At the end of Halo 3, the Arbiter escapes back to Earth, and the Master Chief is drifting to an unknown planet.
If my theory about the Halo universe is correct, the Master Chief's and Cortana's destination was deliberate, and the Arbiter's destination was accidental.
Cortana, since her studies of the artefacts on Reach, has given her knowledge of most Forerunner artefacts, including the Halos and Forerunner planets. She doesn't disclose any of her knowledge, about the forerunners, unless absolutely necessary. This is to prevent further catastrophes from occurring. Since Forerunner artefacts are sources of power that for the most part are still a mystery to their known science.
The covenant were proof that such technology couldn't be trusted in the hand of 'lesser' beings.
The Pillar of Autumns escape from Reach (from the Covenant) leads them to the Halo ring. This was because Cortana knew that whatever could end the Covenant-Human war, could only be discovered on the Halo ring.
It was just unfortunate that the Covenant (having superior technology) beat them to it. This leads us to the events in Halo 1-2-3.
At the end of Halo 3, again, Cortana makes a mad dash for escape. Again, there is reason behind her actions. I don't believe the war against the Flood is over. Now that the Ark has been destroyed, the galaxy has no defence against the Flood (the Halo rings). So if there were to be another outbreak, the galaxies only hopes would lie in the Forerunner home world?
This is why I believe Cortana has taken the ship there. Only, unfortunately the slipspace portal collapses, sending part of the ship toward the unknown planet, and the other of Earth. I theorise this is because since that journey had already been made through slipspace (Earth-The Ark), anything travelling through slipspace from the Ark without navigational control would simply fall through a previous made slipspace path.
The only way Cortana can make contact with Earth is if she reinitialises all Forerunner artefacts.
How's this theory looking? I may have overlooked a few things.
