Subject: Did it have to be changed?

After reading the varitable cornucopia of "Reach, errors in canon" threads, I got to thinking. Did the story have to be changed as much as it did to cater to the story of Noble Team?

Granted, Noble Team's existence in and of itself was a change in canon. But I think that's an easier one to get around. And since the Reach's story is based solely on Noble Team, we're gonna leave that one in.

The next part is going to be pretty long, so if you don't want to read it all, just comment or speculate on my question.

This is how I think the story of Reach should have gone:

WARNING LONG READ:

Same beginning, except instead of finding the covenant right away, you find out that the com has indeed been sabotaged by insurrectionists. A few bungie employees stated that innies were left out because fighting humans could get confusing, but I think that would be perfect. Not knowing who was an innie and who was a civilian would have been a great mechanic.

Anyway, you fight the insurrectionist for a while then the covenant show up, and the first wave is like it is in the game a small recon force that slips in under the radar. Noble Team engages said force and frantically tries to warn the rest of the planet. The story continues as it does in the game, with the long night of solace mission. the plan is the same, but instead of falling back to the planet, you get back up to your sabre, and leave the blast radius, only to see the rest of the covenant fleet come in.

The first bit of the next mission is in space. And its all as it happend in the Novel. You'd be ordered by Cpt Keyes to protect the dock as Blue team destroyed the circumference. Keyes doesn't have to know you're a spartan either. you just announce yourself and he asks for your help. you never land so none of them ever see you, and you're just one of the many support ships, so its not too far out. And all through this section you hear radio chatter from Blue Team and maybe even Red Team as they're descending down to Reach.

After that, your ship gets badly damages and you're forced to dock with the UNSC Dawn Under Heaven. Your ship is scrapped, so you're kind of stranded. The ship begins to be boarded. you try your best to fend off the covenant, but they're too overwhelming, so you pull back to the docking bay with 3 or 4 marines (marines, not army troopers like the ones planetside. also a good opportunity to introduce some new reoccuring, non-spartan characters as I don't think reach had enough. ex. johnson, CDR Keyes, Arbiter) and escape in a Pelican... a flyable Pelican. You fly away as Dawn Under Heaven self-destructs per the Cole Protocol.

You make it planetside and make contact with Kat and the rest of Noble team. Since the marines with you have pretty much lost their COs, they stick with you for the Exodus mission. Instead of flying escort, you take on the roll of the evacuation boat for the beginning of the mission. You evacuate a bunch of civilians with the marines acting as security details. After you get them to the airport, you and your squad of marines (who dog on the Army troops and seem to be way more badass) continue the mission as it happens in the game. you activate the anti-air missile pods.

This is all happening in a short amount of time, so immediately after that you and your marines get back in your pelican and play through the New Alexandria mission. after that, you go back to sword to meet up with dr. Halsey again(I know her seeing the Sp III's is a stretch, but I think she's the kind of person who would keep it to herself until she met up with Kurt in GoO.)

At this point your little squad of marines have come to respect you hardcore. They're the guys that are with you on The Package, instead of the ODST squad. It would be cool if in a cinematic before you make it to sword base, you almost get annihilated by an elite, but your marine buddies pull an ODST and they all tackle it and take him out. For some reason, you deploy them to go secure a transport, so you get separated for a while.

You go into sword base, down to Halsey's lab, and instead of giving you a Cortana subroutine, she just gives you the data she's gathered on the forerunner artifact and you're to get it to the Pillar of Autumn WHICH IS IN ORBIT. lol. The masses of covenant ships overhead has made it impossible to transmit the data and there is too high a risk that it would be intercepted.

You leave halsey's lab to meet the marines with a couple passenger warthogs. You order them to go with Dr. Halsey instead of Jun. You part your separate ways. The marines salute you on their way. You and the remains of Noble team then begin your treacherous and epic race to a space port. As you're driving, Emile, and Jun are fending off pursuing banshees and ghosts while the whole planet is being glassed around you. I think this would be a way more epic driving level than the mongoose one we got in reach. I'm thinkin' Jun and Carter both get picked off en route.

You make it to the spaceport, you run to a Pelican that has a few troops on it. They're prepping the ship, but time is short. Emile stays back to give you a fighting chance. The pilot takes off and on your way, the ship is attacked by banshees and seraphs, the ship is in bad shape. The weapons are off line, you're out of ammo and there is still one banshee in pursuit. You're out of options. you tell the troops onboard to either go to the cockpit or but on vacuum gear and brace themselves. You take the data to the pilot and tell them that it is imperative to get it to keyes.

You open the bay door, just then it fires a banshee bomb toward the pelican. you jump out and fly like a bullet toward the banshee. you overcharge your sheild, and take the plasma blast, but your shields are gone. You continue toward the banshee at breakneck speed. From the closing hatch of the pelican, you see the banshee explode as if hit by a small, spartan-sized mac round.

The end is the pilot giving the data to keyes and him giving it to Cortana. The chief would be there too, just getting into cryo as they're about to jump.

This would all be over the period of like 5 days. The first 3 days would be the fight against the hidden recon group. Its believable that the force was small enough to be on reach without anyone, including Gamma station knowing about it.

The secon 2 days would be after the rest of the fleet showed up. I know its not the 1 day in which reach fell, but its a whole hell of a lot better than the month in the game.

I know its a really long read, but hope you enjoyed it. Tell me what you think, make your own alternate Reach story, or if you didn't read it, just answer the first question. Thanks.

You should make that into an alternate reality Halo book, with 343's approval of course, and become a best-seller. Your story is badass, I want it to be real!

i have thought it should be something along these lines. really all of the canon breaks could have easily been avoided. also something you didnt mention, they should change the ages of noble team.

Why would they change them? They fit perfectly with the timeline of the Companies.

Life's a game. How do you play?

I am completely with you on this one, man. You should appeal this to be made into an alternate-universe DLC, like LucasArts' The Force Unleashed Sith content (man, I never quite got over the feeling on whaling on Luke and making him feel like the pansy he is. Also, killing Darth Vader was cool trick). I'm pretty sure we could come up with a better ending though - I got two ideas, one consisting of him pulling off a Star War Episode 6 maneuver, crashing himself into a Covenant carrier in order to save the Autumn, the other being him turning himself into an actual MAC round inside the cannon (the backstory consisting of the ship firing him being out of MAC ammo or about to be destroyed) and taking out the same carrier. Both of these would make an awesome ending shot, and a floating helmet in space with a reflection of the blasted remains of Reach in it would bake a much cooler opener.

no not at all carter was born in 2520 and was recruited into alpha company in 2531 making him 11. spartan IIIs were 4-6 when recruited. kat wasnt to for off. she was born in 2530 and beta company was formed in 2537. jun was also 1 yr to old he was born in 2524 and was apart of alpha company. Emile was born in 2523 and apart of Alpha company. Again spartan IIIs were recruited at the age of 4-6, Alpha company was formed in 2531 and Beta in 2537.

I keep remembering that in GoO, the augmentation techniques were far better than what the S-IIs had. Perhaps they could be more liberal with who they took. Maybe they saw Carter had all the prerequisites needed and took a chance on him. It isn't hard to speculate, that is where the fun is.

but then carter would have been 17 or 18 when he was augmented and then it would not work because it needed to be before puberty or very early on.

I will say this for the OP.

You have more brains than the entire story writing staff at Bungie did.

But...the last part...make my own Reach Alternate story?

I got a good one.

The game starts the same, going to the relay. However...instead of walking there...you just fly the Falcon there and save a good 30 minutes of pointless mission and DVD space. So you get to the relay, kill some Zealots, and things progress.

Now...in the following Cinematic, I would change the dialog. This is how it would go.

Carter: Kat...status report...
Kat: You are in my light Commander...

*Carter smacks Kat in the back of the head*

Carter: Did I ask for smart comments? No...I think asked for a status report! Jorge!? What did I ask for!?

Jorge: A Status report...

Carter: Noble Six? What did I ask for?

Noble Six:...

Carter: That's right! Say nothing...you know nothing anyway!

*Noble Six nods*

Carter: Now...Kat...I will stand where ever I see fit, so I can supervise your work! Now...I ask again...STATUS...REPORT!!!

and stuff goes on, Kat learning the chain of command in the process.

---

They go to Sword base. Instead of sending...two Spartans...ALL of Noble team goes. They activate the AA gun and the comms array and they go back to sword base, and they kill the phantom, and then go to talk with Halsey.

Now...I would change more dialog.

Jorge: Hi Halsey...

Halsey: Jorge...you have modified military grade equipment without authorization.

Jorge: But...

Halsey: No buts...take it off. You are a Spartan II...not one of these dork Spartan IIIs that wear multicolored armor.

*Jorge leaves and puts on REAL Mjolnir Mark V*

Halsey: As for the rest of you...pick a single color and act like a squad. You look like clowns...with all this...multicolored armor...and mix-and-match parts. God...you people suck. Give me the latchkey research and get out of my face!

---

Nightfall mission is the same, except ALL of Noble team goes.

---

Tip of the Spear...that can be skipped because that was a pretty pointless mission.

---

Long Night of Solace...the first half can be skipped. These are Spartans...not Starfox and friends. All of Noble Team gets on a Pelican, flies to the Savanna, and they board the Corvette, and carry out the same plan of the slipspace bomb.

The end cinematic would change.

Jorge: We have bad news. The remote activation thing is damaged. Someone needs to stay behind to activate it.

Jorge looks at a nameless army guy standing in the corner.

Jorge: Private Replaceable....come here for a moment!

Soldier: Private Douglas Replaceable...reporting for duty!

Jorge: Private...I am a Spartan...I am rare, and I cost as much as a small battleship. You, on the other hand, have no family, no loved ones, and your death means nothing. Stay behind and activate this bomb while all the Spartans escape to safety.

Soldier: But sir...

Jorge: Shhh...I am your superior office...and sometimes, when in a position of command, you need to order someone to their death.

---

So far...all of our Spartans are alive and well...

---

So all of Noble Team goes to New Alexandria and do stuff. No major changes through the missions of Exodus.

---

No mission changes in New Alexandria. However...I would change the end cinematic.

*Kat get's shot in the head*

Carter: Leave her you fools! She can serve as food for the brutes to slow them down!

Emile: Good idea boss!

Jorge: Yeah...good idea

Jun: My cooking!

---

The Package changes a bit. You go to the ice cave, find Halsey, but there is no Cortana. Cortana is on the PoA. Your mission is to escort Halsey to safety. Done and done.

At the end of the mission, Noble Team splits up. Jun goes with Halsey somewhere and Jorge, Carter, Emile, and Six decided to try and get to the PoA to help Keyes.

---

The Pillar of Autumn mission starts and you fly the Pelican right to the PoA docking area, but you get shot down by a Phantom just short of your destination. A console explodes in Carters face killing him.

So Emile, Jorge, and Six all try to make a run for it, but they meet a Scarab. Emile gets disintegrated by the Scarab beam and Jorge and Six manage to defeat the Scarab by climbing on some rocks, boarding the Scarab by force, and overloading the core.

So Six and Jorge run to the boneyard, where a Pelican is waiting for them. As they near the Pelican, Several Zealots appear and ambush Six and Jorge.

Jorge is killed in the battle with the Zealots and Six gets wounded.

As Six crawls to the pelican...for dear life...a CCS class cruiser appears in the sky. It begins to charges its laser.

Keyes, being a Captain, understands the concept of "acceptable tactical losses given the circumstance" and he abandons Six and the rescue pelican and escapes Reach.

Six and the Rescue pelican are glassed and killed.

The end.

I couldn't stop laughing, although there are plenty of flaws in this. Carter is not that type of person who would react that way, and it wasn't a smart remake, she was being serious, although this breaks canon as Spartans have a natural night vision and her own built in Night Vision in her helmet, it was so pointless to even have that conflict both In game and in Canon. Oh and by the way, Noble 6 speaks, lol.

The Sword base thing is different, listen to the cutscene "Noble 6 and Kat your out here, Emile and Jorge your next."

Meaning that they all went as teams of 2 assuming Carter went with Jun.

Nightfall is different, do you understand the term "recon team"? It's very big and consists of a team going in loud, it's a small duo of Snipers that try to find out what the Covenant are up to.

Tip of the Spear was essential due to the fact that the Covenant set up a base on the UNSC's biggest military base, what do you expect?

Long night of Solace is something else, Jorge wanted to die, he though he was saving the planet, he was just getting old and wanted to save his home world, I'd do the same.

Lol, I just laughed again, Carter loved Kat, I understand that you probably changed the personalities of them but Spartans are Spartans, care for everyone and must retrieve the body of the dead.

The rest I love.

I agree with everything else you said, Although in the actual game, I don't see why the Pelican didn't go back to retrieve six after the Cruiser was taken down, they had nothing in their way at that time, wtf?

I agree with you, man, but its one thing to take a story in a direction the fans don't approve of. Its another thing to create an expansive and rich backstory, then changing it.

I have the utmost respect for Bungie and 343. But I just think they could have tried a little bit harder to keep to the story that the true fans came to love. We all felt betrayed when they just up and changed it.

But I do see where you're coming from. And this was just me getting my ideas out in the open, that's all. I'm not trying to "make canon".

No, making it a week would not change the canon complaints.

I like: the game ending at a space port. In space.

I don't like: the Chief being present.

You could still end it the H:R way instead of the way you did it. Just have six go down the spaceport's space elevator and fight around on the ground until dead.

Yeah that would have been cool. I was thinking it would be cool to see more of the orbital elevator and see it working.

Or better yet, you could travel up the elevator to deliver the data to a docked spacecraft and you watch the planet get destroyed as you go. Kind of like a playable cinematic. Then when you get to the top, you hand whoever is there to meet you the data, and just then, the platform gets hit and there is fire coming down the corridor, and you, knowing the data is more important, just close the door, saving the person you gave it to as well as the data.

I know. In all honesty, I never liked TFoR because it seemed to me that it didn't have a realistic time frame for how long it took to conquer Reach, the Fortress among the stars. I just took the canon change in stride because I just wanted to play a game, I don't care that it had plot holes. Besides, some of it does fit to canon.

[Edited on 03.11.2011 12:33 PM PST]

Oh yeah, no doubt. I loved the game as a game by itself.

But I rather liked the time frame of TFoR. It just showed the true destructive power of the Covenant. It gave you the impression that there was almost no more hope for humanity. I mean this was Reach. The "Fortress Among The Stars". And it fell in 1 day. it just put it into perspective. But yeah, I'm not bitter about the game. I just think they could have tried a bit harder to cater to both stories.

This is a very good story.

Thanks, Crook.

The thing is that Bungie did make the story of the novel. They wrote the Halo Bible, then handed it to the authors of the books. that way they could be true to canon and stray from bad continuity.

I know a lot of people say Bungie makes the decisions on where the story goes, not the authors. And that is the truth. But it was Bungie that made the story of the novel in the first place. And they're also the ones that changed it. I love Bungie. I love their games. and I could never make a universe as wonderful as theirs. I just wish they would have kept to the story they started with, that's all. But what's done is done. lol.
