Subject: MMO or MAG?

The web is buzzing with the announcement that Bungie's new IP will be a MMO. However, I've been noticing that when people say "MMO", they think WOW or Everquest, etc. The quote from the GDC panel was "Massively Multiplayer Action Game". So are we talking about an MMO or MAG.

My theory is that the FPS genre has been good to Bungie. So good that they don't want to leave it behind. This makes me think that we're going to be looking at something more like PS3's MAG (Massive Action Game). If this were the case, knowing Bungie, there'd be more of a story.

So what do you guys think? Please comment/speculate.

My assumption is that people are being pretty ridiculous and narrow when they say it'll be like WoW/Everquest after all these statements from Bungie. I'd guess it's far closer to something like MAG than WoW, but probably something still different and unique alltogether.

I totally agree. People tend to jump to conclusions. I'd love to see something like Star Wars Battlefront, but on a scale like MAG where there are space battles and ground battles going on at once.

I would say a MMO-FPS, so in effect the core gameplay will be like the game MAG, but more likely with Halo typical gameplay and hopefully changing objectives like in Killzone 2/3.
Add to that a really deep custimization and class system to replace the RPG part, and a few hub worlds without any action for the social part.

Kind of like a semi-MMO that makes you feel like you're there with thousands of people, while in reality it are just a few hundred at most.

Not 1 big living map, but a hubworld from which you choose to fight on a number of maps so to speak.

No company that uses terms like, head-to-head, man-on-man, action-sack, and mancannon is homophobic.
I supposed that teabagging is.... what, a representation of a new form of colonoscopy?

I agree with it probably being a MMO-FPS. Maybe something like PlanetSide, a persistent-world FPS, with an ongoing battle between two factions.

And ya, I think a lot of people are misunderstanding this as being another WoW.

Thats because most people are too dumb to understand that MMO just stands for Massively Multiplayer Online, and not per definition in combination with the RPG genre.
There could be MMO-FPS, MMO-Sims, MMO-RTS, MMO-Football and MMO-Racing games and the list goes on and on.
But most people here can't see beyond their limited vision of things so it seems.

I doubt this will be an RPG. Bungie has lots of FPS experience, and Activision already has WoW. Why make another WoW type game? Making a MMO-FPS would mean you would open a new market and increases your chances on a hit game, without competing with your other big MMO...

I'd imagine all the tools that they have developed for the community over the years are going to be at play. So you'll see something like all the lobbies that Halo has but integrated together into a smooth gameplay experience.

From what I have read and heard, MMO-FPS makes the most sense. Don't be surprised to see some space combat in there. It would make sense as to why it showed up in reach. Gotta test the waters.

Yeah I think people are somehow hearing RPG in there, when in all honesty, MMO doesn't mean RPG. Its just that the most successful MMOs are RPGs.

Vengeance only leads to an ongoing cycle of hatred.

Either way, I'm not looking forward to this. I wanted another deep story like Halo. I guess I'll just have to wait for Bungie's next project...

I agree, the term MMO is about to get a makeover. Its not an RPG folks.

That'd vbe awesome. Ship customization like in EVE would make me go crazy for cocoa puffs.

I'd like this as well. Actually, I would love that.

2/15/12: Francisco Porras, I'll miss you. Rest in Peace.

I hope its like MAG, just with a super long campaign.

Well I wouldn't go to MAG. It has nothing to do with an MMO except for the network, which allows for servers with up to 256 players. So pretty much like battlefield, except bigger.

When I first started pouring over the evidence as to what Bungie's new project will be, PlanetSide was the first thing that came to mind.

I too think it will be an evolution of this type of game. A persistent-world FPS with warring factions, but likely more open-ended and less linear in terms of who, what, and where you fight. I hope for a more mercenary feel to it, where you can pick your class, race, weapons, whatever and customize a character as you like, and then your actions choose what faction you join. Similar to a point system that some sandbox games like Saints Row or Crackdown use. But perhaps not so black and white. More like DAOC, but with more wiggle room for a gray area so that a player doesn't have to be part of a faction if they really don't want to.

The MMO-FPS is what I see when I read over the information we have available. Time will tell.

Bungie said that it has a persistent online world, which MAG doesn't have, but WoW does.
