Use Xfire to try and find each other. Xfire allows you to IM each other while in-game...very useful when trying to play on the same game. Also, Xfire allows you to directly connect to the game that your friend might be playing, useful for when you want to play with a friend.

If you and your friend both have DIFFERENT copies of halo, then there shouldn't be any problem. If you have the same copy, I dont think there should be an incompatibility issue. Perhaps you two don't have the updated version of halo? As in, you for example have the Halo version 1.7, while your friend still has 1.6?

I would make teh post longer, but I'm too lazy to. I'll edit it later, perhaps.

Well try what me15ter suggested. And if that does not work, have one of you go into a game, and then call the buddy, and read off the direct ip which you can get by holding down 1 or F1, I forget which one as I have not played in a while, but look in the lower right corner, and over the phone read it off exactly the way it is to your friend, have him type in under direct ip. I do it often when my bro is playing halo downstairs and me upstairs.

Yeah, the lobby can be pretty finicky and often works in funky ways. I've tried this with my friend who lives in the same neighborhood, but we couldn't get our own game going because neither of our servers would show up to the other. If you haven't tried both going into a game that neither of you created, that might be the next step. Call each other and talk about what the name of the server you are joining is so you can both jump in. Or, if either of you have a laptop that can run Halo, bring the game and laptop to the other person's house and play through a lan.

Aside from the name of the server, if you or your friend can copy the IP address of the server you are in & you can use the direct IP link to join the same game. Make sure (when required) to include the port when relaying he server you are currently in.

O.o Wow. A legitimate use for Direct IP jumping.

If you are both on a LAN trying to play on the NET you will have to adjust the ports in the games on both computers and forwerd the apropreate ports in the router.

Make sure your firewalls are turned off. I have Zone Alarm and whenever I host a server on Halo it won't let me host unless its off.
