Subject: Will Cortana think herself to death?

As you all know the ending to halo 3 and how cortana and master chief are floating in space the main question is what is to become of them?

Ive read on diffrent forum posting that coratna is a smart ai and is to have a general life span of 7 years...

From the information i gathered though from dr hasleys journal it states that the ai were dying becuase they would learn new information and go into umm memory but eventually the data would crossover itself until it got to dense then the ai would snap and go rampant or it would go crazy and try to save itself by shutting down.

somewhere in the journal though i remeber reading that hasley discovered a way for the ai to reach in to shaw-fujika space or somthing like that and instead of denseley packing the information it would expand into a new segment and so forth... so the ai could continue on forever.

in the halo reach data pads one of them mentions << Incredible. [10141-026-SRB4695], with minimal influence from this Assembly, has attempted to build an abstract fractal structure within Shaw-Fujikawa Space. Although her first attempt was a failure, success could finally remove our dependence on biological systems altogether! If our Minds could somehow achieve freedom of expansion within eleven-dimensional space, immortality might be within reach. <<

Soo on the 8th mission (the package)before you enter to get cortana hasley said she was makeing last minute adjustments or somthing... so could it be she found a way for the ai to continue on and was upgrading cortana so she could last forever?

What do you guys think? (plzz correct me if im wrong)

your right XD and this is why cheif and cortana can only get stronger XD

I heard Cortana may of reached the stage after being rampant. I forget what it's called. But the only other AI i think that got to this stage is mendicant bias. And i think she could of maybe absorbed some form of forerunner tech/knowledge to allow her to last alot longer. Basically, i think she'll just sit and wait for cheif to be rescued, and while that's happening she'll have a chance to sift through all the data she absorbed on installation 04

Ya somthing along those lines either way she wont be melting down anytime soon right? cant say the same goes for the spirit of fire though :(

Really, it remains to be seen. Cortana has definitely gone through rampancy, after obtaining immense amounts of data from Inst. 04, High Charity and The Ark etc. as well as being tormented by the Gravemind. It's possible she has passed through rampancy and become meta-stable but I believe she is still rampant at the end of Halo 3.

As for the use of Slipspace as a means of having infinite processing space for AI, that concept has not come to fruition by the time of Cortana's creation so it does not apply to her.

Realistically, I can't see 343i killing off a main character just yet so I'd say she will not "die" anytime soon. Perhaps she will be retrofitted at a later time when the use of Slipspace process has been achieved, or perhaps if/when the Chief meets the Forerunner they will supply her with some technology they use for their own Ancilla which would extend her lifespan indefinitly.

not only medicant bias, I could see 343 escaping rampant after all the information he collected on POA

Hmmm i'll need more time to go over the journal...

Mendicant bias never got over rampancy. He was killed by offensive bias in 100,000 BCE. Only one small part of him survived the flood's attack on the maginot sphere aboard the dreadnought, after offensive bias split his construct into componant sections for transport, for later examination, critically damaging both his memory and his processing powers. He was offline until the Prophet of fortitude and the vice minister of tranquility activated him over the planet Harvest. He was still rampant the whole time.

At least a fragment of MB was at the Ark too, and by his actions it seems he has at least recognised his folly and attempted to rectify them.

Good point. It's true that Mendicant bias did intent to take humans to the Ark, but this can also be rampancy. The AI above Harvest known as 'SIF' was rampant after the engineer 'Lighter than some' reactivated her after the fall of Harvest. 'SIF' died telling another AI that she loved him. i think this proves that AI can still do good things and/or reflect on past descisions when rampant.

Hence why I believe Cortana is still rampant. Despite her state she has a duty and responsibility to help John and humanity and because of this she can still function effectively despite being rampant.

depends on her thought choices. Either she could think about a distress signal to earth, which will prolong her life (it would be as if she'd be a dumb AI), or she can think and try to decipher what she learned on halo, which could end in rampancy.

I put the laughter in manslaughter

I would think so..

I doubt she would anytime soon; for the sake of preserving critical characters in the fiction.

  • 03.08.2011 1:58 PM PDT

Well the big factor is if dr hasley managed to finish the upgrade for the ai or not... ( do you think she figured out how in the 13 years she had?)

It's a metaphor for the 07s' lack of identity. too old to be newfag, yet too new to be oldfag, we wander b.net in search of a home, forever trying to be something we are not.

Eventually all "smart" AI's do.

Capt Keyes, Lieut Cmdr. Keyes, All the Prophets, Johnson, Sgt. Forge, 343 Guilty Spark, the Gravemind? Well gee, preservation forever.

What is rampancy? I've heard it many times about AI, but I've never heard anyone explain what it is. :[

Yeah just for the sake of making any further down the line Halo games that involve Chief and Cortana I don't think they will have her in rampancy just yet, though that could be part of the story in the next Halo game if it involves Chief following Halo 3. But i don't see them killing off such an involved character with the Chief like Cortana. Sure Sgt Maj Johnson got whacked but i just can't seem them offing Cortana just yet.

I wholly belive they gave the Keyes' deaths so that the human civilization in the game would akin them to heroes of their time and when they most needed heroes to make people believe. As for the prophets, eh screw them they were evil little wrinkly aliens lol. I'm not sure how critical a character Sgt Forge was though. Gravemind had to be "killed" and 343 don't count. How was he even remotely relevant to the fiction? Cause he protected the Halos'? Still don't make him as big a character in my view as a Sgt Maj Johnson, Capt Keyes or Master Chief. XP

I had a dream that I was king, I woke up still king.

Eventually. It's like a human thinking so much that the mind forgets to tell the body to keep pumping blood through the heart and to keep breathing and then the person dies.

Meta Rampancy or something?

Don't worry, you're still your mom's favorite Bnet member.

It's inevitable.

Unless you are talking about meta-stability being a stage of Rampancy, which Halopedian apparently classifies it as, then you are oh so very wrong.

No source makes that claim at all, from everything describing Mendicant there was no damage done by separating the various pieces that made him up. All of his pieces survived, at least one was placed on the Ark, and then there is the one on the Dreadnought, so there are at least two pieces of him still around, and all fully functional. Mendicant Bias was made of multiple intelligences, as Halopedian, and Cryptum, puts it, IE something that can be separated, as it is made up of more than one piece that makes up the whole. And the two pieces, the one on the Ark, and the one in Dreadnought, came back together again in Halo 3 when Truth came to the Ark.

He was not activated over Harvest at all, High Charity never went anywhere near there, as far as we know. And you also seem to be mistaken in your belief that Mendicant was offline from when he was placed in the Dreadnought to when Truth, Regret, and Mercy were spoken to by him. He had spoken before to the Covenant, he used to be what they used to get the blessing for the High Prophets. What it was in Contact Harvest was that he had been silent for years, he was still online and in complete control of the Dreadnought, he just did not speak to anyone.
And at some point between being fragmented by Offensive Bias and Contact Harvest he became Metastable, which means he is essentially on the same level as a human.
