Subject: Why does the Japanese hate Halo?

Honestly, since Halo CE, the Japanese didn't seem to have much interest with Halo judging by sales and poor ratings. I ask you, the community, why do you think so? What is it that they don't like about it?

Halo CE - Hated it
Halo 2 - Hated it
Halo 3 - Hated it
Halo Wars - Hated it
Halo 3: ODST - Hated it
Halo: Reach - Hated it

Why?

Cultural thing. Games featuring super macho protagonists tend to do well in the West, but poorly in Japan. This has led to some humorous consequences in the marketing department: see box art differences. My favorite is the one where they make Kirby look angry by changing his eye shape.

I wonder what they put for Reach...

Interested read, thanks for posting.

Also, true to the fact that it's a cultural thing. The japanese prefer the RTS or RPGs compared to the west in which the FPS genre is the dominant genre racking in millions of $. It's just, our taste in gaming evolved differently. I'm not trying to generalise here but I think it's safe to say that other asian countries prefer the RTS' and the RPGs compared to the FPS genre. See south korea for example, in their love for say, Starcraft, compared to in the west theres Halo and CoD.

Also, this was awhile ago for the Halo 3 promotion in korea with a master chief standing in a mall. Linky.

It might be a cultural thing. But that's a huge generalisation to make, I have 5 friends on my FL who are Japanese who play Halo all the time.

Halo CE - Hated it

Halo 3: ODST - Hated it
Halo: Reach - Hated it

This is how I see it...Halo is missing some things that Japanese people NEED to survive.

-Flashing Lights all over the place
-Big mouths
-People who cry waterfalls of tears
-Spartans are not 30 ft robots
-Pokemon

I thank God Halo is not popular in Japan. The last thing I need is a Japanese-Halo with a Spartan with hair down to her feet that is a glowing purple color. She would be bouncing all over the place, and be doing ninja kicks against an Elite, while suspended in mid-air for a duration of time that makes the laws of Physics bite the pillow due to lack of lube.

Furthermore, Halo Legends came from Japan and we all saw the visual depictions there. Remember the female Elites? You will have female Brutes as well...who wants to teabag a female Brute? Not me...(at least not sober)

(But there are some people who teabag dead males so take your pick)

Besides...all of those Spartans are westernized. They don't have hello kitty on their armor. Wanna picture that?

Besides, I don't need Japanese animation turning all of the scary aliens into cuddly wuvables.

But these are my thoughts...

No wonder the Halo: Legends videos mostly sucked ass. I just watched them again and seriously thought about selling the DVD, even though I know I'll only get about $2.00 for it.

While many Japanese people may dislike Halo, one video game developer, Keiji Inafune, who created the Lost Planet series, did base it on Halo.

Keiji Inafune did admit that many people Japan have never heard of Halo, and so Lost Planet is in many ways, a way to convey the core science-fiction principles of a western audience, to a Japanese one.

Ok, that first part of your post is just racist and uncalled for stereotyping -.- The rest is just arrogant nonsense.

Halo Legends was superb, and this is coming from someone who is not particularly an anime/manga fan. I have small complaints yes, but nothing is perfect, and I do not expect things to be that way. Legends was quite excellent over all, and I'd love to see more Halo shorts, anime or western style.

And...HOW is it racist? Have you ever seen Japanese Spiderman? Peter Parker had a 30 ft Robot Spiderman. I have watched a lot of anime, although with much distaste, and I have seen people with these like...massive mouths, and they shoot water from their eyes like it was a water faucet.

How am I racist for making comparisons based on things that ACTUALLY do exist?

You are a stupid moron OderedComa. I hate to say it, but God made a mistake when he created you. Everything you nitpick on is based on pure illogic, and innuendo. You never offer anything substantive, and you dwell in a pool, a festering cauldron of pure fail. I did not say a single racist thing, yet you come in, and make blind accusations because I included elements of FACT into my post. What is wrong with you? Are you offended by the truth?

OrderedComa...you reduce the net intelligence of the human race. Go and crawl into a cave, and NEVER come out. Hopefully, if you are never seen again, humanity can progress without your dead-weight stupidity holding us back.

By the way, one of my friends lives in Japan. Before it was leveled by two Earthquakes, when he would walk the streets, he would observe that every second person had a Hello Kitty emblem somewhere on their body. So yeah...

Back on topic.

I personally find Japanese animation offensive to my sense of person. Halo legends, in particular "The babysitter", was the worst garbage I have ever seen in my life. That Spartan had like...pink hair. Was it a guy? Was it a woman? Gender ambiguity is like...a must have in Japanese animation.

Why was that Spartan so small? Assuming a Spartan height of 7'0" The Brute looked to be about 16 feet tall.

WHAT!?

That Brute certainly shops in the big and tall section.

Then that ODST...he looks like that kid from Pokemon.

ODST

Kid from Pokemon

I don't like it when shows get canceled...but...whatever boardroom executive canceled Halo Legends...that person is a national treasure.

Then...we have THIS abomination. This...insult...

Jesus...we are weak...we are fallible...compared to you, we are one-dimensional...is this why you have abandoned us?

Animation aside, I just think the mechanics of their plots and stories suck as well. Did anyone see how far that sniper bullet went in the last scene of The babysitter? I guess the Japanese don't know about the Coriolis effect.

The first section of your comment is completely racist. You talk about them needing all the stuff you mentioned for survival, and the general tone of your post is very condescending toward Japanese society, it also implied that you thought of Western animation being superior to anime, nothing wrong or racist with that, however acting like the Japanese are inferior for liking anime is completely and totally racist.

And you're not going to get a rise out of me by insulting my inteligence, all you're going to do is get a massive guffaw from me, I find the first half of this post completely laughable XD All you are doing is making yourself look stupid

You find Japanese animation offensive, so what? Don't like it? Don't watch it. No, Cal had pale, blonde hair, any "pink" or reddish tint to it was from the blood. And if you can't tell that was a girl then you seriously need to get your eyes checked or hang out with more girls. Cal was clearly a girl.

Again, wrong, the Spartan and the Brute were both about the right height, Brutes are about 9 feet tall, the Brute would stand about head and shoulders taller than Cal, which he does.

So what if O'Brien does look like the Pokemon Kid? And I see barely any resemblance at all, actually how are you even saying they resemble each other, there is none whatsoever.

I don't think Halo Legends was canceled at all, as far as I know it was just meant to be a one-time thing that might be taken up again. I never heard anything about it being something that would be going on for multiple seasons and then got canceled.

SO what? I a heavily armed Mjolner prototype is all I see. And actually, if I remember hearing correctly, there is something that resembles it in Halsey's Journal.

I guess you can't take a joke or spoof story can you? That's what Odd One Out is, none of it is meant to be taken seriously, haha hell, even the name suggests that. Odd One Out is a spoof of both Halo and anime in general.

Um, nothing at all wrong with the distance at all, I've seen movies with snipers at that distance taking out their target, I don't think you even know what you're talking about.

  • 03.14.2011 1:05 PM PDT

Add in that the sniper rifle automatically compensates fro the Coriolis effect from what I've read.

  • 03.14.2011 1:09 PM PDT

Good point (especially the bit about Kirby).
I'm sure if Master Chief was a teenage student with long hair and was too smart for school he'd be more popular in Japan.

Right, there is about a million things wrong with this fail of a post you have accumulated. *cracks knuckles*
1) Japanese anime is Art. Apologies if it is a little too intelligent for you to understand but that is art for you.

2) Calm the hell down. Ordered coma is only pointing out something that is true. What you have said is basically pure racism. Then you have to go and spam total abuse at him for no particular reason. Seriously that had some venom in there.

3) I fail to see how Ash (btw) resembles that ODST in any way shape or form. Since when did red hair look like black hair?

4) Odd one out is not bloody canon for christ sake. Seriously even a brain dead nub could tell that. The spartans tag is 1337, there is a giant creature that can implode itself, and finally an AI looking after children. Hintedy hint hint.

Baby Sitter Brute

Sorry for the terrible clip, just mute your speakers. The music is kind of annoying but the images is what matters. That Brute is WAY bigger than 9 feet. That Spartans head is at belly level. In Halo 3...Spartans were a tad bit shorter than Brutes.

Just by looking at a picture...

That is pretty ambiguous

Knowing the Japanese, Dudes have long hair too. Also...check out that masculine jaw and that nose. It's bigger than that Pokemon ODST's nose. Cal is also a mans name. It is a Unisex name, so both guys and girls can have it.

I think you're stupid OrderedComa.

BTW...I know Odd One out is not Canon. The animation still sucks though. That is what Japanese artists do to American franchises. I was citing it as an example.

If odd One Out is indicative of SOME KIND of Japanese art...than that art should be destroyed.

you do realise that the people who made halo legends were working with 343 (i think, may of been another american company) they just did the art and came up with a few ideas, so in other words its not just the japanese but the americans fault, oh and it was not canceled they were only planning on doing it once not because they didn't want to invest further but because it was only a onc time thing.

Everybody loves Grunts!

I for one am not a fan of anime/manga, but you guys are giving Japanese videogaming/television a bad rap just for Halo Legends.

Sure Legends was bad, Halo doesn't really work as an anime, but that doesn't mean that the Japanese are horrible artists and cannot tell a story.

this, epic win, i completly agree, altough i did like halo legends, it combined my 2 fav things, anime and halo

and if you watch anime you will know that most anime's start of with not that good animation and get better as they go along while halo legends was a one tme thing where they were trying to expand on a story already made

I like to play Devil's Advocate

On Halo Legends, I personally thought it was nothing special.

Like Don't get me wrong....I do realize Legends was meant for a totally different audience...and I'm sure said audience would adore legends.

Origins I and II, loved it, ADORED it.

The Babysitter, UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.

That One Ash ODST.....is just a brat,Seriously, The Spartan saved his life THREE times! It's not until he finds out it has a -blam!-, that he respects it?

The Package, Nothing Special, until I saw this abomination, then I went to the hospital.

Odd One out, Nothing Special

Homecoming, Again, nothing Special

Prototype, Never got around to watch it, Maybe I missed the best Story, or maybe I lucked out, Who knows.

The Duel, Decent, until I saw this abomination

Also....Call me racist, But Naked Crook does have SOMETHING of a point when he says

And...HOW is it racist? Have you ever seen Japanese Spiderman? Peter Parker had a 30 ft Robot Spiderman. I have watched a lot of anime, although with much distaste, and I have seen people with these like...massive mouths.......

Just watch the Package....

Considering they were on an ONI Prowler, there wasn't room for a Sabre and I would bet a Longsword or Pelican would be too slow for what they were doing. The Booster Frames were exceptional at what they did and they worked.
