They would have been better in the games as a more savage opponent like they were in halo 2, but more well done than they were with their horrid AI and movement.

I hated then in Reach and Halo 3.

The worst covenant species. I HATE reading about them.

You must have LOVED Stepping on the Heels of a Fuss then.

Worst story in evolutions, next to Palace Hotel.

Even worse than Palace Hotel? I dont know about that one...

Palace Hotel, was horrible and the numbering and spelling of each vehicle and weapon was annoying as hell, EL EL AH VE, why the -blam!- cant he just say Warthog? The only part that redemed it a little was Parisa.

Yeah, same here XD When I started the thread I thought they were sort of cool, after reading "Stomping on the Heels of a Fuss" though...I have no respect for them anymore. Now I hate the species as a whole, though I still kinda like Maccabeus, he reminded me of a the Elites a bit.

Brutes were perfect in Halo 2. They needed no change.

Oh well.

I think Halo 2 is definitely where they looked the best, but honestly? Two sword blows and practically all the ammo in one gun to kill them? No thanks, that's broken gameplay imo, the only surefire way to kill them was assassinations or Stickies, and Stickies don't always kill them with one grenade. The amount of damage it took to down a Brute in Halo 2 almost made the game unplayable to me.

If you had a Battle Rifle/Carbine/Sniper, there was nothing to worry about, but other wise, I liked it like that. Brutes made you play smart, especially on Legendary with their damn Brute Shots.

They were annoying as hell, in Halo 2, they kill me with ease no matter what weapon I have, and no, I don't charge headlong into the fight. The Brutes were pretty broken in Halo 2 and that's the truth.

I wont argue with you there, but atleast they were much much better than their Halo3/ODST/Reach counter parts.

I could never take them seriously after Halo 3.

I have intentionally stayed away from this thread for one very important reason. This thread was created by, and is posted in (for the most part), by people who dislike the Brutes.

It's like asking about your stance on abortion on a conservative-Christian web forum. Kinda self-defeating.

I have noticed three major ideas:

1. Reach brutes suck
2. People hate Brutes because...no reason given.
3. The books did a horrible job portraying the Brutes

text to quote

1. I will never argue that the Reach brutes suck. I think someone said they look like male strippers. Although that is not a pretty sight to behold, it is an accurate one. The aesthetics totally failed, along with the rest of that game. Halo Reach should be buried right next to ET in the Mexico desert.

2. People continually call them stupid. When in reality, given what they have accomplished, the most you can say is that they are adversarial and they just lack artistic flare.

Dirty, stinky ass mofos. I think one would eat me if I gave it an algebra equation.

I am pretty sure you need a full understanding of Physics, algebra, calculus to even begin to understand aerodynamics and the principles behind piloting an air vehicle, not to mention, space flight (which the Brutes did achieve by themselves)

Not to mention, they engineer their own vehicles and weapons, which also takes an understanding of mathematics...so clearly you did not think about this when you post. You are stupid.

Additionally, I would assume the Brutes managed to split the atom as they did have nuclear weapons. Do you have ANY idea how much knowledge it takes in the fields of particle physics and mathematics to even do this?

Brutes are not dumb, they just lack artistic flare. They are not slow, they are just aggressive and have very domineering personalities. This is what makes them unique.

See what I mean when I say people read these schlock books and they make judgments without actually evaluating.

Sure...some people here CLAIM they know how to evaluate facts. If this is true, why were these points never raised? I know why they were never raised...because everyone here reads those STUPID schlock books and they are drowned in the stupidity that are the Halo novels.

HAAATE them in every way you can hate something. Gameplay dynamics, looks, behavior, story fit, I just hate them in every way.

Nobody even questioned this. Why do you hate them? That wasn't even asked ONCE. But if I said I HAAAATE Elites in every way, gameplay wise and dynamics...you people would be jumping down my throat.

See what I mean? This thread was created by people who just have an unadulterated and unfounded hate for Brutes. Why even make this thread if it's just to rag on them?

20 bucks says if I make a thread to rag on Elites...EVERYONE will come to their defense. But not a SINGLE person here even challenges a single unfounded claim made in this thread.

This is why I believe this entire community is utterly, without question, the largest congregation of stupidity on the internet.

I completely hate everything about them.

But for aesthetic and gameplay reasons, I'd prefer the Halo 2 Brutes, but with Halo 3 Weapons. They shouldn't have much armor, they are bullet sponges. They shouldn't just throw their hands in the air when they get shot, they should beserk. They are brutes. And use the Halo 3 weapons. Because for god's sake who decided it made any sense to give Brutes UNSC shotguns?

How can you hate EVERYTHING about them just because of the guns they use, and the way they berserk?

I hate EVERYTHING about Elites because they say Wort and they have legs that look funny. If I was serious in this claim, I would be ripped apart.

But...clearly...nobody brings this up. And again, unfounded and ridiculous claims slide because this thread has no meaning.

They are terrible to read about because the books suck and the writers just want to make you hate them because they "look mean". You have half-assed writers taking shortcuts, taking cheap shots and just making an easily dislike-able race more dislike-able with contrived and lazy plot devices. Any jerk-off can write a mean bad guy. However it takes genius level thinking to make bad guys and antagonists that are well structured. Give them motive, depth, and an actual personality and state of mind. Show some sort of personal struggle, some growth, personal goals, personal insight into how things are around them, and reasoning behind everything. This was never done. But...everyone here has such limited and narrow vision of what constitutes a good story...I am not surprised nobody ever points THESE things out.

I would have more respect for these writers if they tried to make all of the characters like-able...not just picking and choosing what would sell the most money. Part of good story writing is making the reader like the characters, even if they are bad. This is called character development. I learned this in grade 2 Language Arts.

There is a difference between disliking a bad guy because he/she is well written, and disliking a bad guy because he/she is flat out terribly written as characters. Everyone here dislikes the Brutes because they are flat out...terribly written.

That's not called broken game play...that's called you suck at the game.

Broken gameplay is when the mechanics are flawed. Example...Brutes having power armor that breaks like glass when the shields go down? Thats broken as it made them too easy to beat. Why didn't the grunts, jackals, or Elites have armor that broke apart.

What would you say if Elites in Reach had armor that exploded into a thousand pieces like Brute armor did in halo 3/ODST? Would you hate this, or would you like this?

Actually...that question goes out to EVERYONE!

What would you say if Elites in Reach had armor that exploded into a thousand pieces like Brute armor did in halo 3/ODST? Would you hate this, or would you like this?

Funny...dishonorable applies to those who TURN THEIR BACKS on their beliefs.

Elites did that...

I will end off with this...this argument is VERY one sided, as you have people who hate on Brutes, ragging on them, and nobody questions it.

Sorry...but this thread, is little more than an Elite Brothel, geared towards to the total service of Elites. Once you guys get those members out of your mouths, and wipe the Elite DNA from your chins and mouth regions...let me know. Let me know when you guys are done with the one-sided nonsense.

How do Elites not look stupid? They have disgusting faces with teeth coming from every direction and 4 lips.

Elites are more ugly than Brutes!

Brutes lack artistic flare, this does not make them stupid and this means jack--blam!- when saying they act stupid. They are just more direct.

They can be as intelligent as any other creature in the Halo Universe (excluding forerunners/precursors of course) but they cannot show this given their aggressive nature, which more often than not haves them fighting each other into de-volution.

I blame this on the terrible book writers.

You don't see Brutes killing each other in the game...only in the terribly written books do you see that.

Again, I raise the points as to why the books sucks - the writers do not know how to write interesting and developed characters.

Yeah, well I don't think killing members from their own tribes would be a good idea (except they wanted the Chieftain position). But then again, yes they do have a bad reputation both in the games and in the books.

I think they would have made better for better enemies if they had given them more intelligence that they actually do.

I could live with them trying to kill the Chieftain to gain power. If anything, it has a subtle message that the strongest and most cunning Brute should be the leader. If a newcomer can kill the current chieftain, the newcomer is stronger. This works and has it;s own logic to it.

I didn't mind how they were portrayed in the games. They had cohesion and unity in the games. It is the books that bug me.

I would rather have Marty O'Donnell write a profile for the brutes...at least he has seen one. I doubt those Book writers have.

Brutes from Halo2 to Halo:Reach have always lacked what they are actually supposed to be in the Halo Universe. What I don;t understand is why Bungie can't seem to make them a consistent enemy like the Elites.

For me it goes like this for Brutes

Halo2>Reach>ODST>Halo3

Halo 3 Brutes we're just okay. Mostly weak and unchallenging. ODST made them slightly better now that the Brutes strafed and took cover more than their Halo 3 versions; Brutes also had that defense stance in ODST that made them a tad bit challenging to fight against; A.I. seemed to have gained a bit of a boost too in ODST. Reach brutes are just hideous and don't make sense visually/canonically. However, they are more challenging since it takes more shots to drop them. They spam stick grenades like -blam!-es though. Still, they work efficiently as a pack and are quite challenging to fight against.

Halo 2 brutes were the best. It was simple but still flawed. They were bullet sponges, yes, and they hardly even flanked the player. However, their berserking and brute strength made them very challenging. Visually you couldn't tell what the hell they were suppose to look like since the detail and texturing on their face was so utterly bad. What the Brutes needed after Halo 2 was an updated look (similar looks to the Halo 2 Brutes of course but without the crappy graphics) and some intelligence so they would actually move and try to flank the player. Berserking was perfect in Halo 2. Got thrown out in other games. What we got in Halo 3 were just a bunch of dumbed down Elites.
