A: Longsword is a bomber. Two of them destroyed the hanger bay doors to an assault carrier.
Incorrect. That role for space combat would be a Fighter, which is a small craft that attacks capital ships. In space, the term "Bomber" doesn't apply.

As for the Bombing scene in Reach, wouldn't Shortswords be the better option?

One of it's three roles is bombing.

About the bombing run, I'm pretty sure all three deployed bombs on each Scarab.

Concerning the Oliphant, I'm sure it is more armored then your typical civilian vehicle. Maybe not military-grade like a tank, but moreso then your average truck.

Pelican, while not going 'full speed', it wasn't crawling. I used full-speed in reference to how fast we've seen them traveling ingame/cutscenes.

Bombing may be one of the primary uses, but the term "Bomber" doesn't apply to it in space.

There are two types of "star crafts":

Interceptors: star crafts that specializes in combating other starcrafts.

Fighters: star crafts that specializes in capital ships (Corvettes, frigates, destroyers, etc.) and space stations.

Sorry 'bout that. My OCD demands this clarification.

I hate it sometimes =(

Anyways, as I said before, wouldn't it have been better to use aircraft that is specifically designed for bombing runs instead of a mutipurposed crafts that cannot carry large amounts of said explosives?

*Shrug* I'm going off the star wars method. You have interceptors, which are your anti small craft ones (A-wing). You have the fighter-bombers/fighters, your mainline heavy/mainline fightercraft (X-wings). And then you have bombers, aiming against enemy large ships. (Y-wings.)

Bombers carrying the most explosives, second by fighter-bombers. Fighters and interceptors having the least.

As for the bombing run, I guess it would depend on what was close-by. The longswords may have been brought in alongside the frigates and thus were used as they were closer to the battle.
