Subject: Reason for Bungie Design Decision?

I'm 23, I have a house, dog, girlfriend, job and I have no interest in any fanboyism so if you're thinking about sending me a childish PM, don't be surprised when I don't call back.

We've all seen This picture.

Well that's what I wanna talk about, the way the Marines have transformed since Halo:CE. When Halo first started the Marines had big pieces of bulky sci-fi looking armour and big guns, the look was right because we are shooting aliens at the end of the day.

Then during Halo 2 Bungie had some kind of realism obsession and they replaced all of the armour and weapons with stuff that looked more like present day kit than anything you would see in a sci-fi game set 500 years in the future.

Then during Halo 3 it seemed as though Bungie had gone for a 50/50 look where the Marines looked a bit futuristic but also retained the more realistic feel at the same time.

In Reach it's a whole lot more apparent because you spend a lot of the game seeing Marines alongside Spartans and seeing a massive Cyborg stood next to a Trooper that wouldn't look out of place in Afghanistan is really odd sometimes. I can't decide which look more out of place now, the troopers or the Spartans.

So that's the discussion, why do you think Bungie went so far from their original concept? And are you happy with the way the style has gone?

"Dude, what are you doing right now?"
"Uhh... Heh, my mom."
"Dude... What?"

I think they were fine with Halo 2's marines.

In Reach they were Solders (Army), not Marines (Navy). They have different equipment. Simple explanation.

I recognise that and made a note of it in the OP, I'm talking about the marine design across every halo game.

I must have missed your note (Edit: I don't see what you are talking about, maybe I'm just to tired to be posting).

Think of it this way then. As humanity fought the covenant, they found more effective methods of protecting ground troops. All Military's strive for lighter and stronger armor. Once the events of Halo had occurred, MJOLNIR Mark VI was rolled out. Perhaps a different design of infantry armor was put out around the same time?

I don't see them going too far from their original design. It feels like more of a natural evolution to me. I do factor in advances in game engine and hardware though.

Vengeance only leads to an ongoing cycle of hatred.

They should have made them look like the Halo Wars soldiers. I mean, honestly, have you seen them? They look badass.

Remember the timeline, the Halo trilogy took place over a couple months, not even close to the time required to deploy one armor overhaul, let alone two.

OP: The actual CE Marine looks like a man in a grey jumpsuit with steel plates strapped on. The Halo 2 and 3 Marines look pretty good, kind of modern, but that helps the player feel more of a connection to Humanity (like the modern looking weapons). The Reach Marine is goofy looking once you realize that he has pieces of MJOLNIR armor.

I guess we can just add that to the list of inconsistencies.

This! I really agree with your opinion! :D

Just to point out, I'm not talking about the "gameplay-marines". I'm talking about the ones in the cutscenes. It was such an awesome mixture of early designs. Like taking the halo 3 marine-armor, the marine-helmet from CE and then improving every aspect of it!

Marines show up twice. In the space part of LNOS, and everywhere in PoA past the boneyard section.

Though, in CE it looked like they had just pieces of metal for armor, nothing really 'high tech'.

Don't worry, you're still your mom's favorite Bnet member.

I miss the Halo 1 marines. But Keyes' marines at the end came pretty close.

That is a point, but I'm not talking about the Marines getting a visual touch up. The design of the equipment changed drastically and there was never really a given reason for it.

I'll use an example:

Halo:CE Mark V
Halo 3 Mark V
Halo Reach Mark V

If you look at those helmets you can see clear evidence of a graphical boost between each game but with the Marines:

Halo:CE Marines
Halo 2 Marines
Halo 3 Marines

It is as if Bungie have completely changed them each time and they changed them completely again with Reach. Obviously in Reach they are supposed to be Army troopers but where is the explanation of what happened during the trilogy.

There are also only a few months in the timeline so there is no way they would have been re-outfitted twice in that time.

It could be possible that the Marines aboard Halcyon cruisers (or maybe just the Autumn) were given different armor for whatever reason. It's equally possible that only marines on Earth wore the Halo 2/3 armor.

Reach army troopers and marines aren't wearing MJOLNIR. The helms and the one shoulder-pad simply have a variant that was made for the MJOLNIR armor suit.

Simple way to tell between army troopers and marines. Marines will always have their helms with the facemask on (Like the Spartan helm), only with clear visors. Army Troopers will not have that piece.

Just like Sangheili fleet armor.

Eh... not really =(

Their weapons are of the wrong models, too.

From what I can see, most of their gear differs from the Army troopers... Helm is same base, but different model.

That's because you fight alongside them, and if they had a MA5B, you would be able to pick it up.

1) It's not the helm that every CE marine used.

2) Gameplay reason :/

I put the laughter in manslaughter

graphic limitations... and change of view, a game thats supposed to be about the fall of humanity doesnt do very well when the humans look like terminators.

The person who said participating is important, not winning, obviously never won anything.

The ODST's design is the best in all of Halo for me. They looked amazing in Halo 2.

  • 03.11.2011 12:01 PM PDT

The Halo 1 Marine was definitely the most impressive, in terms of its relation to the science-fiction grounding of the Halo universe. With both Halo 2 and Halo 3, Bungie's attempts to redesign the core concept and introduce a sort of Vietnam tone to the Marine's equipment and armour felt somewhat unnecessary. With Halo: Reach, Bungie harkened back to the original Halo 1 design, and it looks very good.
