France says they are hesitant to give the rebels weapons directly as they fear Gaddafi may capture some and use them against the civilian population.

No one should give the rebels weapons, it's just a bad idea. I have a feeling any weapons given to them could/will end up in the Talibans hands.
why the Taliban? you realize that the Taliban is only in the middle east and is a separate organization from al-Qeada? al-Qeada is all over, the Taliban is the displaced Government organization that ran Afghanistan prior to 2001. al-Qeada, while holding close ties to the Taliban is not the Taliban

also the Rebels are Pro-Democracy. The Taliban are very Anti-Democracy. they are polar opposites.

Sorry Al Qaeda is what i meant.

In all reality, even that seems unlikely, at least the Free Libyan army wouldn't be supplying AlQaeda, again as their ideals are different. The Free Libyan Army asked the west for help, AlQaeda is so anti west it has likely set the Free Libyan Army as a target now as they see them as allied with the western powers

A highly confidential document that belongs to the head of the Syrian general intelligence agency leaked out to the Internet. It had a thorough discussion of the Syrian authorities' strategies for dealing with the protests. Following is a translated excerpt from it: "In the case of violent confrontations between army units and protesters, it is required to issue a clear order to cease all fire from the side of the army, with the order not being applicable to trained Security Forces, and 'Secret' and 'Black' units, and to use snipers within these units in a non-apparent way to prevent the localization of the source of the fire. For more camouflage: There is no problem in killing some soldiers and officers of the army, as this is useful in increasing the animosity of the army towards the protesters."

Yes I'm fairly young. No, that doesn't mean I'm automatically dumber than you or have less life experience, thats just generally the case. I am not your general case.

wow, do you have a link?

it sounds like the way a despotic government would look at the situation, stops protests without it looking like the government is calling the shots, it also makes the protesters look violent.

NATO is in talks about further military action, specifically ground intervention by White helmets.

i would assume most of them would be from Pakistan/Jordan, because i recall White Helmets being classified under UN Peacekeepers

nope White helmets refer to NATO specific troops, as in Troops from countries on loan to NATO that operate outside of their home country's chain of command.

the Blue Helmets are UN Peace Keepers.

White Helmets are often referred to jokingly as Peace MAKERS

In an attempt to close the Port in Misurata and stop rebel supply lines, fired 200 rockets at the port and have effectively shut it down

and with that Misrata will fall

would be a REALLY good time to use those 2600-3000 United States Marines off the coast right about now

looks like they are going to supply strike craft to NATO again. While there will be no US command there will be more strike craft from the US under NATO command.

NATO says they will put troops on the ground when the UN criminal court finishes it's investigation on Gaddafi's war crimes. IF found Guilty NATO will put ground forces into Libya.

well, i think there is a high possibility of that. where is the USS Enterprise at, last i checked it should be in the Mediterranean.

well, i would prefer in the form of a Large Scale Amphibious Operation, may as well get the quota for the century out of the way now

  • 04.14.2011 5:38 PM PDT

I don't know if I like the idea of Americans dieing in Libya. But when Gadaffi is found guilty (it's not a matter of if) it would make the soldiers proud to positively affect the lives of people who need their help. At least, I hope it would make them proud.

the problem is that the case will take some time, most likely time the Libyans don't have

The only place in Libya that is really on a time constraint is Misurata. If the siege there is lifted then we can protect other cities with airstrikes. I would think.

and Misrata's supply line just got cut, they most likely only have a week before the city falls

Canada becomes the First Coalition country to formally declare war on Libya. While vowing to keep more boots off the ground pending the war crimes investigation, they have sent another 12 CF-18s and re purposed all of their craft to be used ONLY for strike missions.

a personal addendum: This to me is a political move on Harper's part. We are in the middle of an Election Campaign here, and if our country is at war the people know his party(the conservatives) are the backbone of military support.

Well that's no good. Why exactly haven't the rebels been able to break the stalemate?

Y'know I was talking to a friend today about hypothetically moving to Canada. This display isn't hurting that opinion. However, is there any chance this is only happening because it's an election season?
