In memory of those fallen in the defense of Earth and her colonies.

March 3, 2553

I would like to go back to old school style. I know this can't be done because there has to be some sort of gimmicks to make the game sell.

A exciting campaign with beautiful scenery, a nice back story and a great multiplayer would be perfect.

I reckon the next game should be Halo: Return of the Forerunner
After the war, 10 years to be exact, everyone has settled down nicely. A covenant ship is found coming out of slipspace, so the humans prepare their defences in case the ship is hostile. However just before the order to give fire, the master chief radios in "This is Spartan-117, do not attack, repeat do not attack." A lieutenant general replies back "Master Chief? Where is Cortana?" Chief replies "She is currently in the hands of her makers, who are also on this ship" The Lieutenant replies "What? The Forerunner?". Once the ship lands, the forerunner meet the humans and they litterally look exactly the same, exception of clothing. 10 mins later, a covenant armada, consisting of all the Holy cities makes a final attack on earth. The covenant foolishly mistake the forerunner for "human" vermin and attack them as well. As the forerunner detonate a slipspace explosion, as seen in halo reach, they inadvertantly create a new organism. At first, the humans and forerunner alike study this new organism, but soon it turns disasterous and it attacks everyone in the room. The parasitic growth then, after learning its abilities, transforms up into a grey table. The forerunner who survived called it a "shape shifter", meaning its able to turn into anything it wants. Before it attacked, the forerunner were able to determine that the shape shifter was liable to the effect of the halo ring. Having known this, they head out to the nearest installation, being 04. However, when they arrive and the forerunner find their ring destroyed, they curse humanity for possibly dooming the existence of the entire multi-verse. Realising that bickering was pointless, chief recommends heading toward the ark, being only a mere 145.58 lightyears away (for a slipspace that is). The ark had fully repaired itself and the new installation 04 was currently waiting idle for the correct permissions for it to be moved to its new location. Once the forerunner land at the arks control room, they order everyone human but the chief to head straight back to earth on one of the forerunner ships, collect everyone from earth and travel via slipspace to the leo madra galaxy on the other side of the universe. Once they exit the jump, disaster strikes. Shape Shifters had assumed the shape of the forerunner ships, therefore rendering it highly risky to actually activate the rings. The chief turns to the forerunner command officer "The universe has been nice to me. Time to return the favour. Activate the rings. There are at least 3/4 of forerunner still with my race. Do it, its time to return the favour." After the chief resigns to his fate, he notices only 1 forerunner ship acting out of fashion. Example, its exterior was glossier than anything else. 'Time to make my final kill' he thought to himself. He calmly waltzed in front of the fake ship and said aloud in an evil tone, a tone that meant he doesn't care if he died, just that so long as he knew he did his part for humanity "Come out you disgusting parasite. Show me who's better? Me? Or just something that can transform into anything it wants?!"
The chief should have watched his mouth. As soon as those words left his mouth, his mind felt like it was being stabbed with a dagger. 'They can read our thoughts and minds' he thought. He immediately saw a picture of 343 GS in his mind. He heard a mocking laugh which then said aloud "ahh, the perfect weapon".
Instantly, the ship dissapeared and thousands of small, floating heads appeared. Chief, armed with forerunner weapons, which consist of a Forerunner Reaper, shoots the 343 GS beam far more concentrated, and a Forerunner modified Spartan Laser, which shoots the same beam, but this time it runs on oxygen, therefore rendering infinite ammo. You would now enter a firefight mode where you have infinite waves of 343 GS attacking you until you as the chief eventually die. When you die, the forerunner activate the rings. Every single being in the Orion arm wiped out in a matter of minutes. The humans return to earth. A newly assembled spartan team had journeyed to the ark to reclaim the masterchiefs helmet. After the Eulogy, the game slowly ends by fading towards the masterchiefs destroyed helmet, which is just a shard from the back of his helment saying "UNSC Spartan-117"

We all like the Halo gameplay, but Bungie's problem was that they tried too much to make Halo gameplay, rather than make good and interesting gameplay. Play Halo CE, play Halo 2 and then play 3, ODST and Reach. Look how the Halo gameplay got standardized, formulated over time, particularly since 3 where they seemed to have found "the way" to make Halo games. Halo 3's game design could've been better, but it was still a bit different than Halo CE's and 2's, but it's with ODST and Reach where they tried nothing to stand out of the now very defined norm.

then they should make the story of the next game happen before the fall of reach, if thats what you want. lol

  • 03.21.2011 8:34 AM PDT

yea well that means you would literally have to witness the start of the human-covenant war.

i'd like to see some sequel to H3 but after that i'd like to see a game based off spartan deployments during the insurrection/early covenant war as i understand it in the early part of the covy war we were winning some this could help the fact that in most previous games you feel like your ultimatly losing like reach and odst

I'd definitely want to see some action with insurrectionists or before the whole Halo thing, Harvest could be pretty cool. As the real Halo Reach. 343 can make Halo: The Fall of Reach, right?

i want the next campaign to have charecters that we get to know, gameplay wise i think they should use the books as examples, instead of a run and gun have a whole bunch of different missions, the spartans were trained when facing a stronger opponent to use gorrila style techniques,i don't think i have ever seen them do that in a game once

ohh and NO ARMOUR ABILITIES

Using the books as examples is a good idea. Most situations in the books were more interesting than what we were offered recently. We should have other objectives than killing/destroying something. We should have more dynamic objectives, missions should change sometimes, objectives being aborted, modified or added on the go. Defend-type objectives shouldn't feel like a firefight game, but like a real war-like attack; you should feel some oppression, falling back, etc. Firefight games feel too much like "some troops are getting inserted near your base, get rid of them as you please", so often you use the whole map, running around and fighting in a way that is not reminiscent of a real invasion.

ohh and NO ARMOUR ABILITIES

Indeed! Though I wouldn't be against jetpacks in campaign. I mean, jetpacks are jetpacks, the spartans should be able to use whatever equipment. Getting a jetpack should mean you can't carry some particular pieces of equipment or weaponry as an example.

In many ways, I view Bungie and Halo as two separate entities. So, Bungie had their own methods as to designing the various Missions and Levels for their Halo games, all of which changed greatly over the course of the series. However, Halo is not restricted to these particular methods, and could developed with a variety of different ones, not just the those we saw in Halo 3: ODST, Halo: Reach and the John-117 Trilogy. There are many more nooks and crannies that have yet to be explored, with regard to Character and Story development as well as Campaign design - 343 Industries can potentially use these when developing Halo 4, in order to deliver a spectacular, yet very different cinematic experience.

I expect 343 Industries' Halo games to be very different than that of which were developed by Bungie.

OP you said you want the system to stay "shield and health" etc yet at the same time you want the Halo gameplay to change, what do you mean and what would you suggest they do without it not being Halo anymore?

I think you only need the game to take place in the Halo universe to be a Halo game. I mean, wouldn't you consider Halo Wars not an Halo game? And let me use a ridiculous example, say Halo 4 is a Splinter Cell rip-off, nothing disables 343 to give your character health and shields instead of solely health. What I really mean is, the gameplay could be more tactical, à la Ghost Recon, say. Enemies would need to be stronger, but so do you. Movement would have to be different, enemies would have to use tactics, ie. not run alone after you, things about the AI should be changed.

But really, I don't really have a specific suggestion. Well, actually I like the Ghost Recon thing. Well, I'd be very happy just to see more tactical gameplay, something that plays very different to the Halo games while you still feel like a spartan, but you wouldn't be able to do every tactic you usually do. But back to the Ghost Recon thing, obviously it wouldn't be a rip-off, but inspiration from it would definitely be cool, and it's not like that type of gameplay saturates the industry nowadays. Hell, I'm sure there's ways to make that sort of gameplay very fresh and feel very different to Ghost Recon.

What I'd like to see, well first, we all know Spartans are not invincible and that the Legendary difficulty is probably the most realistic one. Though obviously harder to play. What I love in shooters and I think is missing in pretty much every game nowadays, is feeling the danger. You should take risks, like running across a street with enemies nearby. Being a Spartan, it would be unlikely for you do die from shots, but your shields could be depleted significantly. Scouting areas for intel and choosing a way to approach the situation would give you an advantage, using vehicles would be practical as ever too, as sniping down enemies or using power weapons. Enemies would have to be weaker though, but would ultimately feel much more dangerous. Anyway, these are just quick thoughts on the subject, not really suggestions. But thing is, I'm sure there's plenty of ways to freshen up the Halo gameplay as well as shooters in general which have been particularly stale and boring nowadays with countless identical CoD games and clones.

that is an excellent point you have there. but what i was actually thinking along the lines of is sort of similar to how 6 died. i know its sort of a remake but think of this. Outside the ark control room with 5 forerunner ships docked above it. Noticing a glossier exterior on one, the chief shoots, then all hell breaks loose, chief dies, forerunner activate, etc etc, game over, win win win

Never say you're bored. Never say you're satisfied with the world. Never stop doubting or questioning things. Always wonder. Always think. But always take time to drop your guard, you don't have to be smart all the time.
