Foman is awesome!

Note: I haven't read Cryptum yet but I don't care about spoilers so just fill me in here.

SPOILERS:

So I heard that in Cryptum it is revealed that Humanity are devolved Forerunners(why and how?) but doesn't this go against the Terminals from Halo 3 which clearly state that the Forerunners(specifically the Librarian) discovered Humanity as their own thing and only at the last minute? What?

Humans are devolved humans. The undevolved humans waged war against the Forerunners, and devolving was their punishment.

Still contradicts the common interpretation of the terminals though, but the other books probably tell more.

Sangheili Major: "Brute ships. Staggered line! Shipmaster, they outnumber us, three-to-one!"

Rtas 'Vadum: "Then it is an even fight. All Cruisers, fire at will! Burn their mongrel hides!"

Humanity was devolved by the Forerunners. Here's how it goes, if I remember correctly...[And I'm not gonna right everything...because I'm lazy.]

The human-San 'Shyuum alliance fought a war with the Flood and were pushed into Forerunner space.[Though, they won the war with the Flood by creating a counter virus.]
The Forerunners declared war.
The San 'Shyuum surrendered and were limited to two planets in their system. The humans on the other hand didn't surrender and so were devolved by the Forerunners.

...that breaks anything I've ever known about anything. Is...is this really canon now?

Only partly correct.

The humans created an interplanetary empire around 160k BC. Shortly before the Human-Forerunner war, they allied with the Prophets and combined their territory. Then the Flood arrived.

They fought it conventionally, but finally the humans figured out how to beat it. They infected a full third of their galactic population/territory with the pathogen, and pulled back. Let their people become absorbed. The Flood literally choked to death on Humanity. Then they re-engaged the survivors, and beat them out of the galaxy.

During this war, they pushed into Forerunner and other neutral races territory and took world after world, for resources. The Forerunner attacked at this sign of aggression. They bribed the Prophets to surrender.

Deprived of a full third of their territory, coming off the heels of a major war, and with their allies abruptly pulling their resources, Humanity still fought the Forerunner for a few decades before eventually being overrun. This occured in 110k BC. They were devolved to savages, and banished back to their homeworld Earth. They then re-evolved to what the UNSC was.

As for the Prophets, the young warriors of their culture were, and are, still "hot." Back then, the warriors ruled. Today, the elders do and no Prophet ever engages in combat.
