If bungie is making a space MMO i know they said they weren't but if they were to save disk space especially for a console they could borrow a page from assassins creed. When your loading up in the animus and you can endlessly run around as Desmond in a white space of nothing bungie could use this but instead of it being white lines it could be space. This would mean although you are technically going nowhere a massive amount of disk space is saved instead of mapping out every individual piece of space. Objects such as planets which are in fixed positions in the online world can be tracked distance wise relevant to the player meaning if a planet is a certain distance away from the planet it is loaded into the game, once the load is complete the player will then be able to see the planet as a small dot in the horizon. The player will not recognise the load and it creates a massive if not endless amount of play space. To keep things interesting you could obviously load in enemies at times or whatever else to keep the gameplay fun like deserted ships to explore and asteroids on a collision course ect. This idea can of course only really be used in space as there is no real detail to go into the surrounds apart from dust clouds and stars however the idea might be able to be used for water to endless sail on until you reach some land. Just an idea i had don't know if anybody has ever done this in practical terms or implemented it in a game. I think this would create some awesome space battles and exploration on a console! XD

if anyones heard of EVE online... thats the best system i can think of for an mmo in space with realistic distance.

Does it use my idea? Id be dead upset if it did i thought i was being all clever with an awesome new idea :p but i think theres a gap in the market for that kind of thing on a console especially a cross between first person shooter while exploring your own ship (or infiltrating others), planets and other stuff like combat and then 3rd person space battles XD

im not sure of the system EVE uses, but a single solar system can take days to cross unless you're using a warp engine, and there are hundreds of solar systems... its a massive massive world and every player is on the same server, so what they're doing is pretty unique.
there is also a half life 2 mod that is based off of ship to ship combat in space the concept is good but the gameplay lacked and it died a while back.

I love EVE. and yes, you don't realize how much space you are flying through to get to the locations in that game, but it's huge.

I think this cold work. They could use actually space as a sort of medium for the players to be in, and then have objects fixed at a point as you said. This way things wouldn't have to be loaded, they'd already be there.

The only problem I see is how would pvp space battles work? They would be spontaneous and would require data such as gun damage, shields, etc. to be loaded in random space.

All the players would be tracked on the servers like any other game as soon as they enter close to other players relevant to the world then they could fight each other there would still be a set world just the bit in between wouldn't need to be mapped out and loose disk space.

but to keep things consistent, wouldn't the servers have to make that world visible to the other players, and open to them, too? You can't just have two people disappear , and then have one pop back into existence later.

They wouldn't just appear in front of your eyes like HELLO like i said earlier there loaded into the game far away enough so you might not even see them but if they get close to you, you would begin to see them. you have a valid point on the consistency of the visible game world but everyones game is the same its just that bit in between the planets and what not that would be randomly generated thats only going to be black space with stars twinkling away in the distance this doesn't need to be the same for either player there ship would still be the same wherever it is nothing else would be effected in any way. As you got closer to a landmark such as a meteor belt or space station with recognisable landmarks this would be the same for each player its just like covering the players surroundings in what seems like a moving picture and would simulate the movement of the player through it surroundings relevant to key fixed objects i the world.

Nooooooo how irritating just saw a video on IGN for a version of EVE were you can physically go on planets and attack them and board each others ships well thats what it looked like. I had high hopes for my idea ahh well at least its actually come true :(
