The long, sleek, purple Covie rifle that we saw in one of the recent screens (taken from the footage at X'03) is more than likely a field rifle or a sniper rifle. For those of you who don't know which one I mean, I am refering to this one...

Two Blue Elites

I was watching "The Evolution of Halo" (The high res version) and the interesting thing was that when they showed the weapons in the old build they showed a long, sleek, purple rifle (check vid at 8:18 runtime) which they (Bungie developers) refered to as "THE ALIEN SNIPER RIFLE!" It has VERY similar features to the one pictured above. Infact, it looks almost identicle except that the barrel has been elongated in the newer version. I took the liberty of taking a pic of the weapon they are refering to. Check out the image here.

I also base this on recent info from the weekly updates that there is "a Covenant weapon that has been shown before - but never discussed."

Quote from Frankie's Weekly Update on March 5th, 2004.

He's also been working on a Covenant weapon that has been shown before - but never discussed. The first person animation looks great, and the weapon has a zoom mode too. Nathan wants to see a really cool alien interface for the zoomed view, but that's something that's still being discussed.

Notice that he is talking about a zoom feature. I am pretty sure that he is refering the one in the pic above because there are only two Covie weapons that have been shown but not discussed - the one above and the Brute's weapon.

Further evidence that this may be a sniper rifle also comes straight from the developers themselves. I was reading the Halo 2 FAQ here at bungie.net and came across this...

Q: Will the Artificial Intelligence be improved over Halo?

A: Absolutely. The enemies in Halo were no slouches but this time around expect your opponents to be more cunning and tactical in their attempts to annihilate you. Covenant forces will use the environment to their advantage and make your job that much more difficult. You'll see the Covies scurrying under ledges, leaping over obstacles, and climbing up structures. They'll fluidly move with animal-like grace while talking and coordinating amongst their squads. They'll even use flashlights to hunt down MC in the darkness. It will take all of your wits and skills to overcome your adversaries this time around.

The Human forces will also be smarter this time around. They'll work better as a team and flip over objects to create cover. The Marines will also know how to call in support from a Warthog or point out an enemy sniper for an ally to take down.

How much more evidence do you need? My conclusion is that the long, sleek, purple rifle shown above is definatly a sniper rifle. So, look out fellas, no more using range to our advantage. Those elites will snipe your b1tch-a$$ from afar!

Any comments, thoughts, disagreements?

Yeah mate. I'm sure you've hit it right on the head. I saw the Evolution of Halo vid too...it got me all excited if not just about the sniper.

Nice work getting all of that stuff. Yes i've seen the halo vid and i know what your talking about. I'm pretty sure too that that specific weapon is a covy sniper rifle.

Twelve Large ²

An army of sheep led by a lion would defeat an army of lions led by a sheep.

It's certainly possible. The weapon pictured could also be a Covenant equivalent to the Battle Rifle.

Yeah, read similair thread on TeamXbox not too long ago. Very big chance that you are correct.

Yeah, I am not ruling out the possibility that it may be another type of weapon. I am just saying that there is overwhelming evidence that it may indeed a sniper rifle. ;)

I really hope it is. the Covies main downfall was the fact that they had very little range to their attack/defense. You could snipe and pistol half of them into the ground before you actually engaged them in close quaters. I also think that a different sniper rifle in MP will add a great deal t the game.

I will be most pleased if it is very different than the Human sniper rifle. There no point in having two sniper rifles is they don't offer different advantages. I'm sure the two Sniper rifles will offer snipers very different alternatives.

Personally, I like the thundering sound of the Human sniper rifle and just the general feeling of it...but I'll hold back my conclusions on which one I'd rather use until I have actually seen/used the Covie sniper rifle in action.

Yep, it was your thread. Didn't see your name until I had already posted.

Good call, I hope it's a Covenant sniper. It was too easy (and temtping) to pick off enemies from far away and staying clear of danger. Also, in Halo 2 enemy AI will be able to move from their "area". So they could come after you, instead of just standing there, staring at you and waiting to get shot.

Good point. I forgot about how they will chase you down in Halo 2 instead of just standing there and dodging bullets. Man, its gonna be so sweet. They'll send out a squad to attack you while they snipe you from a distance too. Nice.

Rattlesnake: We don't know what the enironment looks like behind the camera. They could be overlooking a large open area, indoors or outdoors.

I think the Covenant will have a sniper rile but it'll probably be the hardest weapon to get ahold of. I mean when you think Elites (the only likely ones to use it) its not their style to snipe people when they prefer the Plasma Rifle so it'll be quite scarce and only available in certain situations where the Elites have almost been forced into sniping by their commanders.

I dont think it a rifle because there are just to many damn shots on the screen...

The War will wage forever; though with it's fury comes a peace that you will never know here.

I think that it's very likely that it's a sniper rifle, but we could all be easily wrong...

It has to be a sniper rifle. It has a long barrel they said it has a scope and if that
human vs covenant on mp is true then it would have to be a sniper rifle because they
need to make it fair.If the humans have a sniper rifle than the covenant have to have one.So i
say yes.

very nice spartan i found that little quote from bungie about taking out an enemy sniper in october. i do think that it is a covy sniper. its got a scope. its got a long barrel but the only thing that gets me is that in the pic with 2 elites, they are both inside covering a door. why would u snipe inside in close quarters? it could also be the covy answer to the battle rifle.

Only problems I have with this theory are;

A) Why would two guards guarding a closed door be carrying sniper weapons? They'd be next to useless if something actually came through. Maybe a tenuous point, but I think it's relevant. Edit - Sorry. just noticed that this was pointd out whilst I was typing :)

B) Covenant weaponry is obviously plasma based, and plasma does not have the 'instant hit' nature required for a sniper weapon. Unless the Covies have found a way to make the plasma bolts travel much faster since their weaponry in Halo, then their sniper weapons would suck. However, this could be the way that Bungie have gotten around the game being stupidly hard, (imagine Elites on Legendary skill with Human sniper rifles, yikes!), as you'd have more of a chance of dodging their shots if they were relatively slow projectiles compared to Human bullets.

Maybe the snipers that Bungie talk about aren't Covenant. For those who've read the books - maybe Ackerson's hostile intentions towards Spartans means we're fighting Humans in Halo 2 as well as Covenant.
