I fail to see how falling and explosions are the same...
Something was going fast when it hit something else. The same... right?

Is i just me or does it seem weird that noble 6 (in reach), and master chief (in H 3) can both surive a jump from space but can be blown up with grenades?

Canonically locking your armor (and superpressurising the gel layer in turn) would only shield you internally, it would not stop bullets and projectiles from penetrating the armor or shield. It only keeps the persons body sound internally. They are still relying on the strength of the armor externally to keep them in one piece. Anything that could of damaged the armor from the outside still would.

It prevents blunt force trauma, that's about it.

Inside another dead body. It's the last place they'll look
A corpse within a corpse.
CORPSEPTION.
Win.

Both of them had some sort of aid in getting to the ground, both had the armour itself.
There is no real defence against a hail of shrapnel.
