goes to a secret laboratory where the firing array is, hoping to finally rid the Covenant of the Demon and finally bring their Great Journey to an end. Follow him and stop the firing, no matter the cost.
10. End Game: The five Spartans have killed the alpha male and stopped the Halo ring from firing. However, an abrupt stop to the firing has destabilized the planet's core, and it will implode in 48 hours. Push through the Forunner's last stand attack and get out of the capital city.
11. Rampancy: With Cortana going rampant due to her life cycle as an AI ending, she is losing nearly all of her sense of good judgement. It turns out that the Spartans made a horrible mistake hardwiring a rampant AI into the Forunner Automated Defense System. She's now officially lost it, and now she's trying to kill you. Get outta there and terminate Cortana (Chief will likely cry). But remember, finish the job fast, the planet is going to implode soon.
12. The Reclaimer: You have 1 hour left. Get into space and get though the Covenant orbital attack before you're out of time.
Afterwards: The remainder of those who were relocated to fight the Forunners return to Earth and a ceremony is held for those who died in the fighting. The short, yet bloody, Forunner War is over.
I added a mission to the story and revised a little bit of the information.
