I'm not entirely sure where to put this thread, but seeing as The Library is about all things Halo on Xbox, and seeing that it is mostly fan-based, I thought some adamant fans or even some Bungie Staff might help me on this.

"The Fall of Reach" by Eric Nylund is about the years of the Master Cheif before the game Halo: Combat Evolved in the story sense. In one of the missions, as outlined in Chapter Twenty, the Master Cheif encountered a new creature:

"They were roughly man-sized creatures - unlike any he had ever encountered. The creatures were vaguely sluglike, with pale, purple-pink skin. Unlike other Covenant forces, they were not bipeds. Instead they had several tentacular apendages sprouting from their thick trunks.
They floated a half meter above the ground, as if the odd, pink bladders on their backs kept them aloft. One alien used a slender tentacle to open the hood of a car. It began to disassemble the car's electric engine, moving with startling speed.
Within twenty seconds all the parts had been arranged in rows.. Finally, the creature simply reassembled the car and floated on its way."

What in heck is it? Or is it something that Halo 3 (pretty please?) will reveal?

It is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press. It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech. It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, who has given us the freedom to demonstrate. It is the soldier, not the lawyer, who has given us the right to a fair trial. And it is the soldier who salutes the flag, who serves the flag, whose coffin is draped in the flag that allows the protester to burn the flag.Father Dennis Edward O'Brien, USMC

They are the nerds of the covenant army.

Yeah they can take apart and rebuild just about anything. They are completely harmless, or are they?

Everything will be gone long before me. When the first living thing was born, I was here, waiting. When the last living thing dies, my job is finished. I'll put the chairs on the tables, turn out the lights and lock the universe behind me when I leave.

drones, until Halo 2, are engineers too but they work on the outsides of Covenant Space Ships because their skin is vacuum tight, while the Engineers work on the inside of the ships with most likely MUCH better efficiency
