Subject: The Skirmishers in Canon

I for one have not read the slightest information on Skirmishers in any of the books. According to Canon, they never existed right? Or were they all exterminated on Reach? I'd help if this was clarified.

I'm sure Bungie put them in the game to give a bigger diversity for the Kig Yar although why were they not mentioned in the books? Weren't thought of yet?

According to Halo Wiki...

They saw extensive action during the Fall of Reach, and as a result of catastrophically high casualties the Skirmisher ranks were utterly exhausted and the Skirmishers themselves nearly wiped out.

Seriously? They have apparently been used prior to 2530 but have no mention in any of the books, what gives?

This is one thing I hate about Reach.

Bungie has time to make a whole new breed of Skimisher...but they couldn't finish the brutes on time.

But that's off topic.

But yes...according to Bungie...every Skirmisher in the galaxy died on Reach. A wizard must of moved all the skirmishers to Reach...

That's it...a wizard did it.

Actually, according to Bungie, the military might of the Skirmishers was wiped out. Aka, nearly all of their fighting force was killed, but the race was not.

Their species is still around, The Kig-Yar.

Yes...my apologies.

I intended to say Jackal as opposed to Skirmisher the first time.

  • 03.11.2011 11:50 PM PDT

maybe they were special operations, so only used rarely and in sleuth missions. That seems the most probable, for example winter contencincy. (sorry about spelling) they were used a lot in reach probably because humans put up a pretty big fight, so the covenant needed every soldier they could get

That makes no sense. Jackal's and Skirmisher's only relate because they come from the same place and have the same type of anatomy, they are only far cousins.

Spartans never die... they just revert to last checkpoint.

You people are thinking too hard. It's a video game. They added it in. If they were to remake Halo 1, 2, 3, ODST or Halo Wars, Skirmishers would be included. Just pretend they've always been there.

This. Same had to be done with the Brutes in Halo 2.

Ah, but they're still Kig-Yar.

Albeit, different ("far cousin") races of Kig-Yar, but Kig-Yar nonetheless.

Anyway, I'm just going to say that Skirmishers are a great example of "Gameplay > Canon".
They're there as a challenge, a change of pace... I don't think they are meant to canonically fit.

They're a different sub-species i think. Same species. That means they can breed with eachother and are very similar but have key differences.

Pretend they've always been there. Always.

A common mistake is the belief that Reach broke canon.

It didn't.

It simply edited the canon to fit the needs.

Weren't the black jackals in Halo CE meant to be skirmishes? :S

  • 03.12.2011 4:28 AM PDT

Spartans never die... they just revert to last checkpoint.

The Revenant wasn't in other games and I don't see people tryin to fit that into the canon.

Pretend it was always there.

The Grunt Permutations were shown only with colors but nobody question the shiny white grunts that popped up outta nowhere.

But it made sense for the Jiralhanae not being in Halo CE. The Fleet of Particular Justice was led by Thel, he had his army comprised of Sangheili, Unggoy, Lekgolo and Kig-Yar, not Brutes.

  • 03.12.2011 4:36 AM PDT

Reach introduced them, just like they introduced albino Brutes.

  • 03.12.2011 8:29 AM PDT

FoR mentions nothing but Jackals and Grunts. All other stories are isolated incidents, not general views about the situation.

Skirmishers being in Reach but not in previous canon material is the same situation as Brutes appearing in Halo 2. Just because we didn't see them before this does not mean that they did not exist. Lack of appearance =/= non-existence.

High casualties?

They seem quite effective to me.

They even had power armor.

  • 03.12.2011 9:06 AM PDT

I do remember killing a lot of them in the campaign.

It irritates me that Bungie told us that we would find out why the Skirmishers do not appear anywhere else in the Universe, yet absolutely no mention of it was ever made in the game.
