This feature wouldn't be hard to build in and it would add ALOT more customization to the individual chapters. All the themes have there default CSS's that were created by the creator of the theme. Each themes original CSS would would be the default one and there could be a editor in the administrator panel. This would be practical because every group already has its own folder in the fanclub directory so the CSS files wouldn't be corrupting other groups.

For anyone that doesn't know CSS stands for Cascading Style Sheet which essential makes up the theme of your chapter besides the images.

If you had access to your css in a group you would be able to change lots of things about your group's appearance. I think you would be able to change the color of things.

I like this idea.

I like it. Well if we are lucky it might happen soon.

  • 12.27.2005 1:51 PM PDT

yea but with CSS access you could do alot more than just color . you could change the members text if color , apperance . or if u messed up you could make ur chapter all messed up

They could make something that only lets you change certain parts of your css. That way you couldn't screw it up.

Sounds cool. I wouldn't use it a whole lot, as I have no artistic ability, but I'm sure some people would do some awesome things with it.

but CSS is so boring, i'd rather have full HTML and PHP access so i could pimp out my group the way i want it, but somehow, i don't think that'll be happening any time soon.

CSS is very powerful - you can do things with it that would make it very bad to grant a group full access to the CSS.

It be better to leave the groups as they are (otherwise why will the Thememasters bother spending all that time?).

I think it would just mess up the 7th column, if you've got a really good idea why don't you just make a whole theme.

Full CSS access isnt necessary, and as Achronos said.. Thats a little TOO much power for a group.

BUT. To make groups more unique it would be good if we could fiddle with the colours of SOMEthings. Or, if we could change the general layout of our group. (Such as the way you can change the layout of your MSN space for example. There's a mode where you can go in, click and drag things to have your blog at the top, photos to the side, and where you place all the main things. If THAT were possible, that'd be cool.

I could think of many a thing that I'd rather see in the Column; most of which being considerably safer and easier to develop than custom CSS. I mean, sure themes are good, but think about the ratio of people who have admin powers/are founders of groups to people who know CSS, and moreover know it well, and things don't look too promising.

I know that...man you might as well close B.net if you allow ppl to have CSS powers. Go back to the poney express for communication, and the Dark Ages for behavior. Even though there is little difference with most ppl here.

To solve this problem and Achronos's you could make a form. That way Achronos can select the CSS properties that we are allowed to customize. A form would put alot more constraints on the the changes you can make and it would be user friendly to thoughs not gifted with scripting knowledge. As constrained as it is; it would still retain enough customizability to make individual groups unique.

Guardian Hunter has a good point, I'm too lazy to learn CSS.

I agree with Psyched that there are many things I'd love to see implemented first. The Bnet team is just too small for all the stuff that we could use. I think they should hire a few more people for it.

There'd have to be character limits for each text box. I did consider it, but I don't see it working. What if there were a border-style field? I'm sure it would be simple enough to type in solid; font-size: 100px unless each were a drop-down selection. But to be fair, do you really expect most of the people who use this to have a clue design-wise? Yeah, it's their group, but everyone likes personalisation, and maybe it's not too fair on them if they mess something up. Plus, there's no way to change the images, so colour ranges would be extremely limited.

  • 12.28.2005 2:59 AM PDT

Yea if they did have that , people would just mess their groups up .And if some 1 else had admin power in a group and they got mad they could make the group almost unreadiable. And still if u could use CSS you couldn't change the pics . The drop-down way would work well for some people , But what if u just suck horriably with the internet and just pick weird colors.... And group conqs would try to get CSS power and they could go and make the group "ugly" enough where members want to leave.

I'd appreciate giving the Theme Builder more customisation potential - there have been several times when the fixed layout has scuppered a good theme idea I've had - but I can't really see how granting full access to style.css on a per-group basis will benefit most users enough to warrant the risk.

That is the thing it isn't that risky. I know you can do alot of things with CSS but if you limit it by creating a form with a few drop down option's as Psyched suggested and maybe you have 10 or 20 drop down boxes with the 10 theme CSS's there already are that would equal alot of different groups even though you not giving them full CSS. Access to CSS could just be certain ranks post in a different color or on mouse over your links change a different color than normal. It doesn't have to be extravagant stuff like changing the body background color or the forum's alternating row colors. Just simple things would be nice.

This is a pretty good idea. Although some people wouldn't know what to do and would make there chapters with a black background and black text. There are alot of other projects bungie could be working on.
