I agree somewhat, the ways the authors have killed off Spartans have been pretty dumb for what a Spartan is. I mean, yeah, they're not invincible or anything and die just like the rest of us, but I definitely feel like killing them off by having a pulse of Plasma burn them to a crisp. One or two odd deaths are fine, like Kat's, but killing them off like that instance in First Strike is just dumb. Their deaths should be like Sam's/Kurt's/Jorge's deaths or go down like Will or Six, fighting tooth and nail to the death. It's not Bungie though doing the odd killing, it's the writers of the books who do it, I doubt Bungie really specifies how they are to die with everyone.
Well the Brutes are a little stronger than Elites, but yes, it is absurd how First Strike portrayed them, you kinda have to remember though that it was going off of Halo 2's incarnation of them, which is not how they are at all, Brutes are extremely tough, but they're not invincible damage sponges that can shrug off a full AR mag to the face or take two sword blows before dying. Frankly though, I think most of the books do a horrible job at portraying the military power of the Covenant. The way the books do things the UNSC should not have had any victories whatsoever and Humanity should have been completely exterminated. I mean like, they have one single plasma pistol shot pretty much taking out a Spartan's shields, and I'm not talking about an overcharged shot, I'm talking about just a normal one, or a Banshee completely totally an undamaged 'Hog, when we've all seen an undamaged one take a hit and be heavily damaged, but still being completely functional. The only book that the Covenant felt right in was Contact Harvest, and that was written by one of the story writers at Bungie.
