Ping is how long it takes for information to be sent from your computer to the host computer and back to your computer. Likened to the SONAR technology, hence the name "ping." Basically, a measure of lag.

High pings are generally bad, low pings are good. A ping of 0 can be accomplished only by hosting a game.

If your ping averages 300 your either playing on servers on the other side of the world or you have dial-up access. Either way you are going to have and cause lag on that server.

ping is simply the number of milliseconds (1000ms in one second) it takes for your computer to send a "ping" to the server, and then recive the server's responce.
as Me15ter said, a low ping is generaly better.

depends on where the host is in comparison to you. staying at 100 ping or less is good.

Geez. Spelling and grammar, please! This is a forum, not your IM account! And quit flaming, don't say "no offense," that was a low, thinly-veiled insult.

Ping varies, there isn't a set number for a certain connection. There are other factors that go into lag, mainly the distance from you and the host, the bandwidth of other players, and the bandwidth of the host. So there isn't a set number per connection.

Generally, if you have bad ping, move on to another game. If it persists, try to shut down other apps, tinker with settings, etc, or buy higher bandwidth (better connection).

Well, putting it simply, ping is lag, and the higher the ping the slower the game will be and the faster the host will be to boot yah.

Not necessarily. I get many good servers around 40-70 ping, but they don't have all that great lag. On the other hand, the EU-Bungie servers, which I don't believe are near me in America have a ping of 180. They are fast as all get-out. Therefore, ping is not the final word in the matter of how good the lag in a game is.

I generally get around 160, and from my xbox apparently I have a 24% packet loss.....which doesn't sound good. (It says P:19/25)

Ok, this is a real newbie question.....when I'm in the lobby looking for games, how do I specify I want to play an EUgame (I assume that would mean it wouldnt fail to connect so many times).

In general, lower ping is better, but I've also found that if everyone has a similar ping, (as opposed to widely varied pings), the game plays ok, even for pings up around 500 or more. But when some players have 33 ping and others have 200 ping play usually stinks, even when I'm the one with 33.

Also, on some servers, the pings go up and down during the game. This can be hard to adjust to. I'd rather have high staedy pings all around than have them jumping all around.
