NB: I have made this thread about 3 times, but because of how long it is, it never got read, and just got lost in the "OMGAWD BR SPREADZ" threads.
With less people on the forum, I thought it was a good chance to repost. Obviously it doesn't mean anything, but it's a good read, IMO. Good luck, and good reading.
Midship vs. Heretic - Visual Differences and more.
What I'm going to do, is have a title that is where my Spartan is standing to where he is looking to. I have taken screenshots from H3 and capped some from H2.
The differences aren't huge in a way of layout, but detail is immensely different and there are MANY small changes. There are, however, a few big differences.
Visual
So, let's have a look at the differences between the two maps.

So there you go, that is the comparison between Midship (Halo 2) and Heretic (Halo 3) to just about every aspect of each map.
Gameplay
Pink Tower
Now, if you look at the Pink Tower in Midship, you would notice that it is a lot larger than the Pink Tower in Heretic. This has a pretty big affect on the gameplay in Heretic. P2 in H3 is like a trap. You walk in there, and you get naded. You most likely won't survive. However, in H2, P2 was a good place to take cover, it was larger and therefor, you didn't get affected by nades if they were on the other side.
Hitscan BRs vs. H3 BRs
H2 also used hitscan BRs, which meant that you didn't have to lead your shots, and the bullets registered the moment you pulled the trigger. Hitscan BRs made the Gameplay on Heretic much faster, because you didn't have to lead your shots. Another thing is that Midship was smaller than Heretic, but had bigger platforms. This also caused gameplay to be much faster.
Plasma Grenades
We all know that Midship had Plasma Grenade starts, but does this mean that Heretic should? In Halo 3, the Plasma Grenades have a bigger blast radius, this in turn makes Heretic a HUGE nade fest, with overpowered grenades. Do you think that Heretic would be better off with Frag' starts?
Spawns
Personally, I think that the spawns in Heretic are quite ridiculous. This is not the fault of the map itself, but more the spawn system that is in H3. From what I know, you didn't spawn at Carbine in Midship, but you can in Heretic.
Good thing or bad thing? I'll let you be the judge.
In Midship, I believe that the spawns are less randomized and more concentrated, where as in Heretic, you spawn in pretty ridiculous spots half the time. Especially when one of the most prominent spawns in Heretic, being Carbine, is filled with Fusion Coils.
Pink Tower
On Midship, everyone knew that Pink Tower was key to winning. This is also true about Heretic, but in Heretic, it is harder to hold, because Pink 2 is much smaller and Pink 3 is less effective. This is partly because of the Hitscan BR and the fact that P3 is slightly bigger on Midship.
Equipment
Equipment! Does it break the map or make the map? I think that it breaks the map. The Bubble Shield in Default Heretic majorly slows gameplay. How? It completely blocks corriders and allows the Sword to be ridiculously OP. It can block off the whole of P2, and someone with a Sword, in a Bubble, on P2, could single handedly change the outcome of the game.
Personally, I believe that Equipment is a negative addition to Midship.
Weapon Glitches (BxR, BxB, Double Shot, etc.)
Weapon glitches were a huge part of Halo 2, and a big part of Midship. Just for those who don't know.
BxR = Melee and then BR (or any re loadable weapon) shot straight away (can only be done with a full clip, unless you midclip BxR).
BxB = Melee and then much faster than usual, another Melee (can't be done with a full clip).
Double Shot = As it suggests. Two consecutive BR shots, so, a burst of 6 BR bullets in one go.
These weapon glitches made the gameplay a lot faster and a lot more hectic. If someone came around the corner, you could BxR them and then would be dead. It would be faster the BxR someone, than to stick them. In Halo 3, you can't do these glitches, so the best you can do is stick them, nade/BR them or Melee/BR them. It really does change the gameplay a lot.

Summary
Visaully, I think Heretic is MUCH prettier. It is far more detailed and looks much smoother. In terms of gameplay, I much prefer Midship and the Halo 2 style of gameplay. They are pretty much identical in Layout (few differences), but still play in a much different way. I find Heretic to be slower in gameplay, but much prettier and Midship to be fast-paced and fun.
If you have played Halo 2, do you prefer Midship or Heretic?
Tell me what you think, and please don't flame other peoples opinions.
I'd like to thank Commview (Palindrome) and CaLL mE JazZa for giving me insight and opinion on differences between the maps.
Cheers.
