It probably had to do with the centuries of wars and a government controlled by the military don't give a very good environment for technological innovation.

Centuries of war to use trial and error and make fire arms and vehicles more effective in combat, not the reverse.
All of the weapons are nerfed in gameplay. Canonically, the guns have a slightly longer range than today's, as well as packing more punch.

Yes, I know that, i have read all the novels so far, but there isn't much a justification in developing an assault rifle without iron sights. lolz
But the technology in general is caught up to speed at least.
Don't they have a chip in the back of the head for that?

The halo universe was created based off a game.

Not much else to say.

  • 03.14.2011 3:47 PM PDT

lots of inventions are created due to war take the tank for example created in the 1910s during the first world war as something to help push past the trenches or the Gatling gun the first machine gun if anything war helps development but not in a good way

Think about this.

We are a unified culture after the rainforest/interplanetary wars. We have no enemies to fight. All of humanity is joined under the United Nations.

Why would we improve weaponry to fight an enemy that doesn't exist?

We focused on social expansion and colonization technologies, not military. The UNSC/CMA was more of a security force rather then a true military.

The UEG ran the show, really.

No enemy ? Damn sure that minor to moderate conflicts will develop always.
What about all that time before they started to colonize ? I mean there's no reason for the sudden downshift in weapon grade technology, some modern Smg's have a range of 300 meters, like the assault rifle in halo.....
Asault rifles that should usually have a range much greater than that, especially the ones with the bullpulp configuration.
And just because the UEG hadn't encountered much conflict, doesn't mean that they can simply halt the development in weaponary all together.

UEG: "Let's see, we can put funding into terra-forming, colonization, and fixing Earth while making our population able to sustain itself and have enough food. Or we can continue to research and develop new, more powerful weapons that we may never use and would simply be a drain of funds and resources right now."

you don't think, flash cloning, augmented supersoldiers, space travel, colonization of countless planets, slipspace travel, the development of AI's capable of runnning full ships and learning the entire history of mankind in minutes is enough?

Umm you seem to assume that there would be a huge drain in the resources, which it wouldn't, a civillization doesn't just stop improving weapons tech just fora matter of colonization.
And then somehow forget and make their weapons inferior to ours.Yet they had all the time to come up with the newer types of assault rifles and weapons, but yet they can't even make weapons on par with their modern counterparts.

Racism isn't wrong if it's funny.

Well everyone in the 80's thought we would be flying cars by now. So not really. I completely depends on the social and political situation of the world, and mind you, they were already in a civil war.

No, not exactly, that's what the helmets and visors are for, not every marine or trooper has a neural interface, Im sure I don't see one for Johnson, yet he's somehow able to aim the assault rifle without much trouble.

It certainly encourages innovation, but not as much as the kind of innovation that occurs during peacetime. Many resources are used to continue the war effort, and while defense funding does skyrocket, those resources (like manpower used in the military instead of getting a college degree and pursuing academic careers) are flat-lined. Innovation may be good in the beginning, but centuries of continuous conflicts will drain any nation's resources to the point of little innovation.

Just look at the outcomes of the Spartan and Athenian societies during their time. One, an oppressive country centered around military strength (UNSC), the other a democratic nation excelling at trade and treating its citizens equally.Source.

Either that or Bungie isn't looking that far ahead. ;)

I don't think the implant is as visible as Hoods.

Anyway, if I remember right a neural implant was standard issue for any marine. An enhanced version was given to Master Chief as part of testing the AI housing in the mark V.

There is cloning, the kids who became Spartans were flash-cloned, and the clones replaced the abducted children, but due to the nature of trying to flash clone an entire person as opposed to just an organ or something like that, most of the clones didn't live for long. Where did you get the idea that there was no cloning of any sort in Halo?

Don't worry, you're still your mom's favorite Bnet member.

I think those 300 years of doing nothing but colonizing the galaxy may have reduced our weapons sandbox a bit. We really don't know how powerful marine armor is 500 years from now, for all we know the Assault Rifle is more powerful than any automatic weapon in existence today.

I understand nothing because my life is a conspiracy.

Maybe there was another dark age?

Why is everyone taking figures that we have been given as fact. Bungie/writers clearly have little concept of how a weapon works and proper combat vehicle design.
However they make rocking games and books, and cool looking gear to go with it.

By my calculations and estimates, the Assault Rifle has nearly twice the KE of a modern 7.62mm NATO, while transferring the same, if not less recoil to the operator. It would easily have an effective range of 900-1500m. Not to mention it has a HUD-compatible holographic sight, and given the size of the magazine, an advanced feed system, propellant and significantly reduced case size are a must.

There is only so far that projectile weaponry can advance. Lack of micro power-plants, fuel sources, sutible materials and that pesky physics malarky can explain how technology has advanced.

Probably. But we didn't. Or...they didn't, at least. I don't know. Lol. I think they invented pretty much everything we have imagined, and more. And that's enough for me.

And why does Bungie/writers have no idea how weapons work?

Gameplay?

Exactly right! What we are given as canon doesn't fit with current technological achievement.

The kidnapped children were replaced by clones so that no one would think they ever even disappeared.

You know gameplay elements cannot be taken as canon(for the most part because of balancing) correct?

If so, then the fuel rod cannon wouldn't blast things apart and all the warthogs stationed on the Pillar of Autumn are immune to being destroyed. The plasma rifle wouldn't melt through metal and skin.

  • 03.15.2011 8:35 AM PDT

I put the laughter in manslaughter

our strategy of shooting crap really fast has been very effective at killing other humans for quite some time.
Plus there was no covenant and no really need for huge militaries before this whole embarrassing misunderstanding happened.

Really? Thanks for pointing that out, I'll remember that.

Lets use the books than instead.
Contact Harvast, Assault Rifle's range - 300m

Clearly the work of someone who knows F-all about weapons. The only way it would have an effective range of 300m is if the bullet was made out of jelly babies. Standard 7.62mm NATO has an 800m effective range if I remember correctly. (When fired form a comparable rifle)

Then again, from the people who think the BR can only shoot 200m this is not surprising.

My point is, when we apply this logic across the entire UNSCDF, we get a greatly underestimated picture of what the UNSC military is technologically capable of. Yes, I understand this is to aid storytelling, who wants a marine sitting a mile away from the action picking off bad guys before they can shoot back anyway?

but i according to halo legends, the flash clones are specifically meant to die in a short period of time by a natural cause like cancer. This freed the spartans to act freely throughout the galaxy without having the worry of them being looked for or tracked. FYI tom 117 elite, Catherine Halsey flash cloned her brain to make Cortana and her sister, whose name i do not remember.
