They played a very major role in Halo 2 and 3 and also sort of began the Human-Covenant War. Would would have happened if they just weren't there?

  • 03.11.2011 9:01 PM PDT

-blam!- Was that actually blammed out? Or did I just type it? You'll never know.

Well the Covenant would have remained intact without the Elites splitting off and none of the events after Halo: CE would have been the same. Humanity may very well have lost the war without the Elites on their side.

The franchise would have sucked without them.

*scratches nuts*

Story-wise, everything would turn to crap.

Gameplay-wise, the games would be much better, Brutes are horrible enemies to fight.

I personally think Elites are horrible to fight.

They are boring and totally not interesting. It's like fighting cardboard.

The Brutes are entertaining enemies.

Man is born free but everywhere he is in chains.

The Elites would have stayed with the Prophets, and humanity would be screwed.

Plus, no Uprising mission on Halo 2!! A very dark alternate universe indeed.

SHUT THE -blam!- UP BRUTES SUCK

What we have here...is a typical troll who loves Elites and hates on Brutes

Notice the low IQ, and the full caps-lock.

This behavior is indicative of an Elite fan...someone who is such a xenophile for Elites, he/she will descend into a fit of madness over any comment insulting the object of their personal desires.

  • 03.11.2011 10:18 PM PDT

Would have loved the Covenant 10x more. I like the Brutes, but they ruined the Elites. Elites would have destroyed the Humans with ease. Elites beat Brutes in almost every way aside from hand to hand. Elite Shipmasters know how to keep ships intact unlike Brutes(Contact Harvest Reference). The war would also have ended earlier.

Isn't there a Brute thread to discuss this stuff?

  • 03.11.2011 10:49 PM PDT

I like to play Devil's Advocate

Well, gameplay wise

Fighting elites would grow stale, they would lose all their Bamf.

Brute mixed things up in Halo 2, their fighting style was vastly different than elites.

The story would be weaker too...without the Schism, I doubt people would be as "sympathetic" towards elites as they are now...

Like this guy

and yet halo CE, which had no brutes, is widely regarded as the best campaign in the series....

  • 03.12.2011 1:01 AM PDT

Its hard to say if the schism would still have happened if the brutes hadnt taken the place of the elites. Part of the reason the elites rebelled was because the brutes took their jobs.

While the evidence proposed by the monitor, the flood, and humanity was compelling, would it be enough to incite such a thing? Would the prophets have betrayed the elites if they didnt have the monkey men to protect them?

who knows.

See, to me (and by the sounds of it, most people), it's the other way around.

The Brutes are the roaring, flailing bullet sponges who charge in a straight line, or jump through the air, ignoring cover.
The Elites, on the other hand, utilise the environment, the ability to move in at least two dimensions (front/back AND side-to-side, unlike Brutes who lack the latter) and their troops to soften up enemy positions.

Elites are warriors, and are a great joy to fight, for the slight challenge mixed with the feeling of "Oh, I see what you did there" that you really only get in Chess or euphemisms.
Brutes simply lack that. Brutes feel repetitive. You see a Brute, you run backwards and shoot. They'll do nothing to stop you, but charge.

While that guy is immature and comes off as a -blam!-, you too have your own bias. You compared Elites to cardboard, if you don't recall, and when someone decided to counter your argument (albeit immaturely) you resorted to insulting the IQ's of Elite fans. Not a good strategy if you're trying to prove that Brutes are better.

On topic: If Brutes were gone then Halo's story would not be as compelling as it is, especially not Halo 3, in which you could feel the tension between the two species at war.

The Elites were much harder to fight in the games. Brutes were very easy compared to them.

  • 03.12.2011 6:09 AM PDT

Forklifts never die. They're just missing in Forge.

Well, the gameplay would be a little stale, I like the variety the Brutes bring.

But, if there were no Brutes, there would be story. The Brutes picked up Dadab and Lighter than Some, the two survivors of the first battle between humans and the Covenant. If those two were not picked up, they would have died in space, no one in the Covenant would know about the humans.

Then again, the Covenant may have eventually found the humans. There will still be no Schism, and the Elites would still be with the Covenant. It may also mean that the Covenant would have won the war, seeing as the Elites helped us.

So what if you can see the darkest side of me?

I didn't much see the Brutes as a radical change in gameplay after Halo 2--which had the bullet sponge thing to them--and I saw very little point in implicating them if they didn't change the gameplay all that much.

For example, Minor Elites, especially in Halo: CE, would "beserk" if you got their shields down due to their culture of "blood is their honour and losing blood is to lose one's honour" so to regain their honour, they went suicidal.

Brutes, when introduced, weren't only bullet sponges but did the same thing, just without the same justification. They beserked if a pack member was killed due to their close bond yet they also randomly beserked if their armour/shield was depleted, although having no logic for this except for possible anger.

Other than the new weapons that came with the Brutes (Brute shots, Spikers, etc), I really saw little change. Especially when the power armour in Halo 3 and the shields in Halo 3: ODST acted like the Elite shields in the first place.

Wake me when the jews are gone.

story-wise there wouldn't be any war because without the brutes the Human-Covenant war would have never started

That's like.......the polar opposite of how everyone else on planet earth seems to see the Brutes and Elites.

Brutes in Halo 3 were mindless apes with nail rifles. Same in Halo 2, but with plasma rifles. Elites have always been quick, highly intelligent, and devestating enemies. In fact, this design difference is the intended difference. Brutes are animals, Elites warriors.

I'd take a Zealot over five Brutes any day.

  • 03.12.2011 7:04 AM PDT

Am I supposed to write something funny here?

I'd say that elites would have realised that it was humans that showed up on luminary. Can't say what would have happened after that.

Halo 2

Elites: They strafe, and you have to remove their shields and then get lucky and kill them. Once in combat they tended to be slightly hard to hit.

Brutes: You pull out needler, and brute resistance is gone.

  • 03.12.2011 8:04 AM PDT

Than Halo 2's campaign would have no meaning, and in H3, we would still be fighting the Elites.
