Subject: Why does the Japanese hate Halo?

Posted By: SoldierOfAthena
I could write a novel-length thread on all the canonical issues with Halo: Legends, not to mention things that just don't belong in a Halo Universe. It was freaking terrible.

Go ahead then bub, I can probably refute anything you dish out against Halo Legends. And I don't think the fanbase gets to decide what does or does not belong in Halo, that's Bungie or 343's job, not ours.

Popularity in Japan is a difficult thing to describe.

Most of the games and shows which are considered popular in Japan have been around much longer than anything in the rest of the world.
E.g. Gundam is still at the height of it's popularity after over 30 or so years, with consistent game, anime, manga, movie and toy releases.

Western games are fickle, once every now and then a Halo game is released, and the books and toys are just as infrequent.
There's no stability, and with each major release a marketing campaign is needed to bring it back to people's attention.

Not only that, but the Xbox doesn't have such a large fanbase there, not just because nintendo and sony were there first, but because they can't afford to give the Xbox the push everything else in Japan got when it started out.

But to be fair, Japanese people don't hate Halo, most of the people I've met don't even know what it is.

^This guy has it about right.

I guess they just don't have some of the same interests as we do.

No need to single them out. There are a lot of people who didn't enjoy the Halo games.

And so does this guy.

Perhaps I will when I have free time today. And I fully realize that they have the say in what goes in. Doesn't mean I have to like it.

Didact's Reprisal -
Now is the time of our unworlding
One final effort is all that remains
And I am not afraid
We shall fulfill our promise
We fight for the grace of the Mantle
And this time none of you will be left behind

I can cover Halo: CE, but I won't/can't answer the rest. It's due to the original xbox. It reportedly didn't sell well because of the Xbox's bulky nature. And if the console can't sell, then its games won't sell.

All right. No, it doesn't mean you have to like it, there are things I don't like in other pieces of the Halo fiction, but I still accept them, if only grudgingly. Like I think the books don't do justice to the UNSC military power and that the Covenant are portrayed way too powerfully, I still somewhat accept it however.

Maybe it's just me, but a lot of the players I play with are japanese and from Japan. Most of the time I get connected to Japanese people because of my location maybe.

The person who said participating is important, not winning, obviously never won anything.

FPS's arent as dominate in Japan as other genres like RTS's or RPG's.

Korea likes RTS' and MMO's, Japan likes Fighter's and RPG's.

On topic, Japan just doesn't enjoy shooters and they definitely don't enjoy western style games really at all. Just look at the difference between JRPG's and western RPG's (think Final Fantasy vs. Oblivion) and you will notice an entirely different taste.

Quite true.
At least in the States we get the option of trying both of them out. I wonder if Japanese gamers are as able to get their hands on Western RPGs as easily as Westerners can get their JRPGs.

When I grow up, I want to be just like goofenhour.

I don't think that they hate it, it's just not big in Japan. It's like any other small FPS that is made today in America.

Some liked it. Who do you think came up with Halo: Legends?

Haha yeah, I mean some of those anime executives have to like Halo at least somewhat if they make a story set in the universe XD
