Had the BR been integrated with Combat Evolved do you think the series would have been such a success?
I don't simply because it would make for a less diverse experience in terms of guns; people simply would stick with the BR as it is an all around great weapon.
I don't think it would have been as big of a breakout franchise if that were the case. IMO, Halo 2's weapon sandbox was perfectly timed for the first acclaimed XBL shooter. The BR flattened the skill curve drastically by introducing a utility weapon that even the CE pistol not capable of being. Point in fact I knew quite a few people that didn't like CE due to it's being difficult to acclimate, and LOVED Halo 2.
Look at many of the current complaints from those who are of the Halo 2/3 generation. Many of them center around there being no BR or a similar weapon. That weapon defined how the game was played, fed by XBL users who were concerned more with excelling in MP than actual gameplay balance.
CE stands alone in this regard, as it had to be a great game to thrive. It couldn't depend on the XBL shooter fans to eat it up the way Halo 2/3 did. Don't get me wrong, Halo 2/3 are solid titles that I enjoy, but you can tell the departure from focusing on core gameplay in the sequals, as XBL MP replayability became a greater concern.
Sorry for the rant.
