Can anyone answer this? I mean I know that is the name the UNCS give them, not their Covenent names. But still is there any refrence as to why?

Well, the Marines call Wraiths Wraiths because "When you see one, you get turned into one."

Anyways, it does impose order in what would be a chaotic naming system. All Covenant Vehicles that uses Anti-Gravity are named after supernatural entities, while all walkers are named after insects that have some correlation with Egypt's history.

It's more than just space vehicles. It appears that any manned jet is named after a sword type.

One could post the same question about current tanks. Why are they all named after generals (Shermans, Abrams...)

It just happened to be a cool way of naming vehicles.
