*rolls eyes* I hate these threads.
Stosh, that was very well put. Reiginko, nice to see you.
As aforementioned by many others, the Forum Ninjas job is completely voluntary. No pay, whatsoever. They get a few minor perks, such as the white text and custom avatar, but that's it. Completely free. Do you understand service? This is what the moderators do. Service. They spend hours daily keeping an eye on bnet to keep the peace.
Why do mods lock posts? Many reasons. Often, the thread will start as or drift off-topic. Sometimes a flamewar arises. Sometimes threads are just plain spam. Many, many reasons, all legitimate.
There are around 15 moderators here on B.net. They monitor 12 forums. Not an easy task. When you take a forum such as the Flood and give it rules, it requires a ton of volunteer moderating work. Almost everyday I go back about 5 pages in the Flood to see if I've missed anything interesting. I see locked topics galore. Yet I still find threads that should be locked, that are missed, or take a long time to be noticed by moderators. There are 1,000,000+ members of Bungie.net. Compared to these 15 moderators. Sounds an awful lot like 15 logs trying to do the job of Hoover Dam. And look how clean the forums are. The dam rarely bursts, and when it does, it takes no time at all for it to be patched.
What about unfair blacklistings? Well, I've seen and done many things on bnet. And I've seen very few unfair blacklistings. One not even by a moderator(Frankie gave me a 2-day). They are very lenient actually. May idiots intentionally break the common 3-strike rule before getting banned. Yet some people do things that go unpunished. Just a locked thread and a warning(hence the 3-strike rule). Sometimes, even I have been surprised by the leniency, generosity, and general good faith in the community by our Forum Ninjas. Sure, sometimes they're drunk. But they are never irresponsible.
Also, the moderators can't do their job alone. They rely greatly on the community. I'm not going to go too deep into this at the moment, but you can always read this for more info:
