Subject: Bungie's next game confirmed to be an MMO

I'm really wondering how they'll go about this. On one hand, Bungie has made FPS games, and only FPS games. So that's their main strength, on the other hand, they may feel the need to get a little variation. They also said it's not going to be a WoW in space. Which I'm very happy about, as that's not the kind of game I want from someone like Bungie. Some of the biggest problems in regards to MMO games IMO is that your success is in large part proportional with the time invested, rather than personal skill. I would like to see Bungie make a change to this. And I think there is hope, particularily when I look at Halo compared to other major FPS games right now. Halo is the only game where everyone have the same options, you can't unlock new weapons or buy new abilities, the unlockable features in Halo: Reach only have aestethical features, and no gameplay benefits.

I stopped reading right there. Just no. Go look into some history. The FPS genre is not the only one they've made games for. Look at Myth and Oni.

sig goes where?

Bungie existed before Halo FYI

  • 03.04.2011 7:00 AM PDT

I'm pretty sure Myth wasn't a FPS.

I guess Oni is debateable.

It wasn't. Oni was a Third-Person Shooter/Beat 'Em Up. There's no debate in that.

You are shooting at people with guns (alright 90% punching guys, but you can do that in shooters).

It's very much in the same vogue.

Note: NOT an MMO, they called it a massively multiplaye ACTION game. I'm expecting it to be a little like a little like falout3/new vegas, but in space, and (probably) has a large vehicular influence. I saw that Bungie has filed copyrights for 4 different URLs (possible names). they are Osiris, New Monarchy, Seven Seraphs, and Dead Orbit. I am particuarly concerned about these titles, as they give a MUCH darker impression of a game than the previous working title, Bungie Aerospace. The last one i especially dislike. It feels like a rip off of Dead Space and Dark Orbit. I liked Bungie Aerospace and i hope they stick with that.

Interesting.

Knowing Bungie, they're going to want to keep their core fan-base so it will be somewhat similar to their previous games. I just hope Activision doesn't want to change them too much.

1. "MMA" is still "MMO", though it's very likely this is going to be a FPSMMO.

2. Those 4 names, I believe, to be governments or "armies" in the new IP (or something to that effect), or alternatively chapters of the game. Maybe even planets/moons essential to the story. But I don't believe those are the potential names of the game. "Destiny" is most-likely the name. Look how many letters it has (7).

3. Bungie Aerospace sounds more like it will be some sort of hub-network social network the more I think about it now. The fact it has "Bungie" in the name says to me that this isn't the game's title. What company puts their company name in the title of a game?

It's a metaphor for the 07s' lack of identity. too old to be newfag, yet too new to be oldfag, we wander b.net in search of a home, forever trying to be something we are not.

The thing that has always deterred me from ever buying and playing MMO games is the monthly subscription fee. Sure I pay for Xbox Live (begrudgingly) but that gives me access to multiplayer for a multitude of games not just one.

As it has deterred me from ever playing other MMO's monthly subscription fees give me pause when thinking about Bungie's next game. While I enjoy Bungie's games I'm not sure I'm willing to dole out the extra money to play it.

However this doesn't seem to be coming out for PC so it is possible that it will be based within the already existing network of Xbox live or the Playstation network. So we;ll just have to wait and see.

It is likely to be pay-to-play.
Look at all the other console MMOs. They've all required a subscription fee.
It's an unfortunately side effect of maintaining the servers required to run an MMO.

If Bungie were smart, however, they'd run the same route as they do with the Halo series. Make it free to play, but release paid content every few months that make it almost necessary to pay up to get all the features. So it's like a subscription fee but its masked by new content.

That would work, but they'd also need to make it a bit fair for members who can't/won't pay.

paying for updates is all apart of a mmo, if people were not constantly updating it, the game would be unbalanced and eventually unplayable. I welcome it

  • 03.04.2011 11:35 AM PDT

My hopes are that it takes the WoW model in terms of content and subscription fees. Have a base price set for each month of service and users will additionally have to purchase expansions when they are released.

The micro-transaction model, in my opinion, is really limiting. You have to assume that not everyone has everything and your players get divided up pretty quickly. Not to mention that many charge you to level past a certain point or for access to new content and dungeons. I would much rather pay a flat fee and get everything at once.

The biggest problem with free to play games (besides lack of funds to properly support the servers) is that microtransactions usually offered OP abilities/weapons/materials etc. that make imbalanced gameplay.

I have to say...I'm pretty disappointed. I wanted another deep story. Halo is the deepest universe I've had the pleasure of knowing. Now, the disappointment of multiplayer only, makes me sigh.

While it is certainly true that MMOs are behind the curve in being able to tell a player character driven story, they are still making great strides.

As much hate as there is for WoW, it is one of the deepest and most expanded upon universes out there. The ability to have a persistent world that can continually change opens up multiple opportunities to tell great stories.

Don't think of it as a multiplayer only experience like a game of Halo matchmaking, think of it as a story based game that has co-op with hundreds of people at once.

Hmmm...I suppose you're right. I've never played WoW or any other MMO. I just thought of them as massive multiplayer. But, if what you said is true, then I guess it won't be as bad as I thought. I just hope I don't have to pay some monthly fee or membership fee or whatever.

"I'm not fat, I'm trustworthy"

Keep in mind guys that we as a fan base cannot say with 100% certainty that this will be a subscription based game just cause Activision is involved.

On the other side of the coin, it is a Bungie game so if its good I, along with many, will pay whatever they decide to charge us.

Lets see what they announce before we speculate too severely.

Agreed.

Activision does make me a bit nervous but they're not in a very powerful position on the game. They're only partners to Bungie's independence, not owners of them like they were for Infinity Ward.

That said a console MMO with a subscription based fee... with Xbox LIVE already charging a subscription fee I don't think it would blow over very well...

That and they said it's MMO ACTION game. We still have no idea if it'll just be something like MAG with just massive player counts in the game, not a persistant online world like WoW is.

No. It's not a First-Person Shooter. Without it being in First-Person it can't be a First-Person Shooter. That's not hard to understand. It is also not vague.

It can still be an MMO and a massively multiplayer action game, in fact, how could it have massive multiplayer without being online?

- JFKES

I should have clarified this. Not calling it an MMO means that Bungie is trying to not put it into the same category as an MMO-RPG, which is what many people associate MMOs as. MMOs can be anything, on any subject matter, or a number of them at once as long as many people play it at one and interact in a large, often player-defined area(s) (ie: multiple clan controlled territories per map). MMO-RPGs tend to be menu-based (lots of Clicking/ button pushing) and often use turn based and dice-roll mechanics to handle combat and events (look at internal commands/mechanics).

Update 1-------------------------------------------------------
Concerning Fees and (micro)Transactions
Bungie's MMO will most likely have no fees of any kind (exept for DLC or micro-transactions. ie: Mass Effect 2's Firepower pack 80 mP=3 new weapons) if they want to keep their loyal fan bese.
Since Bungie is paired up with activision, the game should probably be made for consoles, and no fee of any kind should be needed to play.

I hope this answers some questions and eases some of your worries, but rember, the content my Fees/(micro)Transactions section is only speculation based upon both companies' history, recent and long-term.
