these: fraps but you only get 30 seconds each time unless you pay for the full version, and gamecam which you can record as long as you want but you get no sound unless you register and im not sure if registering costs money.
there are more but thats what i have and for me none slow down preformance but some people say fraps does. search gamecam with google and you should find it and go to fraps.com for fraps

in my opinion being a bit of a game movie maker and having experience in both the unregistered/unpaid versions of gamecam/fraps and the registered/paid version of gamecam/fraps and in my opinion the paid version of fraps is by far the best with the highest frame rates and audiovideo syncing is much better. it will give some ppl a bit of lag issue if your not running enough RAM to handle both the game and the recorder. I suggest a gig at least.

there is a BIG but in fraps tho. with fraps you need a video compressor. there are free trial one's all over the internet but finding an actual free one is something i have yet to be able to accomplish, at least one that compresses into something like mpeg-4. however if you plan on designing te movie fairly quickly I suggest Tsunami Mpeg Encoder. just google any of these names i'm mentioning and you'll get links. I think gamecam records your files already into compressed files. not sure.

and as far as programs to actually make the movie. well my FIRST movie i used Windows Movie Maker. which is on you pc if you have windows xp.. just do a Start>search>Windows Movie Maker and it should give you an .exe. and once your a little more experienced you might wanna move on to something more along the lines of Dazzle, which is a great tool... it's just a wee bit expensive depending on what your using it for.

all in all it can be a little discouraging at first. jsut don't give up, have fun and good luck to ya

you dont need to compress it if your using windows movie maker. It will do it for you when you drag the clips into the thing and press save my movie and you selct the stuff. you notic that you gigabit of video just turned out to be 30-40mb with windows movie maker.
