Subject: Would you dare use the Warthog in Modern war?

I sure as hell wouldn't. Doesn't provide any over from the sides or overhead, is extremely light which causes it to flip very easily and wouldn't do very effective in a warzone. Overall it would be suicide if you ask me.

The Driver - Partial cover, no cover from the sides or overhead.
Passenger - Same deal as Driver although has no priority.
Gunner - No Cover aside from the front which is still minimal.

Weaponry - 1 12.7x99mm armor penetration gun turret

If I were to find one and tell two men from my platoon to join me, I would gladly be passenger.

So basically, would you use a Warthog in a Modern War? I wouldn't.

EDIT: Weight is debatable, it's 3.5 tons, yet it can flip easily?

EDIT 2: This DOES NOT include Gauss, Rocket, or Passenger variants.

Actually, in many current middle-eastern conflicts you see a plethora of what are known as 'technicals' - a truck (usually an old Toyota) with a machine gun mounted on it. These highly-mobile units are very effective in large numbers. The U.S. Army makes extensive use of Hummers, which are essentially the same idea but better-armored. It's true that warthogs leave the driver and especially the gunner fairly exposed, but with their decent armor, high maneuverability, and ability to carry very powerful weapons they are certainly useful in a variety of situations.

Similar to the ones in Black Hawk Down, right? Yes, those were effective, against ground units, we never got a good chance to see them fare against the Convoy.

Depends on who and what I am fighting. With many forces employing IED's to fight vehicles, I would most likely pass. It offers almost no protection against, well, anything. Don't forget that it is prone to rolling, making it a hazard to pilot at high speeds. Not ideal if you want your forces to survive.

Screw that, I'd rather take a smart car. The Warthog has literally no protection from oncoming fire; you're going to get dome rocked within a matter of seconds!

Inside another dead body. It's the last place they'll look
A corpse within a corpse.
CORPSEPTION.
Win.

Limited armour, none of which actually protects the occupants.
Operator of the primary weapon is horrifically exposed.
It is bizarre that it can flip so easily, it's as if the tyres are filled with helium.

I don't think I'd use any UNSC equipment, ever.

I just play for fun. MLG can kiss my ass.

Depends on the variant, I'd go with the Gauss hog.

Hell ya, the thing has freakin TITANIUM ARMOR man! and it has the engine of a super car, i think it would tear any resistance it has to pieces

Titanium ceramics are already the armour of choice in most composite armours.

It has an armoured floor. That is it. Not much use anyway when it's 3.5tons can be flipped so easily.

*KABOOM* IED explodes below hog.
Hog gains significant altitude, flips and ejects it's occupants who are all killed or injured. The unfortionate gunner is likely decapitated.
Former occupants are picked off by enemy small arms fire.

Warthog still remains an extremely fast and agile 4x4, far greater than a hummer. All you need to do is add proper doors on to the warthog, and some extended cover for the gunner, and you have already got a brilliant military vehicle.

I would use a warthog in open desert/fields where speed and menuverability is key to winning the battle.

Also, the warthog doesn't need refuelling (well, it doesn't need to be refuelled often)

You think the titanium a battle armour used on unsc ships is the same or slightly stronger then todays metals?
Wha have you been smoking?
It would wipe the floor with any metals today...

Old GTs; RebelRobot, Flamedude

The Warthog, although iconic, was designed from a gameplay perspective. Partially covered seats mean occupants are still susceptible to being shot, its all about balance man!

Besides the games, is they anything showing it would be flipped incredibly easy?

Oh, and I'd rather a gauss hog then other vehicles... Speed and firepower.

I would only use a Frigate or Cruiser. I love the design of Covie and UNSC space craft.

Don't bother. I am well aware of how and what makes modern armour. Titanium Battleplate shows similar properties to cutting edge titanium or tungsten nano armours currently in development. Used in a proper composite armour system it's well within our reach to make something that is as good, or better than what is seen in halo.

Add to the fact that the Assault Rifle, which is considered a threat in the haloverse only puts out twice the KE of a modern 7.62 NATO, the titanium armours used in halo are far from fantastic.

Warthogs aren't meant for modern warfare, their for fighting a completely different type of enemy. I.e. light anti armour aircraft. Cover isn't going to save you from a banshee bomb, but a larger area of sight so that you can take it down first, is. Plus cover is less necessery due to the amount of armour that marines wear.

Hell no

-blam!- Was that actually blammed out? Or did I just type it? You'll never know.

Of course! Come on people, live on the edge!

  • 03.14.2011 12:22 PM PDT

I'd say the warthog's defense is it's speed and maneuverability, not plain armor.

Ever hear of the M99 Stanchion Rifle? Its like a mini MAC. I'd sure as hell use that.

But the Whathog....maybe, if I was trying to be quick and agile.
