...Starting with reach, Im on the second last mission, and I realized, I forgot halo wars.

Should I bother? is it considered cannon? it's not like much is even learned throughout it, maybe i'll use it between reach and h1 or h1 and 2.

Worth it or not?

Restart.

There is no room for errors in this neighbourhood, sister. I also planned on doing a Halo story run-through sometime soon.

I would say so. It is a halo game after all. Much of the story is canon. Besides, I thought it was a pretty good console RTS.

Halo Wars is canon. It is also worth playing through, since it gives some of the backstory related to Harvest.

If you want to skip it you could have a play through of the Bungie games, but I would strongly recommend playing Halo Wars.

I started my play through and realized I forgot ODST, RESTART FOR JUSTICE!

  • 03.01.2011 8:43 PM PDT

You're going to have to do some switching about during Halo 2 and ODST.

It's still canon, but compared to Reach, CE, 2, ODST, and 3 its story isn't connected with the other games ultimately.

Of course with Reach it really wasn't connected to the progression of the Halo plot until the final two missions, but at least it's something. Same goes for ODST still having a small bit of relevance to the Ark plot as extremely minor as it may be.

Course if you're going through a canon run as in an actual timeline of events in general for the Human-Covenant war then yes Halo Wars should be included in the run as the first game to play.

Well it sure is canon. It's just a very early prequel. It has different characters so you CAN skip it.

The story will still make sense if you don't play it, but I personally loved it. I've never really enjoyed RTS games, but this was pretty good, and as much as people hate to say it, it's canon.

Overall, gameplay's quite good, story's not too bad either. It will likely take a while if, like me, you're no good at RTS games. In my opinion, its Legendary is harder than any of the other Halo's. It's the only Halo I haven't beat on Legendary, and I have no plans of attempting it any time soon! XD

The gamertag linked to this account is an old one. My new one is James Voe Guy.

I'd restart. I quite like the idea of playing through all the games in the right order... I may just do it.

Walk softly, and carry a big midget.

I don't understand why people say it isn't canon.

  • 03.02.2011 3:31 AM PDT

Vengeance only leads to an ongoing cycle of hatred.

I'd restart. Halo Wars is a Halo game whether people like it or not. I love Halo Wars and it is, indeed, canon. People just don't want it to be because they don't like it.

I am a practicing traditional Catholic.

Yes it is worth it. I isn't necessary but it is awesome. Might not give you immensely improved insight into the story arch or anything but it is still a great game.

Depends on whether you want to play Halo games chronologically or the story of Cortana (which I count to be Reach>1>2>ODST>3).

Also, doing this chronologically, I'd stop playing after New Mombasa in Halo 2 and boot up ODST, then return to Delta Halo after you complete that. Just for extra awesome (since it does take a couple months for them to complete that slipsteam run).

Because of

A: Bungie didn't make it, therefore it isn't canon.
B: It is not a FPS, therefore it isn't canon.
C: They don't like RTS games, therefore it isn't canon.
D: Gameplay elements only, therefore it isn't canon.
E: They didn't like the campaign/game, therefore it isn't canon.

(It is canon, but those are the reasons I've seen posted sometimes.)

The only non-canon pieces of it are certain gameplay features, like the Spartans having shields when they are in Mark IV armor.

I am doing the same at the moment too, currently almost done with ODST and can almost continue at the first Arby level.
Skipped Wars this time because I chose to go for the shooter only approach and because of the 20 year gap.

Wars IS considered canon tho, and has a good story so if you really want to, you could include it in your playthrough.

My playthrough opened my eyes about Halo CE by the way...too bad :( It doesn't hold up as well anymore against its succesors in terms of how it plays (core is great, but things like controls are really lame these days). Still think H2 is the best in the series. ODST and Reach also are better than I thought before...

EDIT:
@Cmdr DaeFaron:
You forgot:
* It doesn't fit their own edition of canon.

Sadly most "fans" take whatever they like from the canon to form their own fanon and like to pretend their vision is the only true vision, ignoring the fact that the things they don't like are official canon too....

Don't worry, you're still your mom's favorite Bnet member.

Are you going to stop midway through Halo 2 and play ODST?

Not to forget multiplayer, but multiplayer is never considered cannon.

play halo wars, the story is much earlier but it's good and introduces you to new vehicles and gives you some backstory on both the unsc and covanent,

PS a chronological playthough would be even better with you reading the books in order too =)

When I was reading your list I was about to slap you then I read the parentheses and thought to myself, "phew that just saved me a long rant."

OP, Halo Wars is a good game, but not as good as the Halos that were produced by Bungie. If you don't own it the price is probably very much reduced so it would be worth it.

  • 03.02.2011 9:11 AM PDT

Ah the joys of trying to do that with the marathon series.

I tried covering that with the "They didn't like it." but yes, it is said when people start arguing about canon and go "That isn't canon." 'Why not?' "I say so!"

I put that in just to save the headache of having to point it out later.

As for price of Halo Wars? Friend got it for $30 recently.
