I loved the campaign in Reach. It's a fabulous story. The characters were extremely well developed and it portrayed the desperation of the planet.
What people don't like is that Reach's story, as great as it may be, stepped on the feet of the already established backstory.
I hated the story for the reason you listed AND because the characters were boring an uninteresting. They died too easily, they never really devoloped, only one of them showed any emotion (Jorge) and Kat's death did not have a single effect on Carter at all.
I could seriously rant all day on how much of a pile of crap the story was in both canon consistancy and character devolopment, but I don't have the time. Besides, I already wrote a review and posted it here, I'm not doing that again.
The only thing I like about it was the dark and depressing feel you got at the end.
You do realize a good commander should never show too much emotion about a loss?
And since they're Spartans, which don't have much emotion in the first place, then that makes perfect sense.
1) You know a good character needs to show some emotion, right?
2) This is a paraphrased quote from the Gaminformer, by Brian Jarrard, that first revealed Reach gameplay:
"This is a character driven story about Spartans. We're showing a more personal side. They're not unbreakable: they're still human."
When I read that and saw the Deliver Hope trailer later, I was ready for a heavily emotion charged game. I instead got a dumb action movie that sh1ts all over the established Halo lore.
Bungie consistintly told us that this was a character driven story akin to the 7 Samauri and Titanic. It was not in ANY way.
If you really want to know what I thought of Reach, read this
Its a comparison of Reach's story and characters, and ODSTs. As you'll notice, I like ODST's story and characters a lot more.
