Their hair isn't long enough.

  • 03.02.2011 4:38 PM PDT

If they had them as a kid when they where taken, they would have been cut off. Once part of the military they'd never grow them, or be allowed to.

I believe I remember a Spartan with medium length hair mentioned in the books.

Anyway, they might be allowed to keep them, but who knows what wearing the helm all that time would do to it.

Only the consideration of other gives your words meaning

It's against military regulations, such as the ones set in place today.

Special Forces don't have those regulations (they need to better blend in, and other stuff I couldn' hope to comment on).

I'm pretty sure that Spartans fall under that umbrella.

idk, if you had long hair as a spartan, and you were issued with air tight mjolnir armour, there'd be trouble wearing your helmet without getting your hear stuck, which imo wouldn't be a very convenient thing.

-blam!- Was that actually blammed out? Or did I just type it? You'll never know.

No, but seeing a Rasta'd Spartan would be amazing.

Special forces soldiers still have to keep their hair regulation length, but some grow it out as far as the regs will allow. The only time they will have longer hair is if they are deployed for a long period of time far from a base.

Some will also grow beards out to conceal identities or to blend in with locals.

That said, no dreadlocks.

Exhibit A, Solomon. Closest thing we've seen to spartans with dreadlocks.

so incredibly un canon, his hair is like that solely for the purpose of the anime feel

spartans maximum hair length was like 2cm, any longer and the helmet wouldn't form to their head correctly, Kats hair in halo reach is the longest hair you will see on any spartan.

It is oh so very canon. And if you have a copy of the up to date 2552 UNSC Uniform code, I'd love to see it. No where does it say they can't have dreadlocks. No where does it say Solomon is not canon. He is very real in the haloverse. Deal with it.

I am guessing there are like...military regulations in place.

Men must have buzzed hair or be bald or something

Women are allowed medium-short length hair, but it must be properly maintained. I doubt the military would force women to have a men's haircut...I would like to think the military is not stuck in the 1800;'s domain of thought where everything must be male dominated when it comes to stuff like that.

But yes, generally...short hair only..

The animated shorts all took artistic liberties, Cal-141's (the babysitter)hair would have gone halfway down her back.

I can't remember if there's a description of Adriana-111 from Grey Team or not. She was working counter-insurgency, and had to blend. I'd imagine she'd be one of a few who could have worn her hair long. Even Dare wore her hair short.

obviously there are exceptions, but no spartan would have their hair styled and more than a few cm if they could help it,
could you imagine running around for WEEKS on end with long unwashed sweaty hair inside an airtight skintight helmet?
it couldn't be comfortable

I had originally thought about the football players that have huge hair under their helmets; but like you said it would get very gross and would interfere with the neural link.

I believe tier-one Special Forces can grow their hair out as much as they want; almost to a point of ridiculousness.
The point is, as previously stated, to blend in: and in rugged places like Afghanistan, a clean-shaved face and neat hair would get you spotted out.

I didn't think you could have long hair in the military, couldn't you?

  • 03.03.2011 3:26 AM PDT

Vengeance only leads to an ongoing cycle of hatred.

Doubt their hair would be long enough.

  • 03.03.2011 3:45 AM PDT

COnsidering how long a spartan spends in his helmet, it seems extremely unlikely they'd have much hair under there.

  • 03.03.2011 3:50 AM PDT

Female Army soldiers in reach have sholder-length hair, so I imagine a Spartan could too.

And tbh, who is going to stop them? ;P

In one of the books (In describing Fred, I believe) it confirms that Spartans must have short regulation hair. The only exception should be those undercover, which other than in Cole Protocol, should not really happen at all. Ever.

Which Spartans would dare disobey? They're not generally rebellious.

I don't remember it ever talking about them being forced to keep their hair short...

Source or it didn't happen.

Edit: Even if you find said source, it wouldn't matter. Halo Legends overrules book canon.
