Subject: Is recon nr 54 human?

Do you know what kind of hat I'm wearing?

A party hat; you don't get one. An honor will this party be, a party in your honor, for your honor. Some of Tfear's personal guards are going to be there. You'll be introduced shortly.

Prepare to die.

I am kind of confused by recon nr 54 since Bungie has never released a statement in wich they said that he is human.

There are some reasons to believe that he is in fact a cyborg (
a batlledroid to be specific)

1. He/it has special abilities that only 'people' of his kind have.

2. He/it has no friends.
When you look at what he/it says you'll notice that no 'one seems very joyfully to see him, or share a common personal history.
I have a theory to explain this fact; recon is put in stasis until he is needed, so he isn't attached to humans.

3. He/it doesn't show emotions.
He does what is best for us and isn't afraid of anything.

4. He/it can't be killed.

So, do you think he/it is an android or that he/it is a human after all?
And can someone give me a counteragrument to prove that recon is a human?

In a time long past, the armies of the dark came again to the lands of men. Their leaders became known as the fallen lords, and their terrible sorcery was without equal in the west.
In 30 years they reduced the civilized nations into carrion and ash. Until the free city of Madrigal alone defined them. An army gathered there, and a desperate battle was joined against the fallen
Heros were born in the fire and bloodshed of the wars which followed and their names and deeds will never be forgotten

Yes he is.

*you mean Recon the moderator right?!?

Yes he is.

So... how would you refute my arguments?

Isn't Foman a lawyer?

Recon the ninja is a consultant.

The Marathon cyborg is a Mjolnir Mark IV cyborg supersoldier, which is somewhat equivalent to a Spartan. Additionally, he's Roland's reincarnation (like MC) which makes him even more superhuman.

I was wondering if he was still considered a human, since he was altered more severe than MC.
Easy to manufacture chips enhanced the fragile human brain,
and genetically enhanced muscles and titanium bones replaced
the fragile human form. The modern battleroid was born. Of
course, the war was short. Battleroids got onto both
asteroids and killed almost everyone.

I wake up to find myself
After all these years
And where all the time has gone
Still seems so unclear

Only >75% of him. But that's debatable too.

Not an easy man to see I guess... because only you would survive the fall...

On a less enigmatic note, you seem to be referring to Marathon's Security Officer as "Recon Number 54". However the Security Officer and Mjolnir Recon Number 54 are not necessarily the same person. Mjolnir Recon Number 54 is only mentioned once in all of Marathon lore (Terminal 2, Fire!, Fire!, Fire!, Fire!, Fire!, Marathon 1). Almost nothing is known about him.

However if you would like to debate that Marathon's protagonist the Security Officer (who is also a Mjolnir cyborg) never shows any emotions, I would submit the dream terminals from Marathon Infinity as proof of his emotional distress and guilt at the death and destruction he has caused (Terminal 0: 2nd Message, Where are monsters in dreams?, Marathon Infinity).

I'm thinkin' Robocop status. Like mostly machine, but there's still that tiny bit of humanity left.

Is this the correct citation for Marathon terminals, or do you just make this up?

Obviously it is absolutely the only acceptable citation for Marathon terminals. You must use it every time or you will suffer the same fate as the Nar. Don't derail the thread with silly questions M12. Otherwise seven men in overcoats will jump from the shadows and carry you away, never to be seen again.

Thanks for the tips.

As for the topic, I think the Security Officer was resurrected from the man in Pathways Into Darkness. Sgt. Eddings' body parts and machine parts were used to create the Security Officer, but that is just a theory.

It really comes down to how you define human. One with a heart, or one that has living tissue with a functional brain.

Cyborg means that he is partly human, though I don't think he has a heart, I think that he has a human brain though.

Marathon infinity has always and is still a riddle to me.

I've argued this idea back and forth with Ender. It is a tempting idea considering Eddings' abilities to survive the temple, stop the dreaming god (W'rkncacnter), and use the yellow crystal to talk to the dead. However in the Marathon Timeline, Battleroids first appear in 2914. Though Eddings' age is not known, it can be assumed that he was between 18 and 35 during the events of Pathways in 1994. Assuming he was 18 (i.e. as young as possible) in 1994 and lived to be 100 (unlikely), he would have died in 2076. As stated above, Battleroids did not appear until 2194.

It doesn't really make any sense that an old soldier's corpse would be somehow preserved for over 100 years for the purpose of constructing a Battleroid (the technology for which almost certainly didn't exist at the time of Eddings' death). Particularly when there were plenty of other fresh dead soldiers in 2194. Also the Security Officer (SO) was a Mark IV Mjolnir cyborg, which implies that there were earlier versions before the Mark IV. If Eddings was so important, why wait until version IV to use his corpse?

It is a nice idea to think of Sgt. Eddings and the SO being one in the same. It is thematically and symbolically compelling considering the SO's role as Destiny in Infinity's final screen. But taking it literally is going too far. It really isn't possible that Eddings' corpse was reanimated to create the SO.

You aren't alone there H0FFman. Infinity is a convoluted story which is difficult to fully comprehend. But with effort, its details can be deciphered. During the events of the Marathon series, many different AIs do try to use the SO to further their own goals. However, the terminals of Marathon Infinity's dream levels are a trip into the mind of the SO. For the first time, the player is able to read what the SO is thinking and feeling.

The story of Marathon Infinity can't really be described both succinctly and adequately. However the basic premise is that the SO jumps between multiple realities in his attempt to stop the release of the W'rkncacnter and subsequent destruction of the universe. He does this by using the Jjaro implants which he first received when he was reanimated and make him so much more than just a regular soldier.

Sard, your knowledge of Marathon is comparable to the Pope's knowledge of the bible!

Also, That 10th Warrior video has to be one of my favourites :)

Thanks for enlightening me, that actually makes more sense than what I thought was happening.

I read somewhere that an AI exists inside of Mjolnir Recon Number 54, and throughout the Marathon series, it goes through the three stages of Rampancy.

I honestly have no idea what it is. Though perhaps, in a more cryptic sense, John-117 and the protagonist of Bungie's new IP can reveal who Mjolnir Recon Number 54 really is.

(I have a very basic understanding of the Marathon universe, as you can tell).
