The Canadian Government has not acknowledged the Rebel Government as legitimate, saying the Canadian policy is to recognize sovereign people. While they politically side with the rebels and label them a 'valid interlocutor' they still recognize Libya as a single Sovereign nation.

To clarify this, Canada for example recognizes the US as a sovereign nation, but does not recognize the legitimacy of their government without the support of their people. As the American people support their government, it legitimizes the government.

Possibly the fist stage before an attack?

Without derailing this thread too much, is the Taliban really a threat to us outside harboring terrorist organizations? I mean, aren't they just ultra-conservative Afghan Nationalists? If we eliminate terrorist training camps in the country I can't see how Afghanistan poses much risk to us.

They have links to several insurgent groups in and around Afghanistan, so it would be best to dismantle them as much as possible.

I also just want the people of Afghanistan to live in a democratic country rather than the theocratic state that the Taliban created in 1996.

Misrata still is in a bad way though.
the incident that video is talking about is sparking talks about using military ships to deliver aid. The Captain was panicking under fire from loyalist ships and it went awry. Using military ships will keep things more orderly and organized.

does anyone have the ships to spare?

and i'm sure the United States wont commit to such an operation.

but it needs to be done. besides, didn't the Loyalist surround Misrata again?

The loyalists try to push into the city every night and are sitting about 20 km away on 2 sides of the city.

Canada has offered the use of 3 of our ships if the UN clears it.

About a dozen loyalist mortar rounds have landed in the Tunisian boarder town of Dehiba, coming very close to destroying their drinking supply. the UN threatens aggressive ground action if such occurrences continue.

probably will.

Russia and China should understand such attacks can lead to far worst escalation then a UN ground intervention, especially with the new Tunisian and Egyptian governments.

If the loyalist do cross the Tunisian border and NATO gets the go ahead to put boots on the ground, I could see this conflict escalating quickly. I have no doubt Gaddafi will lose though.

Tunisian police have used tear gas and batons to break up protests demanding the resignation of the government in the most violent confrontation for weeks with pro-democracy demonstrators.

A demonstration in central Tunis by about 200 people on Friday called for the resignation of the transitional government and "a new revolution".

The demonstrators, yelling slogans such as "Get out!" and "The government still works for [ousted president Zine El Abidine] Ben Ali", faced off for 20 minutes against a police cordon on the central Habib Bourguiba Avenue.

The police then charged, firing tear gas canisters and causing panic among demonstrators, mainly youths, and pedestrians who were in the neighbourhood and tried to flee for shelter.

Thanks to Al Jazeera

Anyone else think we should just annex the countries we help? Countries like Libya and Tunisia are clearly incapable of creating a stable country with no corruption. This isnt the first time we have helped rebels take over a country, only for them to turn on us or for reports of atrocities committed by the government to come in?

The cycle goes
Dictator fights rebels
Rebels beat dictator or Dictator beats rebels
Rebels win-New government created but turns into a dictatorship and starts to mistreat its civilians.New Rebels are created.
Same thing again

also, it seems that the western Rebels are running better operations then the Eastern Rebels.

which is good, because the Western Rebels are cut off from the main body.

it is also a report of a NATO strike between Ajdabiya and Brega. A strike was also reported in Jalu this morning where clashes have been ongoing. People have stated that Al Kufra is under full opposition control and that the town of Abu Rawayah (west of Misrata) is also under opposition control and Gaddafi forces have surrendered there.

Awww come on UN. Threatening them isn't going to stop Gadaffi.

Hey, I have a question. In the first gulf war the UN went all out and won in a matter of weeks. Not that I'm certain we should, but why aren't we doing this?.

This certainly didn't happen in the English civil war, and you could consider the Parliamentarians to be rebels. It also hasn't happened in Ejypt.

The rebels sem to have good intentions. Their forces are widely civilian, so i expect they will get what they want if given the chance.

Exactly. A strong, US led Blitzkrieg could completely secure Mizurata in the hands of the Rebels. The Loyalist cant repel firepower of that magnitude. The Brits could cover us with Naval Artillery and NATO Planes would cover the sky as US, British, and tanks from other countries ripped through Libya.

Because nobody, including the Libyan civilians (at the moment at least) want to see a THIRD western invasion of a Muslim country. However at this point we might as well. I mean, this is a complete stalemate. I've seen no news for days. Even Al Jazeera isn't keepin a daily blog anymore. The only info i find is here.

I think he meant modern day revolutions in third world countries. also, Egypt didn't have a civil war. Egypt's military is very independent of the government and has a lot of business investments. Right now they care about a stable economy than political power.

You missed the point completely.

We said no boots are going on the ground to begin with but if they keep attack Tunisia and we warn them that they don't stop we will intervene with ground troops into Libya then the international community cannot say we did without warning and is against the UN mandate. And if anything they will be wearing the UN blue helmets or NATO white helmets so people will see its not an occupation force.

Exactly. Intervening in a domestic crisis in a country is one thing, attacking another country is another.

If the US cracked down on protests no one would try to intervene, if we started bombing Canada they would.

Sorry I'm confused who you mean is Intervening and attacking another country. NATO or the loyalists. It's just that NATO is intervening and the Loyalists are attacking the Tunisian border. Plz explain?
