If you type a cuss word in a post, does it automatically get replaced with "-Blam!-"? I have been wondering this for a while.

Yes. Actually, that is exactly what it does. It finds a certain word, then it replaces that word with "-blam!-." I remember there was a lot of trouble with "ass," merely because: "assistant," "assassinate," "grass," "glass," etc.

Mabian jumped right on top of this. Bungie.net has a set list of words that will be –blamed- out once they are recognized by the program.

While the blam-filter is a nice tool there are three things that I would recommend all members to keep in mind.

* Please do not assume that it catches all words. It does not. The filter is meant to be helpful, but not a complete safety-net.
* Please do not think that if the filter allows a word, that it is a sign that the word is definitely permitted.
* Most of all.... Please, please PLEASE do not attempt to bypass the blam-filter or "self-censor" your words. Typing the first few letters and then asterisks, or inserting spaces, periods or using intentional misspellings to bypass the filter will get a member time off of the forums. In many cases the time off is forever.

We are all responsible for what appears to the right of our avatars. No one can "make" us type something there that we didn't want to put there in the first place.

If someone has a vulgar word to say, they should say it and let it be blammed (and be VERY sure to use the preview function to make sure that it is edited). Or, if they are going to take the time to misspell it or insert special characters, why not instead use their mental resources and type another, more acceptable word?

lol, thanks for letting us know how to bypass the filter.

of course, all of us have seen it so many times before that it doesn't really make much of a difference...but i still thought it was funny.

"My word was blammed? Well then I guess that means Bungie wants me to find a way to bypass it. I'll make it worth my while. Now, if I replace the a with @, it will look the exact same, and Bungie will say I did a good job."

I actually did a few times (in the rare occasions I have need to use profanity in the first place) use the asterisks. I learned a while back it was not permitted, and ceased my efforts. I usually don't have much trouble anyways finding a word to replace the curse. Sometimes I am willing to re-write the sentence so that I don't have to say "poop" in replacement, and still have the sentence have some power.

Would it ever be possible to turn the -blam!- filter off in private groups? I am thinking of groups like Body Politic, (a political discussion group founded by reiginko), where one of the current active topics is adoption by same gender couples, and it is extremely annoying having to alter our words to get around the -blam!- filter, as in that topic especially, one of several words could go under the -blam!- and each one of them would change the entire meaning and inflection of your post.

The only problem is that in BP, or other discussion groups, though I don't know any that could make use of this, words we would need to make a sentence seem clear (words for same-sex couples; the name of an old German fascist party) are blammed out (thank you fools who managed to get those blammed out).

There is a way that members are told in how to bypass the filter only for the group, but searching around to figure out how to make "à" can be quite tedious. Frankly I wouldn't mind such an option. But perhaps an option that only allows certain currently censored words to be allowed. After all, I don't think anyone needs to be able to put something like "I -blam!- hate you!" But in a group like BP, words like [German fascist] don't need to be blammed out, and people that would end up abusing it would be dealt with accordingly anyways.

Certainly a double-edged sword. But like all, there is the possibility of having both edges work in one's favor.

Just one quick question to ask on that matter; am I allowed to use "blímey"? I actually use the it quite a bit, and I don't think it's a word anyone could ever take offence to. Obviously it's filtered because of the "límey" component, but even then as an Englishman myself I find it hard to comprehend how anyone could be offended by it.

is there a place to submit words that the filter says are wrong and are not in any way much like the whole assissinate issue. To have thme added. I understand a word within it is bad but the word itself is fine. The word is trim with ming added. Like trim ming a tree. It gets annoying talking about editing videos and some threads with yard work and you keep getting blammed for words that aren't bad on thier own or in the reference you are using.

  • 12.26.2005 11:25 AM PDT

I hate everything, but it's not my fault.

Well unfortunately, I don't think we will ever have the option the turn the -blam!- filter off, because Achronos has said that making it an option would probably make B.Net explode. The -blam!- filter was an option back during the Old Coolness, and it worked by having the post to the server, then back to the user to check if the user had -blam!- filter, then back to the server to modify the post appropriately. Or something like that, all I remember is that is was innefficient. Now this was ok back then because there was a lot less traffic, but with the New Hotness it is not a viable option. So unless Achronos finds a way to make it sufficiently efficient, it's not going to happen.

I also am curious as to why the word that Fragula was talking about is filtered; I can't imagine why anybody would be offended by it. The British Navy stopped carrying limes to prevent scurvy a long time ago...

  • 12.26.2005 12:25 PM PDT

I'm not particularly offended by being called the lime word, but obviously some people were.

Or, in the group settings, the admin could select:

Replace:

-blam!-

with:

Nāzi.

And so on and so forth. IMO the option of -blamming!- certain words per group does seem like a good idea. I'm sure that b.net would still work, as the ToS do say

Publish, post, upload, distribute or disseminate any inappropriate, profane, defamatory, infringing, obscene, indecent or unlawful topic, name, material or information.

TBH, if someone want to make a pr0n centered group they could already. But I ask, why?

Is there any way in which we can request some new words to be added to the filter? I have a couple which I know are "bad" words, that by-pass the filter.

It is most certainly a mystery to me as to why words that could not possibly be used as an offensive term get blammed, but I think it will remain that way. Though what truly baffles me is that "lïmey" is blammed (apparently), but "noob," or any of its odd cousins (n00b, n0ob, etc.), is not. Then again, it would be hard to think about every possible combination of the letters, numbers, and symbols that could be used in order to bypass the filter. Plus it isn't worth it, because in the end, people will bypass it.

But surely sending Achronos a PM will not simply get a word blammed. Obviously, because otherwise I could make up some story about how I am a Knight of Ni, and the word "it" is incredibly offensive to me. It surely must be something that is out of control, in which people use it left and right as an offensive turn (then ruining it for those who may use the word as part of a discussion).

How is l1mey offensive? Maybe it's like a British thing or something, but I don't get it.

Actually, I don't think I've ever even heard the word before.

It was a derogatory way that Americans say "British". In the days of sailing ships, usually the sailors consumed large amounts of citrus fruit to make sure they had enough vitamin C to prevent scurvy. I'm assuming it's origin comes from the fact that because most Americans early in the United State's history often only saw "real" British that had recently come off a boat.

Honestly,I don't see how it's offensive. I don't care if someone calls me a Yankee, but then again someone might take offense if someone called them the dreaded "N" (and by that I don't mean noob) word; which I guess is somewhat similar.

heh, the "dbag bomb" has also been blammed. I think I've actually encountered use of the "l-word" - mainly stupid kids browsing the web for insults. It's not so much that it's offensive, just that people don't enjoy being called it.

"Lïmey" is a very old British term. (Why it is used today, I don't know. It is used today, right?)

To make a short story shorter: Scurvy is a disease that you get from Vitamin C deficiency. To prevent it, captians would give the sailors limes. They earned the nickname "lïmeys" because of it, and the name stuck.

I'm positive that is the origin.
