Subject: Humanity must have been really lazy for 500 years.

Lets look at the difference between society, technology and military 500 years ago.
...
Now lets look at the difference between society, technology and military between the Halo universe and now.
Sure, there are some pretty big inventions, like space craft, Biological super soilders and Laser based weapons.
But don't you think we would have achived alot more in 500 years if were at the constant development rate of the last 500 years?
Our technology would probably match that of the Covenents.

Has anyone else thought this? share your thoughts.
Sorry for any spelling or grammar mistakes.

The halo universe was created based off a game.

Not much else to say.

you don't think, flash cloning, augmented supersoldiers, space travel, colonization of countless planets, slipspace travel, the development of AI's capable of runnning full ships and learning the entire history of mankind in minutes is enough?

I think Humans were busy with the colonies.

This, their efforts went into economy, terraforming, colonization.

You know, saving the human race from destroying itself.

This video here, Is Dr. Michio Kaku. He is a jedi master.
In short hes talking about different types of possible civilisations type I type II and type III. We're type 0 cause we're poo. But he basicly goes on to say how it will take us maybe a hundred years to get to type I. Then a few hundred for Type II and a hell lot of thousend to get to type III.
so yeah, 500 years is maybe quite optimistic. But at the same time, Maybe its not. Depending on how quickly our civilisations continues to grow.
Okay, im gonna shut up now >_<

It isn't our shiznit anymore.

It probably had to do with the centuries of wars and a government controlled by the military don't give a very good environment for technological innovation.

  • 03.14.2011 11:15 AM PDT

there was many planetary war going on in during the 500 years

Think about this.

We are a unified culture after the rainforest/interplanetary wars. We have no enemies to fight. All of humanity is joined under the United Nations.

Why would we improve weaponry to fight an enemy that doesn't exist?

We focused on social expansion and colonization technologies, not military. The UNSC/CMA was more of a security force rather then a true military.

The UEG ran the show, really.

Man is born free but everywhere he is in chains.

Technological advancement does not always grow linearly.
Look at the situation today, the US is in a recession, so NASA's budget is much smaller than before.

Just like human history so far, Bungie's humanity's history from the present to the 2500s was probably filled with economic crises and wars as much as it was filled with technological advancement and diplomatic achievement.

What about slip space travel? That's incredibly advanced (and probably impossible in real life =[ ).

Plus, obtaining resources capable of supporting the construction of a interstellar fleet must have been staggering. Humanity would probably have to mine the rocky planets in our solar system before being able to leave it with as much ships as they did.

A giant jump in technology can be seen after the major insurrectionist movement (something involving Space Communists and Space Fascists) was crushed. The Spartan II project began because this was when Earth's colonies (and all their resources) were finally under a stable control of the UNSC.

I hope this helped clear a few things up for this thread. ;]

'life is a stare down with death himself'

true, the unsc did not declare martial law until the human-covenant war. most likely there was little money wise for weapons development.

Don't worry, you're still your mom's favorite Bnet member.

You see we're coming pretty close to the pinnacle of human advancement. I'm honestly not surprised about it. Besides, we spent 300 of those 500 years doing nothing but colonizing other planets.

Theoretically, slipspace is technically possible. Halo describes it as forming micro-black holes in front of the ship using a particle accelorator of sorts. We can create micro black holes today, such as in CERN. We might not be to far away from it tbh.

But black holes are bodies of hyper-densematter, not holes in space.

When something gets sucked in, it gets added to the mass, not transported elsewhere.

Centuries of war to use trial and error and make fire arms and vehicles more effective in combat, not the reverse.

All of the weapons are nerfed in gameplay. Canonically, the guns have a slightly longer range than today's, as well as packing more punch.

No enemy ? Damn sure that minor to moderate conflicts will develop always.
What about all that time before they started to colonize ? I mean there's no reason for the sudden downshift in weapon grade technology, some modern Smg's have a range of 300 meters, like the assault rifle in halo.....
Asault rifles that should usually have a range much greater than that, especially the ones with the bullpulp configuration.
And just because the UEG hadn't encountered much conflict, doesn't mean that they can simply halt the development in weaponary all together.

I think it's just another rehash of the Alcubierre Drive.

Yes, I know that, i have read all the novels so far, but there isn't much a justification in developing an assault rifle without iron sights. lolz
But the technology in general is caught up to speed at least.
