Humanity having an empire capable of warring with the forerunners hundreds of thousands of years ago (or is it tens of thousands?) seems to be really unlikely and even if it were canon, why is something this big not mentioned until 2011 (ten years after the creation of the Halo Universe) by a person not from bungie?

Seems unlikely? Says who? I mean, seeing as that civilization was completely destroyed (from what I've heard), and then the halo rings fired, there wouldn't be much of any trace of it.

says the rules of canon!!!!!!!!!!!

Bungies guide to Halo Canon
Halo Cryptum being the newest book in the halo franchise is placed between halo wars and halo legends on the list in the post, and as for who says its canon? well 343i says it's canon, anything halo related has to pass by their creative director Frank O'Connor who is a former Bungie employee. so stop having a fit over the shocking revelation and deal with it.

Because Bungie doesn't own the Halo IP anymore. 343 Industries is in control and they are now the new authority on canon and able to create and expand as they choose.

like i said 343i has to look it over, but ultimately the rules Bungie laid out still stand.

If Cryptum isn't canon because it wasn't done by Bungie then neither are any of the other books except for Contact Harvest, which is the only one that was written by someone at Bungie. Your logic is flawed...it doesn't have to be written by Bungie to be canon. And besides, all the important plot devices of all the stories come from information provided by Halo Story Bible, which was written by Bungie, so everything in Cyptum is completely canon.

and to be honest, despite the shocking revelation that humans have traveled in space before, this actually doesn't change existing canon all that much

Because Muslims surgically implant organic bombs in their testicles, which in turn will be injected into women during sex, which will grow into BABY BOMBS!

Why is it unlikely? It's a fictional story. And after the Humans lost, the Forerunners cut them down to size by basically devolving them.

I don't understand why the humans didn't just ask the Forerunners for help against the Flood. The Didact says that the Forerunners didn't even know about the Flood until after defeating the humans, which I find hard to believe.

It was probably an ONI cover-up. Even ancient humanity had ONI to cover everything up.

maybe because humans were very proud then and asking for help made them look weak

Humanity didn't need help beating the flood, the succeeded in it on their own. What they needed was living space, something the Forerunners weren't willing to give. And in the beginning of the war, the humans were kicking Forerunner ass.

You are absolutely wrong; that thread is NOT "Bungie's" guide to canon, it is some fan's guide to canon. There is nothing official about it and the hierarchy he proposed is, I must respectfully and quite gently say, severely flawed.

There are natural laws as to what is Canon and what isn't, and you are clearly ignorant of them. Would you mind to inform me of these "Rules of Canon" you mention? I have never seen such a thing, other than my own personal rules.

The thread itself is not Bungie's. It is a poster's "guide to cannon." The RULES for cannon as stated in the OP of that thread however(The ranking of games, then books, then other PR/marketing, and the ranking of newer stuff overriding older stuff)are a direct quote from Joe Staten at Bungie and have always been Bungie's cannon rules. Now that 343I is in charge, that may change, but they so far haven't really said anything to the contrary other than them trying to make everything that's out there fit into cannon properly in SOME way.

I haven't finished the book yet, but I remember the Didact saying that the Flood pushed the humans back, and they had no choice but to move into Forerunner territory.

So surely, rather than fight another war, they would have asked the Forerunners for help against the true enemy; the Flood?

-blam!- Was that actually blammed out? Or did I just type it? You'll never know.

Yeah, I don't really like the novel either. It's just ruining the Haloverse for me.

By the power of truth, I, while living, have conquered the universe.

Sorry, but this thread is -blam!- retarded.

You realise that Nylund, Dietz and Buckell were not Bungie employees? Contact Harvest is the only novel to date written by a Bungie employee.

Why is it unlikely? It's almost 10 years since Halo began, the mystery of the Forerunners is old hat now. Think of this to be like the Star Wars prequels, detailing the events that build up to the rest of the series (except Cryptum is better than all the SW prequels).

You do realise that Ancient Humanity was devolved, right? They were blasted back to the Stone Age and became the humans we are today, there is nothing at all in the Halo universe to contradict that.

Humans killed flood, Forerunners didn't like that.
therefore they devolved us to cavemen.

Oni covered up????
the chances that Oni existed then is: 4+4=8 so 0,000001 maybe

*Claps slowly*

Had you read the rest of my post, you'd have known what I'd been getting at.

Cryptum doesn't ruin the Halo story or backstory in any way at all. -_-

I believe you may have set a new record for the amount of total failure in one post.

The Forerunners didn't war with humanity because they killed the Flood. It was because humanity was encroaching on their territory, and probably a few other reasons.

With regards to ONI, I was joking, you utter tool. Could you really not see that?

Had you read my previous post, you'd have known that it completely destroys the Halo series for the chief reason that the story is retarded.
