Yesterday I spent the evening, with Stalin the 31st, attempting to keep the ilovebees fetish under control... for the most part, we failed... I recieved many PM's about how much people hated me, and was considerably flamed on the threads I made or posted on. Personally I don't give a rats what happened, but thought I should do my best to keep the forum good and proper and prevent spamming of Bungie's site.

The aim was to reduce flaming and keep all discussion to 1 or 2 threads, by doing so it would be easy for people to access, and would keep tempers down. People don't seem to understand you are helping, and bite the hand that feeds until you have nothing but a bloodied stump of a wrist... So my story aside... how did all the other veteran B.net members go? Or wre you guys wise enough to avoid the New Mombasa and let the Mods deal with it?

-- Tristan is thankful to all those who read his words and understood, and less thankful to those who felt they needed to abuse him even after he left the forum to go to sleep.

That is what I pondered as well Gaara. The Septagon has been pretty much dead, I haven't seen any posts from the old guard in a while.

I do think however, Gaara, that we did an ok job... Look at NM now. Pretty much all ILB discussion is on one thread. Whether or not that was down to us is not the point, but still we did our bit.

I think a special mention must go out to Vella, who was also key in helping to keep the discussion under control.

--I am in no way a veteran B.net user...however,

You should have heard the whiners, and complainers. They were mad at Bungie because they didn't hand them out any new info.

I had to explain about thirty seven odd times that Ilovebees was more than just a glorified countdown to screenshots, it was a story, Bungie never said that it was related to Halo 2, and the rest of it. Some people just are not grateful when people try to do nice things for them.

The worst thing I saw posted was a link to this "Site" which slanders Bungie employees for not fulfilling the dreams of idiots who couldn't be bothered to actually get past the countdown and read and solve Ilovebees. The second worst thing was someone asked the Mods to Sticky it.

There were a lot of flame wars, and mostly one sided. There were numerous polls exclaiming how mad the idiots were at Bungie (Still refusing to admit they brought it upon themselves)

So, no, it was not a very fun day today. The best part was hearing all of the Axons on ILb, but coming back to the forums was a nightmare.

Ugh. Bee Day killed all of my faith in New Mombasa for a while. I stayed up all night waiting for the countdown to drop, so I will really lose it if this happens again tomorrow.

EDIT-Thanks for the mention ;-)

I do not consider myself a vet either.

I think the best way to describe what I was doing was moderating without the power or authority of a moderator. For a short period it seemed as if there were no moderators around, thread after thread was being made about the same topic. So I thought 'Hey, I'll lend a hand, do my best to guide them'.

Despite the occasional 'Your not a moderator' it was a relatively fulfiling experience for myself. I actually PM'ed a flamer, explaining why I was acting like a mod, and he apologised!
I didn't expect that.

I found myself instructing users to post on the threads already up, I ignored the flamers and generally just helping people out. It was a good experience, and I like to think I did my bit to help, no matter how small and insignificant my actions were.

Officium quod Fidelitas.

If people say "you're not a moderator" let me know, I'll come down and rawk their world. It's true the New Mombasa is a little crazy, everyone feels the need to post a thread when something comes out. It's like they can't look 5 posts down and see an exact thread right there, should Bungie start paying for glasses?

Ach! Was ist los?

I stayed out of New Mombasa entirely. It was impossible to even THINK with all those people complaining.

You know what Bungie should have done? Sent in the Webmaster!

I still think that Soul would have been better to send in... after all, there's only so much that the Webmaster (or any mortal) can endure.

I too stayed away from New Mombasa for much of the day; alas, spillover affected the other forums here and on the other sites I was trying to follow (HBO and Unfiction). However neither were quite as bad as I'd feared, though Unfiction was off-line for much of the morning due to traffic saturation... despite that they've done stellar work. Kudos to them!

Perhaps when traffic eases I'll start to post there. Hopefully I'll be able to cut a better figure there than I have recently... it's gotten to me too much. Too spoiled by the response to my little project, I guess. The stellar performance there probably elevated my expectations for the newer members a tad too high. Maybe leave it a week, to let things (and me) cool down, and I'll return.

I thought about helping control the forums but i didn't think it would work that well.

I did not stay away from the forums yesterday, and tried to be something that I was not. I... I just got pretty damn frustrated with how things were going and tried to stop it- and all I got was a derogatory remark from Shishka. My advice for all of you is to let the mods handle this ILB stuff, they have the power to stop it, we do not. It's their choice when to decide when this entire ILB stuff is really over.

-EDIT- fixed a typo

I didn't even touch that subject again. They're/were just too many who are/were mis-guided. I felt that if I couldn't enforce the way I felt, then why say anything? In that case I just strayed away.

I tried to make my few posts in there helpful, but I mostly stayed away from there. When there's a flood of activity, I prefer to stay out of the way and let things calmed down.

And also, as I predicted, someone made a thread about how no demo appeared on the 24th. Sometimes it is very easy to predict what will pop up in NM.

Ugh...that 'site' made me want to vomit. Or hit myself in the head with a blunt object.

You know, I'm glad Bungie has more name recognition these days, but people like that, who actually devote a portion of their lives to 'write' [?deficate?] something like that make me reconsider if is such a good thing after all...

... So my story aside... how did all the other veteran B.net members go? Or wre you guys wise enough to avoid the New Mombasa and let the Mods deal with it?

I wouldn't presume to consider myself a "vet", but hopefully age has given me a small measure of wisdom (if it hasn't, I don't know what else could possibly balance out the loss of my hair).

I myself just sat back, read, absorbed, clicked on links and pondered. I take the approach of, "Better to remain silent and have the world think that you are a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt." Perhaps that is not true wisdom, but online, it can be hard to tell it from the real thing.

Of course, the downside of silence is that no one knows that you are there, quietly pondering and refusing to add fuel to the fire. It is (in my mind) one of the drawbacks of nearly every forum on the 'Net. Silence is typically equated with absence, ignorance, non-contribution and/or indifference. A pity, since silence can be a very powerful statement.

It's been said that the best thing (in some cases) that we can do for the community is to not respond to "spam", "feed the trolls", or flame. It is a shame that by making the decision to not type a response and remain silent, a person's good deed for the community is (by the nature of silence) unnoticed and unrecognized.

*shrug* Oh well. I still consider lurking to be an underappreciated art-form.

I agree my friend, being silent in this situation is the best solution. You will not stop it nor help it by replying, no matter what you say, unless you wanted to reply on the subject itself.

"It is not to ask why?But to do and die!"

As for that "site" i am shocked, oke i was dissapointed to, but mainly because i am unable to get my hands on the OXM!However insulting Bungie at every single way...

Ugh...that 'site' made me want to vomit. Or hit myself in the head with a blunt object.

Heh... my blood pressure started to rise after reading that as well, until I caught his email address: unrealplayer##@#######.### (munged for reasons I hope I don't have to explain.)

Somehow I doubt this is an impartial article. Perhaps I'm being too critical or too suspicious, but Mr. Unrealplayer kinda sacrificed my good will by calling me a tool and uttering insults to Frankie because Bungie didn't meet their Unrealistic demands.

Jason is right. The only people promising new toys for yesterday were the ones expecting it... Bungie didn't say anything, neither did Microsoft, nor did the Mysterious Puppet Masters. A promise can't be broken if it wasn't made in the first place. Nobody sheared them but themselves.

It's skidmarks like Mr. Unrealplayer that make flaming seem so satisfying; and yet it isn't, is it? It just ratchets up the tensions, so another cycle of flames begins and 'round and 'round we go. Until we end up with New Mombasa on a bad day all over again.

I'm thinking that the only proper response is to let them stew in their own juices.

You, really, really don't want to let people contact you.
